Now Commenting On:

The Jets announced the signings of linebacker A.J. Edds and offensive lineman Markus Zusevics.

To make room on the roster, the team cut wide receiver Dwight Jones and offensive lineman Jacolby Ashworth.

Edds and Zusevics both tried out with the Jets and both played at Iowa.

Edds, 26, was a fourth-round choice by Miami in the 2010 NFL Draft but spent the season on injured reserve with an ACL tear. He hooked on with New England the following year and made his pro debut in the first two games of the 2011 season for the Patriots, went on their practice squad, then was signed off the squad by Indianapolis and played nine more games that year for the Colts. Edds had another ACL tear in 2012. In 2013, he was in training camp with the Pats, but was cut before the season.

The 25-year-old Zusevics tore his pectoral muscle while participating in the benchpress at the 2012 NFL Combine workouts. He was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in May 2012, was placed on the Pats' IR in the summer of 2013, and was then released.

Zusevics was actually on the Patriots active roster for the last six weeks of 2012, although he was never activated. He did play for them in two preseason games, one in 2012 and one in 2013. He seemed to be working as the first-team right tackle at rookie mini-camp.

Edds was a strongside OLB in a 4-3 system in college, although most of his reps at the NFL level have been as a middle linebacker. Coverage is regarded as his strength though, so it's perhaps no surprise that he was being used at the SAM position at the rookie mini-camp. That would allow him to match up directly with a tight end. While Edds is a long-shot to make the final roster, it sounds like he will be competing for reps backing up Calvin Pace, although if he impresses with his coverage abilities he could also be in line to spell one of the inside linebackers in the nickel.

The release of Jones and Ashworth is not really a surprise as the Jets were at the roster limit before they made these moves. Jones was at the rookie camp and spent a couple of weeks on the Jets practice squad at the end of last year, but Ashworth never really got a chance. I therefore wouldn't be surprised to see him brought back for another workout if the need arises at the position.

I'll be back with a scouting report on Edds and Zusevics once I've reviewed the footage.
