In the absence of playing football, Goodson said he ran and lifted weights two times a day, often alone. He also monitored his diet in hopes that he can provide "a spark" to the Jets immediately.Often times when a player holds out, their return to the team is followed shortly by a soft-tissue injury. Goodson's case is no holdout, but being abruptly thrown into team activities is something the conditioning staff will monitor closely and could limit Goodson's role over the first few weeks.
"I'm healthy, strong, fast and ready to play," Goodson said.
Still, even the most strenuous training cannot simulate professional football. Having not played since Dec. 30 and missed all of training camp, Goodson will have to brush off rust while acclimating to new teammates this week.
"To be out there running and doing stuff like that, it’s nothing like being in football shape," Goodson said. "Going through a week of practice, I think I’ll be ready."
It's been a bumpy road for Goodson since the spring, but he's taken the steps to get his life back on track. Between his time away from the team, his contract restructure and his efforts to stay in football shape, Goodson has made good faith efforts to clearly show his dedication to helping the team.
A little perspective is always a good thing, and we credit Corey for writing back in May that the team was wise to be deliberate with Goodson.
The simple fact is that the Jets took the level approach, saw the matter through and their patience could benefit the team with Chris Ivory unable to stay on the field. While it was the Goodson signing that has been called an "embarrassment" repeatedly by many in the MSM, I'd argue that the Ivory signing looks like the worse of the two four weeks into the season.
Bilal Powell has proven that he's capable of running the ball and Goodson is an upgrade over Alex Green in the run and passing games. Geno and Marty seem to like to run screen plays, so adding Goodson as an element to screens might help out a quarterback who struggled with them last week.
We're happy to see Goodson is back with the team and hope he can be productive in the offense very soon.
