Renner, 25, played at the University of North Carolina from 2011-13. He was projected as a potential first-round draft pick before a shoulder injury ended his senior season prematurely.
After spending a year playing in the AFL, Renner had a brief stint on the Baltimore Ravens practice squad last season.
Renner spent his time most recently with the Ravens during training camp this summer after bumping around a few other arena and NFL teams. There's nothing to read into here when it comes to the Jets and what this might mean for Bryce Petty or Geno Smith; there's no chance that Renner could come in and get ahead of them on the depth chart. More than likely this workout is the Jets updating their emergency lists since he's no longer part of the Ravens.
Renner is well regarded in NFL circles; he's a hard worker, a good teammate and a solid leader. But Renner would be best suited as the Jets third stringer or, more likely, a practice squad member.
