Jets QB Sam Darnold spoke at training camp on Wednesday, weighing in on a bunch of topics as Gang Green gets ready for a season they hope will result in their return to contention. Here are the takeaways...
What does he expect this season?
"A lot of wins. I think for us we're locked in on the present. ... When it comes down to it, it's really focusing one week at a time. That's kind of how it's always been here and I think all our players are really used to it. My teammates are very locked in on what's going on right now."
Do the Jets have enough talent to be a playoff contender?
"Definitely. I think there's enough talent on this roster to be a playoff contender. ... If guys are looking too forward in the future, I feel like we could slip up in the present. ... You definitely have expectations of making it to the playoffs and we definitely have talent to do it. But I think the way that you get there is focusing one week -- really one day at a time."
Advice for unsigned Quinnen Williams
"It's nothing that you deal with personally. Your agents figure it out, really the only agency is trying to figure it out. For me it was about staying patient, knowing exactly what needed to get done. ... Really at the end of the day, those couple of practices that I did miss, I don't know how much of an impact that had on the season. I think for Quinnen it's really about staying patient, understanding what your agency needs to do for you. And that's really it."
His relationship with head coach Adam Gase
"Me and coach Gase have a great relationship off the field, and then on the field we're able to communicate very well with each other. His personality I feel matches up to mine pretty well. We're always in constant communication and I think that's how it should be. ... It's good to be able to have conversations with him that don't include football"
The plan for Le'Veon Bell
"We're gonna give him as much as we can because he's such a talent. At the end of the day, he's here to run the football because he's such a talented running back. There are a lot of ways that we're gonna involve him in this offense."
