Jets rank as No. 8 special team unit

Rick Gosselin, a 47-year veteran of analyzing special teams releases a yearly review and ranks the 32 units across the NFL. Last year, the Jets landed as the best unit in the league, but they're still highly-touted this season.

Gosselin's system has long been a highly-respected system to grade out the league's specialists. Teams are ranked in 22 kicking-game categories and assigned points according to their standing - one for best, 32 for worst.

The Jets landed at the No. 8 overall spot in Gosselin's latest ranking for 2019 with 324 overall points.

Of the 22 categories in Gosselin's system, the Jets finished in second in the NFL in punt return yards with 11.6, third in the NFL in opponent yards allowed per kickoff with 19, third in opponent punt yards and third in opponent net punt yards with 38.8.

With several top-five finishes, the reason the Jets likely slipped was their tough place-kicking outings this season. Sam Ficken finished the season as the Jets kicker, but he was the fourth kicker the Jets rostered in 2019 after the team decided to move on from Pro Bowler Jason Myers last offseason. The Jets finished second to last in the NFL in field goal percent in 2019 at a 68 percent conversion rate.

The Jets' special teams were once again led by Brant Boyer for the fourth-straight season. Boyer, a holdover from Todd Bowles' coaching staff, was retained by Adam Gase last year when he was hired by the team as their head coach. Boyer was also inked to an extension last January.
