The Jets have a new head coach and several new free-agent acquisitions, and quarterback Sam Darnold is optimistic about New York's potential heading into his second year in the NFL.
"It's going to be really fun to play with these guys and kind of get a feel throughout OTAs and training camp how we're going to do things," Darnold said, according to newyorkjets.com. "I'm really excited about where we're going."
Darnold said the team morale is high with Adam Gase replacing Todd Bowles as head coach, new offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.
"Players love him and I think right away our guys are going to notice he's so passionate about the game, it's going to be hard to go out there and not have that passion," Darnold said of Gase. "Same with Gregg Williams on the defensive side. I think the guys are going to love him (Gase) right away and I think we're going to take that passion that he has and form around that and create a really good team around that."
The 21-year-old Darnold threw for 2,865 yards, 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 13 games as a rookie last season. But in Year 2, he has several new playmakers to work with. And each one excites Darnold.
There's Pro Bowl running back Le'Veon Bell, who infamously sat out 2018 with the Steelers. Darnold said he studied Ben Roethlisberger and saw how the Big Ben-Bell dynamic worked.
"All of a sudden he just finds Le'Veon because Le'Veon is there in a friendly spot, numbers to the quarterback," Darnold said. "And he's able to catch the ball and turn it upfield and get a lot of yards after the catch."
Wide receiver Jamison Crowder joins a receiving corps that also features Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa and tight end Chris Herndon.
And New York bolstered its offensive line with the trade of Kelechi Osemele.
"I also think our offensive line is going to be really good with the addition of KO and some of the other guys we have," Darnold said.
Overall? His hopes are high.
"We're going to go out there and try to win every single game this year," Darnold said. "We have that potential with the guys that we have, the coaching staff that we have. I'm very excited about this team."
