Once the Jets' game is over on Sunday afternoon, many Jets fans will probably be tuning in to the Giants' game to check on Geno Smith in his controversial first start for the Giants. Most are assuming this isn't going to end well for Smith and the Giants, but what if he defies expectation and actually does quite well?
The main indirect impact on the Jets of any Giants success between now and the end of the season would be that the Giants could end up with a better record so that the Jets pick earlier in next year's draft. In addition, if Smith (or Davis Webb) can establish themselves as a viable starter option for next year, then maybe that's one fewer team in the mix for a young quarterback. If the Jets hadn't lost last week, a Giants win over the Raiders would have benefited the Jets' playoff push too, but that's less of a concern right now.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Smith's unexpected resurgence would be how it might reset perceptions on how he was dealt with in his time with the Jets. Would Mike Maccagnan come under fire for not re-signing Smith after the 2016 season? Would Todd Bowles and his staff - and maybe Rex Ryan too - be criticized for not giving him enough opportunities or failing to develop him? Maybe John Idzik's draft history would be viewed differently too and the Jets will also be considered to have made a mistake in cutting ties with him.
Whatever happens, the fallout is going to interesting.
