Ryan is scheduled to play in the Boomer and Cartoon charity softball game next Wednesday at Yankee Stadium that will benefit the Silver Shield Foundation, the NYC PBA Widows’ and Children’s Fund, and the families of fallen NYPD officers Brian Moore, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.
When asked what kind of reception he expected from the New York City crowd Ryan couldn't resist a jab targeted at his former team.
“Yeah, I doubt they’ll still give me (a standing ovation) there. But it’ll be good. You know, hey, we’re the only team in New York anyway. So I thought I’d help out that other city down there.”
Ryan coached the Jets from 2009-14 where he compiled a record of 50-52 that included two trips to the AFC Championship game.
I'd have to be pretty thin-skinned to take offense at the jab from Ryan, so I won't. We get that western New Yorkers have some fierce regional pride about their teams and the distinction between themselves and those in the Tri-State area, so I'm not going to get trolled. We get it! It's weird and quirky such a small area contains three states and about 1/10th of the population of our entire nation .. which is maybe why putting a team actually IN New York City is less of a challenge than it is in other places like Denver ... but it's a trope. And for that reason we wouldn't expect anything less from Rex.
