The thought of McCown returning for a second season is becoming increasingly viable as the weeks progress. Most people assumed that McCown would have been replaced by now, as the Jets were expected to quickly fall out of contention. In fact, some doubted he could avoid injury long enough to get to that point. However, the Jets have managed to keep him upright and the offense has far outperformed expectations.
Something else, which seemed even more implausible than a McCown extension at the start of the year, is very much in play. If he keeps up his current level of play, McCown has a strong case to be selected for the Pro Bowl; maybe even stronger than any other player on the entire roster.
Right now, McCown is in the top five in the AFC for passing yardage and in fourth place for touchdown passes and quarterback rating. With one of the players ahead of him being Deshaun Watson, who is out for the season, McCown really does have a realistic case for at least being an alternate. Quarterbacks can often get to the Pro Bowl almost by default as most of the top signal-callers guide their team to the postseason and end up sitting out as a result. However, McCown arguably could make a case for being selected even before a few extra spots open up for the alternates.
The downside for the Jets is that while McCown's consistent play keeps him in the lineup, this also entitles him to earn more incentives. He's already earned over $1 million on top of his base salary, stands to earn $1 million more if he retains his job all year and could potentially earn a few million more if the Jets shock everyone and make it to the postseason.
Who knows? Maybe McCown will end up having to sit out the Pro Bowl himself because the Jets make a postseason run!
