The Browns' choices for their No. 1 pick seem to have come down to two choices just three days away from the NFL Draft: Sam Darnold or Josh Allen?
Yes, there is always the prospect of the Browns going with RB Saquon Barkley with their first overall selection, knowing they have the No. 4 pick later on. However, experts including SI's Peter King see Cleveland getting their quarterback first before addressing anywhere else.
Recently, rumblings about Allen going No. 1 have gained some steam. But King's most trusted source says Allen is too much of a risk, and the Browns don't want to get another quarterback pick wrong.
Darnold, then, would be the go-to with the first overall pick.
"But a couple of factors influenced my call here," King explains. "One is Mike Mayock. The NFL Network conscience has a way of cutting through the gorgonzola and stating reality. He said the Browns have made too many mistakes on quarterbacks, and they can't go risky here. It made a lot of sense -- and mayock is a guy who loves the long-term Josh Allen.
"And someone I trust, who is very often right and is very well-connected, told me Sunday it's not Allen. ... Darnold is safe, with strong potential, and most NFL folks think he can turn around the turnover bug (27 career turnovers in 26 USC games)."
Why does this matter for the Jets? GM Mike Maccagnan traded up to No. 3 to draft a quarterback. Which quarterback they draft, though, is the main question.
The Jets have expected for a while that they wouldn't see Allen or Darnold at their pick. However, with the news of the Giants loving Barkley, they could see one of these quarterbacks. If King's report rings true, Allen could be on the board at No. 3.
As SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has reported, the Jets may give Allen consideration if he falls past the Browns and Giants. But it appears the best bet is between Josh Rosen and Baker Mayfield for the Jets' selection on Thursday night.
In the event the Browns take the risk and go with Allen, the Jets may be more inclined to take Darnold if the Giants pass on him. Darnold was added to the Jets' Top 30 visits at the very end as the Giants-Barkley connection made headlines.
The beauty of the NFL Draft is that just like the fans, the Jets will have to wait and see what the Browns and Giants do before they pick their hopeful Quarterback of the Future.
