While the Jets have had a head start on their preparation for Sunday's game in Tampa, their opponent seems to be in disarray following a blowout loss in New Orleans. It's not just the 30-10 outcome or the fact that they dropped to 2-6 on the season; it's the matter of how.
Winston, already dealing with a shoulder injury, will be out for several weeks after he was knocked out of the game after taking another big hit. Evans, the Bucs' star receiver, instigated a fight with a blind-side hit after the whistle and has been suspended for Sunday's game. To make matters worse, defensive end William Gholston, who has started six of eight games, was stretchered off with a neck injury.
Fitzpatrick struggled in Winston's place, although he managed to throw a touchdown pass in garbage time. The Jets will be salivating at the chance to face their former teammate.
While the long week should be a benefit, it didn't work out that way last season when the Jets suffered a blowout loss to the Chiefs following a Thursday night win, also against the Bills. Around the league, several teams who appeared to have been reeling have turned their fortunes around with unexpected wins this year, including the Jets, who themselves broke a three-game losing streak on Thursday night.
Going into the bye week at 5-5 would be huge for the Jets, so they need to ensure they don't overlook the Bucs and prepare themselves for what will likely still prove to be a tough road game.
