Former Jets QB Chad Pennington said the "perfect scenario" for the team would be to re-sign free agent QB Josh McCown and select a franchise QB in the upcoming NFL Draft.
"That's a perfect scenario, in my opinion, if you have a high draft pick," Pennington told SNY at the NFL Combine. "Because you have to have a veteran who understands what he's there for. You have to have a veteran who is willing and able to sacrifice his ego and work with the young player -- and pour his experiences into that young player so he can be as good as he can be."
McCown, 38, completed 267 of 397 passes for 2,926 yards, with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13 games this past season for the Jets.
Regarding potential franchisem quarterbacks in this year's Draft, the Jets -- who pick at No. 6 -- may have a chance to nab Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield, or Josh Allen.
Pennington also discussed another potential Jets QB option -- noting that he's interested in the situation with pending free agent QB Kirk Cousins.
"First of all, he's a really good person. ... And I really respect him, to be honest with you, to see how he has performed under those conditions the last two years, where you blatantly have a team that says 'we really don't believe in you, but here you go with the franchise tag.' And to perform at that level? I think that says a lot about his character and who he is."
