ESPN's Todd McShay stuck with Wyoming QB Josh Allen for the Jets No. 6 pick in his latest mock draft.
McShay understands that the Jets will be heavy contenders in the race to land free-agent QB Kirk Cousins. But if they miss out on his talents, he thinks a guy like Allen would be a good fit as his golden arm can make any throw on the field.
"The Jets are another team in the Cousins sweepstakes, but assuming they miss out they'd be thrilled if Allen (or Baker Mayfield) was available here," McShay wrote. "Allen has the best arm talent in the draft and can make any throw. The concern over his 56.3 percent completion last season at Wyoming is probably overblown, but there are some accuracy issues with multidimensional throws. He's more of a project than some other QBs in this class, but he definitely has the highest ceiling."
In his last mock draft, McShay also brought up the fact that if Mayfield is on the board, the Jets could take him instead.
Allen threw for 3,202 yards with 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in his sophomore season. However, his production dropped this season to 1,812 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also suffered a shoulder injury, and was forced to miss the final two regular season games this year.
An impressive Senior Bowl outing, though, helped raise Allen's draft stock, and his powerful arm was on full display during the NFL Combine as well.
He may have the "prototypical QB build", as McShay points out, but Allen is very raw with his skillset. He has a cannon for an arm, but his footwork and decision-making will need to improve at the NFL level.
