On Tuesday, the team worked out DE Jonathan Massaquoi, who last played for the Falcons, Brian Costello reported.
The Jets also worked out DE Quanterus Smith, who was waived by the Broncos in April (Sept. 15).
[sny-editorial userid="bentdouble"] With Mauldin out for an uncertain amount of time following his head injury in Sunday's game, the Jets have obviously got their eyes on the market for edge defenders. Mauldin was being used primarily as a situational pass rusher, so that's probably the role they will be looking to fill if they decide to add some depth.
Smith fits that profile, having played exactly that role off the bench with the Broncos in 2014, although he didn't record a sack in the regular season. He has some knee issues in his past, which is why he wasn't with a team in the preseason.
Massaquoi, who -- like Smith -- is a former fifth-round pick, is a more established and versatile player, with seven starts and six sacks over the past two seasons with the Falcons. Smith, at age 25 and listed at 255 pounds, is a couple of years younger and weighs about 10 pounds less than Massaquoi. An alternative option could be to consider activating Deion Barnes from the practice squad. Jason Babin, who was released in the preseason, worked out for the Ravens on Tuesday and later agreed to a contract with them, Mike Garafolo reported.
