There's plenty of discussion right now about whether McCown should return for 2018, and that seems increasingly feasible. Before the season, the assumption was that McCown would be one-and-done and that the Jets would end up with a rookie under center next year. However, McCown has stayed healthy and played more consistently than anyone expected, especially with the lack of established pass-catching threats on the roster.
The Jets will want to avoid a situation like they had last season when they ended up waiting until the eve of training camp to extend Ryan Fitzpatrick for an amount far higher than his age, skill-set or body or work realistically warranted.
McCown is even older than Fitzpatrick was when the Jets re-signed him, but has been at least as good as Fitzpatrick was in 2015, so who's to say that he won't demand a similar sum? In addition, he's already earned $1.5 million in incentives on top of his $6 million base salary, which will hit the salary cap next season along with whatever they pay him in any extension. While the Jets have plenty of cap room, they also have lots of other needs and several players out of contract that will need to be prioritized.
If the Jets can lock McCown up for a reasonable amount, it will provide them with a nice safety net and a good mentor for the rookie quarterback they are expected to bring in. Then again, the Jets could surprise us and go in a completely different direction
