MMQB Recapping Round 1: Greg Bedard
Antonio Allen, the 2012 seventh-round pick, came on at the end of the season, and now they have a terrific physical safety to pair with him in Calvin Pryor. Rex Ryan has two young safeties to mold and key his scheme. He can probably kiss GM John Idzik right now.ESPN Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down: Rich Cimini
Calvin Pryor, S: This was a bit of a surprise because the Jets passed on a much-needed cornerback, Darqueze Dennard, but Pryor represents good, not great value at 18 -- and he addresses a need. The Jets' safeties were terrible last season. Pryor is an enforcer, but the question is whether he has the cover skills to help the Jets' pass defense. Rex Ryan believes Pryor has the range to play the deep middle and cover tight ends.CBS Sports: Draft Tracker

They had to get safety help, so this makes sense. He is a thumper in the run game, which will help.
Short bio: Pryor is an intimidating presence over the middle that has also shown the ability to make plays on the football when he drops into coverage. During his three seasons with the Cardinals, Pryor forced nine fumbles and intercepted seven passes.Yahoo Sports: Draft Tracker
Quick take: Last season, the Jets attempted to revive Ed Reed’s career to help the back end of their defense. The experiment failed. The team also lacked a physical presence at the position after LaRon Landry signed with the Colts last offseason. Pryor will immediately add an intimidating force in the secondary and improve the team’s overall coverage.
The Jets, like the Cowboys, were faced with the Manziel Conundrum, but they passed to help out the defense with a missile of a hitter in Pryor, who had a three-game streak of knocking out players last season. The Louisville Slugger is a perfect Rex Ryan-type safety.Overall, the impression of taking Pryor seems a positive one, as it should be. The secondary was a position of need and Pryor was a player who was slated to go in the first round. If there was any surprise, it might have been that the Jets didn't take MSU CB Darqueze Dennard a player who was available and often linked to the Jets.
