Jets head coach Todd Bowles met with Muhammad Wilkerson before the defensive end signed his five-year deal this offseason to discuss previous discipline issues, reports NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.
According to Rapoport, Wilkerson acknowleged then that he needed step up this season and take responsibility. Wilkerson was benched in the first quarter of last week's game against the Dolphins after showing up late to a team meeting and missing a walkthrough the previous week.
Rapoport notes that Bowles came into a team that saw players visit bars and strip clubs after bed check occurred.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated's MMQB reported late last week that when Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan came to the team in 2015, there was already an issue with cultures clashing between the regime and Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson.
