On Saturday afternoon, President Donald Trump held a call with the commissioners of the major U.S. sports leagues, discussing the response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Trump said on the call that he believes the NFL season should start on time in September.

Schefter also reports that Trump said that he hopes to have fans back in stadiums and arenas by August and September, though it's unclear if medical experts have found that to be a realistic timeline.

Meanwhile, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reportedly told Trump that since the pro sports leagues were among the first to shut down, he would love for them to lead the way in helping boost the economy once an "all clear" is given by public health officials.

According to Schefter, Trump also raised the idea of the leagues working together to lobby for tax credits that used to exist for fans, such as the ability to deduct concessions and tickets from taxes, which would be a way for fans to have easier access to attend games in a rebuilding economy.

"I just spoke with the commissioners, leaders, I would say virtually all of the sports leagues. ... They want to get back," Trump then said during his daily coronavirus briefing. "They've got to get back. They can't do this. Their sports weren't designed for it. The whole concept of our nation wasn't designed for it. We're going to have to get back. We want to get back soon -- very soon."

"Absolutely, I want fans back in the arena," Trump also said. "Whenever we're ready. As soon as we can, obviously. And the fans want to be back, too. ... I can't tell you a date, but I think it's going to be sooner rather than later."

Trump then said that he wasn't committing to having fans back in arenas by August, saying "We're going to see where we are. But that would be great, if we could."

Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom said that he doesn't agree that the NFL will start in September, at least not in the state of California.

"Right now I'm just focusing on the immediate, but that is not something I anticipate happening in the next few months," Newsom said.

People on the call included the following commissioners and presidents:

Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the National Hockey League
Cathy Engelbert, Commissioner of the Women's National Basketball Association
Don Garber, Commissioner of Major League Soccer
Roger Goodell, Commissioner of the National Football League
Rob Manfred, Commissioner of Major League Baseball
Vince McMahon, President of the WWE
Jay Monahan, Commissioner of the PGA Tour
Adam Silver, Commissioner of the National Basketball Association
Dana White, Ultimate Fighting Championship
Roger Penske, IndyCar
Michael Whan, Commissioner of the LPGA Tour
Vince McMahon, President of the WWE
Drew Fleming, President of the Breeders Cup

Tom Brady is now a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Jets should be glad to see him out of the AFC East. Brady had the Jets' number during his Pats career, going 29-7 against them in the regular season (though one of those loses came in a game Brady didn't start) and 1-1 in the playoffs.

But here are seven times the Jets took care of business against Brady.

1. On Dec. 22, 2002, the Jets defeated the Patriots 30-17, and went on to edge out the Pats as AFC East champs the following week. The Jets went 7-2 following head coach Herm Edwards' 'You play to win the game' speech.

Sam Darnold is entrenched as the Jets' starting quarterback, but finding a veteran backup for him seemed to still be a need for the team.

Now, it looks like the the Jets have found their answer in former Ravens and Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, as his agent announced that Flacco has signed a one-year deal with the Jets.

SNY Insider Ralph Vacchiano has confirmed that Flacco's deal is worth $1.5 million, though he could earn another $3 million in incentives.

The Jets have no intention of trading Jamal Adams despite their latest impasse in contract negotiations, according to a source. And they expect that they will eventually sign him to a lucrative contract that, as promised, will make him a "Jet for life."

That has long been the plan, as both CEO Christopher Johnson and GM Joe Douglas have repeatedly said, and nothing has changed even though Adams' camp has grown frustrated with the pace of recent talks. As Douglas promised, he reached out to Adams' agents shortly after the draft for initial discussions about a contract. But the Jets' position is they want to wait before giving him a long-term extension.

Adams, who is entering the fourth year of his four-year, $22.2 million rookie contract, wants his money now.

General manager Joe Douglas has said time and time again that he wants to make safety Jamal Adams a "Jet for life," but the latest news regarding a possible contract extension doesn't sound very promising.

According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, Adams' representation and the Jets have had multiple conversations since the NFL Draft, but the talks have "reached an impasse," as the Jets want to wait on a new deal for the star safety, while Adams' camp believes the Jets are "dragging their feet."

Per ESPN, the possibility of a trade has come up in recent talks, but the Jets have no desire to trade their young Pro Bowler, while Adams is believed to be open to being traded if things can't get worked out.

Entering his 16th year in the NFL this season, Frank Gore likely knew he wasn't going to find a starting job anywhere around the league. So, as he decided once again to own the title of oldest running back in the NFL for another season, Gore wanted to go play for a team with a dynamic running game and a lead back he thought he could complement well.

Gore found that with the Jets and Le'Veon Bell

The five-time Pro Bowler spoke with the media on Thursday via Zoom, where he mentioned that playing for head coach Adam Gase once again -- he did so with the Miami Dolphins in 2018 and earlier in his career with San Francisco when Gase was an assistant -- was a big reason why he joined Gang Green. But the prospect of working with Bell, a running back he knows very well, was intriguing.

It has been speculation for a couple of years now, but Frank Gore doesn't listen to those who believes he is going to call it quits. He's had a great career -- Hall of Fame worthy -- but he's just not done yet.

That's why Gore signed a one-year deal with the Jets this year, setting him up to play his 16th year in the NFL. It wasn't that hard of a decision to make, as he told media on Thursday during a Zoom conference call that he knew from his play last season he still had something left in the tank.

His son, Frank Gore Jr., thought so as well.

The Jets have already beefed up their running back depth this offseason, but could they look to add another quality back?

According to a report from Michael Silver of NFL Network, the Jets, Seahawks, and Eagles have shown interest in free agent running back Devonta Freeman

Per the report, the Seahawks have one-year deal worth up to $4 million on the table for Freeman, while the veteran has "attracted interest" from the Jets and Eagles.

ESPN's Mike Greenberg is sick of the Sam Darnold disrespect.

During "Get Up" on Wednesday, Greenberg asked his panelists Tim Hasselbeck and Domonique Foxworth who will be the best quarterback in the AFC East in three years. Greenberg believes there is only one true answer, but he is astounded to here something else.

At first, Foxworth and Greeny agreed that Bills QB Josh Allen, who Hasselbeck picked, won't be that guy. He statistically was the least accurate quarterback last season with a 58.8 completion percentage.

By all indications, general manager Joe Douglas and the Jets' personnel staff addressed many of the team's areas of need this offseason. Particularly on the offensive line and at wide receiver, the Jets will have a bit of a different look in 2020.

But looking ahead to the 2020 season, there are a handful of players whose play will dictate whether the Jets will improve on last year's 7-9 record, or if they'll fall flat in Adam Gase's second season.

With Tom Brady now calling Tampa Bay home, the AFC East could be up for grabs, but can the Jets capitalize? The answer to that question may very will hinge on the play of these five players…

Jets GM Joe Douglas had a mission of adding not just starting offensive linemen to his roster this offseason, but having depth behind them as well. That's why Cameron Clark, a tackle out of UNC Charlotte, was taken in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

And who was one of the first people to hit him up to congratulate him? None other than the Jets' first-round pick, Mekhi Becton.

"I talked to Mekhi the day before the draft, all of us were talking. When I got drafted, he hit me up," Clark told the media on Monday during a Zoom conference call.

When Jets GM Joe Douglas called Mekhi Becton to say that he was being selected 11th overall, he mentioned a talk the two of them had about the Louisville product's goals in the NFL. Douglas said he was ready to work with him to get his "team and personal" ones accomplished.

It all starts next season.

During a Zoom conference call with media on Monday, Becton gave his rookie goals. It was one team goal and one personal goal.

The Jets continue to hold their virtual offseason program via Zoom meetings, but that isn't stopping quarterback Sam Darnold from getting some throws in at the beach.

In a video posted by former NFL quarterback and now noted passing instructor Jordan Palmer, Darnold is seen working on his footwork before airing one out, all while seemingly still practicing proper social distancing.

It was reported in late March that Darnold was quarantining in southern California while working out with Bills quarterback Josh Allen and new Redskins quarterback Kyle Allen as well.

After just one season with the Jets, running back Ty Montgomery has found a new home.

Montgomery has signed a deal with the New Orleans Saints, the team announced on Friday afternoon, though terms of the deal were not given.

The 27-year-old put up solid numbers as a receiver turned running back in three seasons with the Packers and a brief stint with the Ravens, leading the Jets to sign him to a one-year contract last April.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent out a memo to all 32 clubs on Friday night explaining that team facilities can begin to reopen on May 19, but only in places where local restrictions have been eased.

Because New Jersey still has strict stay at home restrictions in place, the Jets and Giants are currently among the group of teams that cannot reopen on Tuesday.

"It takes more time than four days to reopen a facility that has been shut down for two months," the Giants said in a team statement, via SNY's Ralph Vacchiano. "We are subject to state regulations. Bottom line, when we are cleared on all fronts to go back, we will, in an orderly, systematic, safe way to protect those in our building. It has been a process and protocol we have been developing for the last month or two."

Some more questions, and some more answers, in the latest edition of my SNY Jets mailbag:

If the reports are true that Logan Ryan is signing with the Jets, do you think their secondary can be a top 5 unit this season? - @SpriggsyFresh

First, let me tell you about what I've reported and what I know about Ryan and the Jets: They have had some interest in him for a while, but they needed his asking price to go way down. I assume by now it has. I know the Jets have spoken to his agent. But they haven't made a formal offer and as far as I can tell, nothing is imminent.

The Jets have been connected to veteran CB Logan Ryan for awhile now, with SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reporting the team has remained in touch with his agents regarding a potential deal for next season.

Speaking with Peter Schrager on Good Morning Football Thursday, Ryan addressed the Jets rumors, and he agrees it would make tons of sense to return to his Jersey roots.

"The Jets, it makes a lot of sense because I'm from the area," Ryan said. "I went to Rutgers, 20 minutes from (MetLife Stadium) so familiar with New Jersey. Blue collar, that's how I grew up. I came out of Rutgers in the third round to New England, had to do my job, [and I] continue to do that. That would make sense for sure, but like I said, I'm just trying to do what's best for my family and everything like that."

The offseason roster-building is over, for the most part. What you currently see with your favorite NFL team is likely what you're going to get.

So what will you get in the AFC East in 2020? And how do the Jets stack up?

Here, with the help of some NFL sources, is a look at what and how those teams did, and what their outlook is for the (hopefully) upcoming season. They are listed in my projected order of finish in the AFC East:

The NFL recently released the schedule for the 2020 season, with the caveat that things are flexible between now and Week 1 (and beyond) due to the uncertainty surrounding all activity in the United States due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While the league currently plans to start the season on time, it's very likely that a coronavirus vaccine will not be ready by then. Dr. Anthony Fauci said Tuesday that a vaccine would "more likely than not" be ready within a year or two.

With the preseason scheduled to begin in roughly three months, Jets QB Sam Darnold was asked Monday whether he was apprehensive about returning before a vaccine is available.

Logan Ryan (Winslow Townson)
Logan Ryan (Winslow Townson)

SNY's Ralph Vacchiano is hearing from sources that while interest is certainly high on the Jets' end regarding free agent CB Logan Ryan -- as well as other teams having interest -- no formal offer has been made. Still, the Jets remain in touch with his agents.

The Jets have the cap space to sign Ryan, with OverTheCap estimating it's just under $15 million at the moment. According to Vacchiano, Ryan was seeking a short-term deal worth around $10 million per season, similar to his contract with the Tennessee Titans that was three years and $30 million. But being on the market so long lowers his price tag, so Douglas can scoop him up for a steal.

New York has already brought in Pierre Desir this offseason, but there is still some uncertainty at the corner position opposite him in Gregg Williams' defense. Bringing in Ryan would shore that spot right up, with some solid depth players in Bless Austin, Arthur Maulet, Nate Hairston and a fifth-round pick who could turn out to be a steal in Virginia's Bryce Hall

C.J. Mosley doesn't want to hear anything about Jamal Adams being on the trade block.

The Pro Bowl linebacker spoke to ESPN about the current speculation surrounding Adams, the trade rumors that have come up recently and his contract situation. If Adams were to leave the Jets, Mosley would think it preposterous.

"To me, I wasn't too worried about that," he told ESPN. "That would be a crazy move."

So many questions … Here are a few more you asked me in this week's edition of the SNY Jets mailbag:

Why haven't the Jets gone after Clowney? -- @BuddhaTaino

Money. Actually, it's more about player value. Jadeveon Clowney may be the best pass rusher on the market, but he wanted more than $20 million per year on a long-term contract, and then reportedly lowered his demands into the $17-18 million range. So far no one thinks he's worth that -- certainly not on a long-term deal. The Jets clearly don't.

Joe Douglas has completely retooled the Jets' offensive line this offseason, but could another upgrade be in the works?

The New Orleans Saints released three-time Pro Bowl guard Larry Warford on Friday, ending what was a very successful tenure with the the team.

The 28-year-old is now a free agent after three straight Pro Bowl appearances with the Saints. He was also extremely durable in New Orleans, missing just four games in three seasons while becoming one of the elite right guards in the NFL.

The Jets announced on Friday afternoon that Betty Wold Johnson, mother of team CEO Christopher Johnson and Woody Johnson, the United States Ambassador to Great Britain and Northern Ireland, died at the age of 99.

"There are very few people in this world who live to 99," former running back Curtis Martin said to the Jets official website. "And I'm sure if you go back and look at everything she did for other people, you could probably write a book on her from a philanthropic standpoint… She had such a charitable heart and a charitable way about her."

"She was just such a wonderful woman," Martin continued. "She was definitely the First Lady of the Jets. She had such a presence there. And as far as the players being like grandchildren to her, I can definitely see that because she was such a warm person. She had a personal interest rooting for the Jets, but just her energy, she had a younger person's energy. And she was just very approachable to everyone who met her.
