The Oakland Raiders are getting closer to a deal with free agent linebacker Erin Henderson, though the Jets are still interested in bringing him back, according to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Henderson, 29, recorded 36 tackles and two forced fumbles last season with the Jets.
The Jets added Henderson in April last year, relatively "late" in the free agency period. He spent 2014 away from football as he addressed his issues with alcohol abuse after a DUI and DWI arrest. In 2015, Henderson came back to the game fully ready to play. Demario Davis saw the starting snaps at linebacker for much of the season for the Jets, but at the end of the year Henderson overtook Davis' role and proved he is capable of starting in this league, especially for a team that could be looking for a stopgap player at the position.
Without Henderson back in the fold, the Jets linebacker problems become even more worrisome. Taiwan Jones might be ready to step up, but that remains to be seen. The Jets should probably invest some middle-round draft picks in linebacker talent to shore up a group headlined by David Harris and Lorenzo Mauldin.
