Now Commenting On:

With the No. 195 pick of the NFL Draft, the Jets selected cornerback Brandon Dixon out of Northwest Missouri State.

Dixon, who is 5-foot-11 and 203 pounds, was a first-team Division II All-American selection and first-team All-MAIAA pick. Dixon transferred to Northwest Missouri State after spending two years at Joliet Junior College.

Dixon was a top performer at the NFL Combine during the 40-yard dash where he came away with a time of 4.41 seconds.

Scouts say that he has more than ideal size and has solid body control. They add, though, that he does not have elite explosion and sometimes reacts slowly.

This could be viewed as another example of "doubling up" as I mentioned after the Shaq Evans pick. Dixon is another physical corner with 4.4 speed, this time from a small school. We're at the stage of the draft where this applies to pretty much everyone, but it's still worth mentioning: He will need to impress on special teams to improve his chances of contributing. Dixon is a well-built guy who could perhaps convert to safety down the road.

Big body and good musclature, the Jets competition in camp should be good.  At present Dixon projects to a dime prospect with upside.  I'll echo Bent's points above - for a player like Dixon to stick with the Jets this summer he is going to need to demonstrate that he can be a demon on special teams.
