"Jermaine has an Achilles that's going to require surgery, so he'll be out for the year with that," head coach Rex Ryan said Monday. "That's obviously bad news there for us. The young man was really coming on. We're certainly going to miss him."
To replace Cunningham on the roster, the Jets signed lineman Bruce Campbell. He was in camp with the Jets for a tryout over the summer.
Campbell (6'7", 314) is a 26-year-old tackle out of Maryland who was selected by Oakland in the fourth round (106th overall) of the 2010 draft. He played 14 games for the Raiders in 2010-11 before being traded to Carolina in 2012. He then played five games for the Panthers in 2012 but was waived/injured a year ago.
While Campbell might replaced Cunningham's roster spot, he can't replace the role that Cunningham could have served. Cunningham was always an upside addition for this roster, so more sub-package work will fall back to Quinton Coples, Jason Babin and Calvin Pace. This also opens an opportunity for Trevor Reilly to sneak up the roster and make a fraction of the contributions that Cunningham otherwise might have.
No matter what happens, come cutdowns the Jets might be in the market for another outside linebacker.
