Background: Aumavae was a first-team all conference honoree at two DII programs after Western Michigan discontinued its program. During the 2010 Draft was seen as an "under the radar" player and the Colts, Pats, Browns and Cowboys all expressed interest in him during the draft process. Aumavae was an undrafted free agent in 2010 but ended up getting released shortly before training camp. Since then, Aumavae has bounced around some of the Indoor and Arena teams before latching back on with the Jets in March of this year. Aumavae is quick off the snap, was known in college to be a penetrator into the backfield and he often was able to make solo tackles as a defensive lineman.
2013 Projection: Aumavae seems the type of player that the Jets like to be patient with, in hopes that some degree maneuvering around the roster and of coaching up could yield. As a defensive lineman, Aumavae has demonstrated his quickness and ability to play one-gap football, but the NFL is a tougher challenge than the Arena league or a DII school. At his size, he's probably best suited as a defensive tackle in a four man line or an end in three man lines. With guys like veteran Antonio Garay, first rounder Sheldon Richardson and UDFA rookie Jake McDonough on the roster as well, Aumavae will compete for a roster spot, but if the Jets like what they see and still can't make him fit initially onto the roster, then the practice squad would certainly be an option.
