Jets head coach Todd Bowles spoke Monday about how the team needs to take one game at a time, so let's now focus on the Jets' next opponent: the Carolina Panthers. After an inconsistent start, the Panthers won their last three games and they are also coming off their bye, so there's no advantage there for the Jets.
There seemed to be some grumbling among the players when the Panthers traded wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin when they were 5-3, but they still beat the Falcons in their next game before blowing out the Dolphins on Monday Night Football to move to 7-3.
Without Benjamin, the Panthers are relying on rookies Christian McCaffrey and Curtis Samuel to step up alongside new No. 1 receiver Devin Funchess. That's happened so far, as McCaffrey has scored three touchdowns in the past two games, and Samuel caught a career-high five passes in the last game. They're also set to get tight end Greg Olsen back for the first time since week two.
The Panthers are also solid on defense, especially in the front seven with Kawann Short anchoring the line, the ageless Julius Peppers still racking up sacks off the edge and Luke Kuechly leading an athletic group of linebackers. This won't be an easy game for the Jets, but it should be a good barometer of where they stand.
