The TJB Hall of Fame Inductees roll on with today’s entrant … it’s my honor to introduce today’s entrant: Joe Klecko.

Beyond his amazing physical gifts, his retired number (#73), his key role in the Jets Sack Exchange and the fact that he is the only player who ever was named to the Pro-Bowl at three different positions, there's something in Joe Klecko that makes him immediately connect with regular people.  I for one, think it's the fact that in many ways, he's just like us, and maybe in our minds, if not only for a few fateful twists and turns in his life he could have been one of us -- as content to drive a truck for a living as he was at mauling opposing offensive lines.

Joe Klecko Jr. grew up in the working class suburb of Chester, PA to Polish immigrant parents amidst a proud Polish-American community.  Like his father before him, Joe loved sports, but mostly stuck to pickup games to spend time on his first love, cars.  Although he played football for St. James High School, his time on the field was far too short and he didn't get any attention to play collegiately.  At age 19, Klecko was working as a truck driver and playing semi-professional football with the Ashton Knights.  Temple's equipment manager and organizer of a semi-pro league Joe DiGregorio protected Klecko's eligibility for college by giving him a pseudonym and college, Jim Jones from Poland University.  DiGregorio, with the help of his family and future wife eventually coaxed Klecko to attend college and play for the Temple Owls, something he did reluctantly, not wanted to give up the money he'd already been earning since high school ended.

At Temple, Klecko played under coaching legend Wayne Hardin (the former Navy coach who guided two Heisman Trophy winners in Bellino '60 and Staubach '63) where he learned to take his physical gifts and apply them properly on the gridiron.  Still Klecko wasn't much sought after by the time he finished school and he went to the Jets in the sixth round of the 1977 draft.

Early on, Klecko was pegged to play Defensive Tackle, but due to his speed, they soon moved him to End.  In his first season as an end, he was used mostly in strictly passing situations, but he still lead the league in sacks by a rookie with eight.

Klecko was known around the league as one of the strongest and toughest players.  Seattle Center Blair Bush said of Klecko, that he and his teammates had a term they used for Klecko instead of bull rush "We [called] it, 'The Klecko Skate,' because when he hits you, it looks like your rolling backwards on skates.  Even Hall of Famer Anthony Muñoz would later say that Klecko was the strongest defensive lineman he had ever faced.

Like the rest of Klecko's life to that point, even though he was successful at whatever he did, it was always on his own timetable.  It wasn't until almost a third of the way into his career that he peaked, playing lights out football during the early 80s along with his fellow linemates, Marty Lyons, Mark Gastineau and Abdul Salaam in the fabled Sack Exchange.  Of his time with the Exchange, Klecko would later say that "it was really neat that we were feared as much as we were, we were an awesome group.  Mark and I were the catalysts, but without Marty and Abdul stuffing the run, we couldn't have put the fear in the QB." In 1981, Klecko made his first Pro-Bowl Selection at End, leading the league with 20.5 sacks -- a stat that many suggest the 1981 Jets team was instrumental in ushering into the league, as the NFL officially acknowledged it by creating it in 1982.  The following year of 1982 brought a ruptured patella which he worked back from, and after which he played Defensive Tackle where he continued his assault on offensive lines and quarterbacks alike.

In 1985, the Jets switched to a 3-4 alignment and Bud Carson asked Joe Klecko if he wanted to play the nose.  Although it was his first time as a nose, Klecko had a large task ahead of him, but he was eager and up to the task.  Klecko would line up shading the center and was strong enough to take on multiple interior players, but quick enough to move to either gap on run plays.  Later, Klecko would say, "nobody ever played like I played it since I played it."

Still gifted with the quickness of an end, Klecko would later say "my forte was quickness and it just carried over."  He led the Jets in tackles with 96 and forced fumbles with five and was second in sacks with 7.5 In Bud Carson's defense.  Joe's unique abilites allowed him to control the game from the nose tackle position and he again earned All-Pro honors becoming the first defensive player to be named to the Pro Bowl for three separate positions (DE, DT, NT).

After a bitter loss to New England in the playoffs, the Jets started the 1986 season with an unstoppable 10-1 record, but a series of injuries set the team back.  Klecko was having yet another fantastic season, but was injured and needed arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.  After surgery, he worked hard to return to the field, but was re-injured in a late season game against Pittsburgh and could only watch as the team was knocked off in the divisional playoff by Cleveland in a double overtime game.   Klecko returned in 1987 following major surgery for his final with the Jets, but struggled to overcome mounting injuries, ending his career with the Colts in 1988.

Joe Klecko's career was just like his abilites, unique in every way and marching to the beat of his own drum.  We're sure that Joe would have made a fantastic truck driver or car mechanic, but his choice to play football instead was something that millions of people are grateful for and that his name will endure among the league's all-time greats.

Vacc's 3 Keys: Jets-49ers 00:02:32
SNY NFL Insider Ralph Vacchiano feels the Jets need to keep Bryce Petty under control and let Matt Forte lead the attack against the 49ers.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY.TV:

THE GAME: The Jets (3-9) at the San Francisco 49ers (1-11) at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 4:05 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER: After a few days of rain in the bay area -- which should do wonders for the generally bad field there -- it looks like things will be dry on game day. But it'll be cloudy with temperatures in the upper 50s or maybe around 60 with light winds.

WHAT IT MEANS: Yawn. … Oh, sorry, what was the question? Right, the meaning of this game. Well, it's mostly about draft order, I guess. Currently, the 49ers are picking second and the Jets are picking fourth or fifth. A win and the Jets put themselves in danger of slipping closer to the bottom of the Top 10. A loss, though, and they've got some potential for a Top 3 pick if things break right. Or wrong. Whatever. Also, I suppose this game has meaning if you're on the Todd Bowles Watch.

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will serve as New York's backup quarterback for the remainder of the season, while rookie QB Christian Hackenberg will not play unless starting QB Bryce Petty suffers an injury, head coach Todd Bowles told reporters on Tuesday.

Bowles named Petty the starting quarterback following Monday night's embarrassing 41-10 loss to the Colts, relegating Fitzpatrick to the backup role.

When asked if the rookie quarterback would see any playing time this season, Bowles was quick to say only an injury would lead to Hackenberg taking the field.

Quarterbacks

Ryan Fitzpatrick's performance speaks for itself. He only completed one pass beyond the first down marker, had a completion percentage below 50 percent, and punctuated his performance with an interception on the kind of forced throw he's been unable to get away with all season.

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles named Bryce Petty the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, barring injury, after he replaced Ryan Fitzpatrick midway through Monday's 41-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Bowles said he planned to name Petty the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the year regardless of what happened Monday, adding that Fitzpatrick's ineffectiveness -- 5-for-12, 81 yards, no touchdowns and one interception -- in the loss to the Colts did not factor into the decision.

Petty completed 11 of 25 passes for 135 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions as he replaced Fitzpatrick for the second half, entering a 31-3 game.

Andrew Luck was nearly perfect in his return from a concussion, throwing for four touchdowns, three to Dwayne Allen, in the Indianapolis Colts' 41-10 romp Monday night past the inept New York Jets.

Not that Luck had to work very hard against the hosts, who were booed by a much-less-than-filled MetLife Stadium almost from the outset.

Luck missed last week's loss to Pittsburgh, cleared the NFL's concussion protocol on the weekend, and came back in style with a prime-time performance. He lifted Indianapolis (6-6) into a tie for the lead in the AFC South with Tennessee and Houston.

Fitzpatrick completed 5 of 12 passes for 81 yards with an interception and a 30.2 passer rating as the Jets trailed 24-3 at halftime.

The New York Jets have held a moment of silence before their game against the Indianapolis Colts at MetLife Stadium to honor former running back Joe McKnight, killed last Thursday in Louisiana.

Authorities said McKnight, 28, was shot during a road rage incident that was possibly sparked by a driver cutting off another on a nearby bridge in Terrytown, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. The shooter was identified by police as Ronald Gasser, 54, and he was released overnight, drawing criticism.

McKnight was rated the nation's No. 1 running back recruit when he came out of Louisiana in 2006 and signed with the University of Southern California. He was a fourth-round draft pick of the Jets in 2010 and played three seasons for New York. He spent a season with Kansas City, and most recently played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.

While the Jets have remained noncommittal about their plans to address the quarterback position, Bryce Petty is hoping to get a chance to prove himself as the franchise's quarterback of the future.

"You know what? I don't know," Petty told New York Daily news about being the team's QB next season. "I can only control so much. I hope so. I really do. I love it here. I love this team. I love Coach. Shoot, it'd blow my skirt up if that was the case… I'm going to work to make that happen. You got to go out and get it."

Petty started against the Rams in Week 10 when Ryan Fitzpatrick was out with an injury, and completed 19 of 32 passes for 163 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. It was the first, and so far the only, start of his career.

While some have questioned why Todd Bowles has not given the young quarterback more opportunities to prove himself, many believe it is because Petty has simply not shown enough during practice to earn the starting job.

Brian Bassett:

Welp. Let's face it brother, this season has been a bust.

Maybe it is just me, but it seems like the Faustian bargain made by Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets on the eve of training camp signaled the end. Since then the trajectory of this team has been steadily downward: horrifying play at QB, the season-ending injury to Eric Decker, the immolation of Darrelle Revis as "player who gives a damn" … it has been rough. Hell, even Muhammad Wilkerson's reputation looks to be streaking down the Alpine Slide at Action Park!

But since we're Jets fans, we are notorious gluttons for punishment. So rather than dwell on all the bad stuff … what causes for hope do you have from what you've seen this season, Bent?

New York Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said young quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg need to get all the reps they can get to continue to develop.

Though the Jets have decided to turn back to Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback for the foreseeable future, Gailey said Petty "needs all of the work he can get," according to NJ.com's Connor Hughes.

"It helps to play in games. ... The probability in games, you've got a lot better idea of what's going to happen," Gailey said. "In practice, you only have about a 75 percent probability of how they're going to be, how they're to play, and how they're going to progress."

Petty has started just one game -- a 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in Week 10 -- this season before head coach Todd Bowles opted to make Fitzpatrick, who led New York to 10 wins last season, the starter again.

Ralph Vacchiano reports from the Jets facility on the Darrelle Revis rumors of him possibly retiring after the 2016 season.

Darrelle Revis, the embattled Jets cornerback, insists that he has given no thought to retirement despite his age and his struggles this season, and that his love for the game of football is as strong as ever. In fact, in an interview with SNY.tv on Thursday, he said any questions about how much he still wants to play are "really bizarre."

That was the 31-year-old Revis' response to the latest round of criticism in what has become a miserable season for the future Hall of Famer. He has struggled on the field in a season he admits is "definitely not" up to his personal standards, and the shots he's taken in the media have been relentless at times.

The latest came in a report in the New York Daily News on Wednesday that quoted a "confidant" of the cornerback saying "If he had his way he'd be done right now. He doesn't want to play anymore."

"He's still getting the kinks out of it sometimes, but he's feeling a lot better now, so I expect to see a lot better Mo," Bowles told reporters following Wednesday's practice.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles spoke to the media following Wednesday's practice. Here is what we learned...

  • It's still uncertain whether or not injured center Nick Mangold will play on Monday night against the Colts.
  • With lack of creating turnovers, the team has been working hard in practice to get them. "We [are] trying everything we can to get them," Bowles said. "It's just not falling our way right now."
  • WR Devin Smith has returned to practice and has no restrictions on what he can do. So far, according to Bowles, Smith is almost caught up with the offense.
