With less than three months to go until the 2019 NFL Draft, Sports Illustrated's Kalyn Kahler's updated mock draft has the Jets opting to keep their third overall pick for a pass rusher.
In this mock, Kahler has Gang Green picking Michigan prospect Rashan Gary.
The defensive tackle is described as the total package with the ability to play the edge or inside -- pushing him into the top three of the mock. The combination of Gary's size, strength and athleticism makes the 21-year-old a difficult matchup.
Gary, a New Jersey native, would work well with Jets' new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who prefers an edge player. The 6-foot-5, 283 pounder picked up 9.5 sacks over three seasons with Michigan. Gary compiled 20 solo tackles with 18 assisted tackles last year.
If the Jets decide instead to upgrade their offensive weapons around Sam Darnold with their first pick, New York may need to trade down. Top end talent is projected to be defense-heavy.
SNY's Scott Thompson provides five Senior Bowl players the Jets should be watching to supplement their third overall pick, including Lousiana Tech pass rusher Jaylon Ferguson. The 23-year-old produced 17.5 sacks and 65 combined tackles in just 13 games. In fact, he broke the FBS career sacks record with 45 over his four seasons.
