2013 was a challenging year for Mangold, but I was impressed with how he dealt with the added responsibilities that starting rookies at left guard and quarterback no doubt placed upon him.
While Mangold only ended up in the middle of the pack in the ratings for PFF, he did end up ranked as the fourth best pass blocking center in the NFL and was outstanding over the final four weeks, allowing no pressure and posting a +5.1 run blocking grade over that period. His run blocking grade for the year as a whole was down near the bottom of the league, but that likely had more to do with the line as a whole struggling, especially the guy to his immediate left.
Having said all of that, I don't doubt that his inclusion has more to do with his reputation than placing into the correct context any in-depth performance evaluation. He is well respected around the league with good reason though and we're pleased to see the Jets represented in Honolulu next weekend.
