As we move into the lead up to the NFL draft, here's a summary of the moves the Jets have made in free agency.

New Additions

Decker, Eric WR

Ford, Jacoby WR

Giacomini, Breno T

Patterson, Dimitri CB

Vick, Michael QB

Analysis: The team upgraded at two crucial offensive positions.  By removing Santonio Holmes and adding Decker, the team has gotten better and shaved cap space in the process.  While Decker can be a productive player with the Jets, the team is likely not done yet at the position with the draft approaching and 12 draft picks.  Mike Vick's addition provides the Jets the best available quarterback from the market and allows the team to play the man who can best help the team this year.  In a perfect world that player would be Geno Smith, but he's going to have to earn it.  The winner of the QB competition will likely be the man who can hold onto the football ... no small feat for either Geno Smith or Mike Vick.  Giacomini is a lateral move at best from Austin Howard but the team saved themselves a lot of money in 2015 and beyond.  The Jets had every opportunity to truly upgrade their cornerback position if they wanted to but the team chose to pass on players like Vontae Davis, Alterraun Verner and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie ... but let's not believe that bringing back Darrelle Revis was more than a remote possibility at best.  Instead, the team went with a risky prospect in the aging Dimitri Patterson.  When he played in 2013, Patterson was impressive but his injury only allowed him to see six games all year.  Between Patterson and Kyle Wilson the team will sort out the second starting cornerback position, but the team would be wise to look to longer-term improvement through the NFL draft.

RE-SIGNEDColon, Willie G

Douzable, Leger DT

Folk, Nick K

Pace, Calvin OLB

Analysis: It was reported that the team was looking to upgrade on Willie Colon, but after some flirting with Geoff Schwartz and Jon Asamoah, the team failed to do so.  The team will return Colon who was a hold-the-fort player for the Jets in 2014, but expect the Jets to foster some competition in camp.  Leger Douzable will return to play a vital reserve role for the Jets in which he was extremely successful in 2013.  Folk comes back on his well deserved new contract after seeing a revival as a kicker in New York.  Calvin Pace will continue to set the edge for the Jets on a two year deal while they consider longer term solutions for his role, likely through the draft.

Cromartie, Antonio CB

Ducasse, Vladimir G

Howard, Austin T

Sanchez, Mark QB

Shugarts, J.B. T

Trufant, Isaiah DB

Analysis: Cromartie and the Jets were parting ways one way or another once that break was made, while he might be the most missed player from among this group, the team might have felt uncomfortable with projecting much from him based on what they knew about his hip.  Austin Howard will be missed as well, but for the money he got from Oakland to become an interior player it is understandable why the Jets didn't offer the same money ... moreso when you consider that Howard's play tailed off badly during the end of the season ...

Berry, Aaron DB

Cribbs, Josh WR

Garrard, David

Hilliard, Lex FB

Holmes, Santonio WR

Mauga, Josh LB

Reed, Ed FS

Reynaud, Darius RB

Winslow, Kellen TE

Analysis: There's very few names that I would expect to see back in connection with the Jets.  The player most likely to return might be Ed Reed who might want to skip spring minis in favor of coming in shortly before the start of training camp.  While many decry Reed's play for the Jets, his play was impressive down the stretch.  Was that a function of the Jets use of Cover Two?  Ed Reed has not announced his retirement yet and might be looking for the right opportunity to come in late.  That team could still be the Jets depending on what happens in the draft.  Moving on, the Jets were flowery in their pulic statement last year when Aaron  Berry was injured early in camp, but he's not been re-signed by the team.  The addition of Dimitiri Patterson might have obviated the team's interest in Berry.  From what we hear, the Jets tongues were wagging about LB Troy Davis (though we don't understand why from what we saw) so don't expect the Jets to bring back Josh Mauga due to a numbers crunch.
