Just as the situation between the Jets and safety Jamal Adams begins to mend itself, new information about the NFL trade deadline rumors involving the Pro Bowler came to light on Sunday morning.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Jets asked the Cowboys -- the team that was close to landing Adams this past Tuesday -- for another Pro Bowler in G Zach Martin. Jerry Jones said no immediately, and Jets GM Joe Douglas supposedly followed up with LT Tyron Smith being a part of the deal. That was also a negative for Dallas.
With the Jets' offensive line issues this season, it makes sense that Douglas was trying to see if the Cowboys would give up one of their top linemen for the dynamic safety in Adams. In the end, though, the deal fell through with the Jets wanting a first-round and two second-round picks.
After voicing his frustrations with his name being involved in trade talks in the first place this week, Adams has spoken with Jets owner Christopher Johnson, and it was a positive conversation.
"Me and Mr. Johnson are really close," Adams said. "I have a lot of respect for him. ... that was the guy that i was comfortable with talking to. ... he cares not just about football players. He cares for you as a person."
Adams said he still isn't talking to Douglas, but it will come "eventually."
SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed that the Jets were taking calls on Monday and Tuesday about Adams, and the Cowboys weren't the only team involved. The Baltimore Ravens, who already lost two safeties to season-ending injuries, were also involved.
The off-the-field issues, however, won't be on the Jets' -- or Adams' -- mind on Sunday. New York needs to pick up a win against the 0-7 Dolphins in Miami.
"I'm here, I'm excited to be here," he said. "I'm going to continue to be myself, I'm never going to stop my play for something that happened off the field. I'm going to continue to be a great teammate. I'm going to continue to be the leader I am. I'm going to continue to be me. But at the end of the day, I came in this league to be one of the top safeties to ever play this game. I'm gonna keep working at that each and every day.
"I'm focused on the Miami Dolphins and all we can do is keep our head down and grind."
