With Bryce Petty set to make his first start of the season on Sunday, optimism is not high. However, based on some of their previous games this season, there could be a potential silver lining to having to turn to their back-up quarterback.
Earlier in the year, Bart Scott made the point that when a back-up quarterback enters the game, you have to be aware of the fact that he might have better chemistry with the reserves than the starters, since that's who he would have been throwing most of his passes to in preseason, practice and while on the scout team.
The Jets experienced this first hand when they lost to back-ups Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Moore earlier in the season. Rookie Chris Godwin had a career high five catches for 68 yards in the Bucs game and Anthony Fasano - who entered the Dolphins' game with no receptions - had three catches including a crucial touchdown.
To date, the Jets haven't seen much production from the likes of Chad Hansen and ArDarius Stewart, but Petty displayed some chemistry with both in preseason, especially in the Giants game where he found Stewart for two touchdowns and Hansen on a two-point conversion. In a similar situation last year, he seemed to have good chemistry with Robby Anderson and it's telling that his first two passes on Sunday were caught by Lawrence Thomas and Neal Sterling.
While it seems unlikely Petty will be able to win any of these last three games, perhaps this will be a positive move anyway if it enables the rookies to get going.
