Osemele's starting job was in question before the injury

Jets G Kelechi Osemele will have surgery to repair his injured shoulder, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed.

Osemele missed Week 5 and Week 6 due to the shoulder and a knee injury.

While this will hurt the Jets' depth, the team was considering the potential of replacing Osemele with Alex Lewis before the injury issues began, according to Vacchiano.

Vacchiano also reported that Osemele was a candidate to be traded as Jets GM Joe Douglas ponders unloading some of the team's higher-priced talent in advance of the deadline.

The 30-year-old Osemele is due $11.7 million in 2020 and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The Jets acquired Osemele from the Raiders in March sending a fifth-round pick to Oakland, with the Jets getting the Raiders' sixth-round pick (through the Bears).

Osemele, who played the first four years of his career with the Ravens, was a Pro-Bowler and first team All-Pro in 2016, and was a Pro-Bowler in 2017.
