Now Commenting On:

While Geno has seen some time on the field since his first game (and subsequent ankle rolling) last Friday, the Jets changed up their rotation from their usual two practice run for Sanchez and Smith this week. Was it a move meant to protect Smith from taking too many reps on a bad ankle too close together? Either way, Geno threw four picks in practice today, by far highest total since the start of training camp.

“It was brutal. It was Geno’s worst day. I think, and obviously, the ankle’s part of it, but [...] way too many picks. [Geno] did not look comfortable today,” Ryan stated. “Obviously he has to come back from it, he will come back from it. It was a bad day. Everybody, we’ve seen it, guys have bad days. But this was a really bad day for Geno.”

While Smith didn't make excuses today after practice, his four interceptions (three of which in 11-on-11 drills) and in 7-on-7s leads Rex to believe that they might keep him from playing this weekend at home.

“I don’t think he’s at one hundred percent. I don’t believe he’s close to one hundred percent right now, but again, that doesn’t mean we have a few more days, that it can’t get a lot better,” Ryan told reporters on Cortland today. “We’ve seen these type of injuries get better in a hurry, so we’ll see how it goes.”

The Jets aren't saying much about his sprain, but ankles can be tricky injuries to come back from, especially at a position where footwork is such an important component.  Smith's recovery might pick up, but knowing the Jets rather hesitate take on bringing players back, Geno might not be seeing much playing time against the Jaguars.  While this might delay a decision, if this continues to bother Smith and keep him from playing at his best, it might make it hard for the Jets to justify making him the starter at the outset of the season.  We'll just have to see where this leads and how Geno responds in the time that he is on the field between now and the third preseason game.
