Now Commenting On:

Over at ESPN New York Rich Cimini runs down the top priorities for the Jets and general manager John Idzik over the next couple of months. Tucked neatly between the top priority (getting rid of some of their bigger contracts) and their plans for the draft is the question of how Idzik will elect to spend their considerable cap space:

First, he should re-sign right tackle Austin Howard and kicker Nick Folk, both of whom will be unrestricted free agents. After that, he needs to find a wide receiver, a tight end and a safety. Names on the radar will be Eric Decker, Brandon Pettigrew and Jairus Byrd, respectively.

It's not made clear whether Cimini has specifically heard that the Jets have been linked with those players or is just anticipating that they'll be considering the top talent at each of those positions, but they are some interesting names.

The Jets met with Howard at the combine last year to talk contracts with the then-restricted free agent, but we're hopeful an extension for the 26-year old will be taken care of before then this time around. As for Folk, he got the chance to test the market before returning last year, so it will be interesting if he gets than opportunity again.
