There has been a lot of talk among the players about how the Jets believe they can be a playoff team, having gone toe-to-toe with one of the league's elite teams in Sunday's game. They believe they could have beaten the Patriots, which by extension means they're capable of beating anyone. So is this actually a realistic goal?
At 3-3 the Jets could easily win enough games over the next few months that they would be in postseason contention when we get to December. Equally, they could go on a losing streak and bottom out with four or five wins to land another high pick in next year's draft. Both eventualities are still in play, because although the Jets were in Sunday's game right until the closing moments, they also gave up 24 unanswered points at home one week after struggling to a three-point win over the league's worst team.
Ultimately, the Jets are an inconsistent team with some glaring weaknesses and it's too soon to consider them a realistic contender, even though they could theoretically sneak into the postseason. However, they're starting to show that they have an identity and some semblance of a nucleus. Surely that has to be better than the anticipated roster devoid of talent and in need of a regime change, even if that would have produced an elite pick and the prospect of a franchise quarterback.
