Higher Expectations for Jets 00:00:47
Jamal Adams and C.J. Mosley joined Bart Scott to talk about higher expectations in 2019. For Adams, Super Bowl would be the ultimate dream.

With a rising quarterback, an elite running back, a new offensive-minded head coach, and a talented, young defense, outside expectations have risen for the Jets.

But according to Jamal Adams, inside the locker room the team is taking things one day at a time as they build their way towards what he calls the ultimate goal.

"We don't put too much pressure on ourselves," Adams said. "Obviously, we have our goals as a defense. Obviously, we have our dreams, and that ultimate dream is to get to the Super Bowl ... but at the end of the day, we're going to take it one game at a time."

Reaction to Johnson benching 00:01:59
Ray Lucas and Bart Scott react to Trumaine Johnson's benching, their take on the situation might surprise you.

No one knew why cornerback Trumaine Johnson spent roughly the first three quarters out of action until head coach Adam Gase spoke briefly after the game.

Unable to sustain drive on offense, the defense suffered for the Jets in Monday's 23-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Among the questions SNY's Ray Lucas and Bart Scott had once the final horn sounded, what was the real reason why Gase and Gang Green kept Johnson on the sidelines?

Johnson comments on benching 00:01:00
Trumaine Johnson reacts to not starting against the Browns. It was a surprising move that Gase said wasn't due to discipline reasons.

Decimated by injuries, including linebacker C.J. Mosley (strained groin) and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (sprained left ankle), the Jets trotted out a revised defense against a Browns offense littered with dangerous skill players but did not play Trumaine Johnson until the cornerback was forced into action.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. gave Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams a piece of his mind on the field and taste of his own medicine off of it on Monday night.

Williams, when asked a question about Beckham this week, started his reply with, "Odell who?"

Beckham downplayed a lot during his press conference following his team's 23-3 win against the Jets. One thing he couldn't help himself with was his thoughts on Williams.

OK, now what?

It was bad enough when the Jets learned quarterback Sam Darnold was out indefinitely with mono, but now they've lost backup quarterback Trevor Siemian, too. He suffered what looked like a nasty ankle injury in the first half of the Jets' 23-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Monday night. That forced the Jets to turn to Luke Falk, who had been promoted from the practice squad earlier in the day.

Demaryius Thomas was a surprise activated player for the Jets on Monday Night Football against the Cleveland Browns. However, his first night at MetLife Stadium as a Jet is over prematurely.

The Jets already had lost quarterback Trevor Siemian due to an ankle injury the second quarter of the game.

When the team announced the quarterback's injury designation, as his night was finished, it also indicated that the veteran wideout's night was also over due to a hamstring injury as well.

The Jets lost quarterback Trevor Siemian in the second quarter of their Monday Night Football matchup against the Cleveland Browns at MetLife Stadium due to injury.

Scrambling to his right, Siemian was hit by Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett and his ankle was caught underneath his body and folded awkwardly. The play occurred on a third-and-16 play and the hit earned Garrett a roughing the passer penalty.

Siemian was 3-for-6 passing with only three yards prior to exiting the game, which he was starting in place of quarterback Sam Darnold, who is currently sidelined while he battles mono.

Running back Le'Veon Bell says he already won in one sense, though.

Via a snippet of a conversation he had with ESPN, Bell discussed is highly-publicized hold out from a year ago with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In that regard, Bell said he did, in fact, win.

Odell Beckham Jr. is back at MetLife Stadium.

This time, however, he heads to the visiting sideline.

Just over three hours before Monday's 8:15 p.m. kickoff in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the former Giants wide receiver strolled into his home for the past five years when he arrived as a member of the Cleveland Browns for a Week 2 matchup with the New York Jets.

Is Odell right about Williams? 00:00:39
New York Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and Odell Beckham Jr. had some words this past week, we'll see what happens tonight.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

Odell Beckham Jr. made waves last week when he went public with accusations that Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams once told players to purposely injury him.

And that wasn't the first time Beckham thought Williams ordered his players to take the star receiver out.

The Beckham-Williams feud has its roots in 2014, when Beckham was a rookie with the Giants and Williams was fresh off his BountyGate suspension as the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams. In a late December game, Rams defenders appeared to target Beckham multiple times with late or questionably legal hits.

With the health of QB Sam Darnold up in the air for the next few weeks, the Jets announced Monday afternoon that they've signed Luke Falk to the active roster, and in turn, have waived S Bennett Jackson.

Falk is now set to back up Trevor Siemian tonight, as the Jets host the Browns and Odell Beckham Jr. at MetLife Stadium for Monday Night Football.

The second-year man of out Washington State performed well for the Jets during the preseason, completing 80.6 percent of his passes (29-of-36) for 230 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Sam Darnold (Vincent Carchietta)
Sam Darnold (Vincent Carchietta)

Sam Darnold will definitely be out against the Browns on Monday night, as he continues to deal with mono. But, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, he doesn't think he'll be out too long.

Sources have told Mort that Darnold is saying he's "already feeling better," and he is aiming for a Week 5 return against the Eagles following the bye week.

That's all great to hear, but that's a bold statement there considering how serious of an illness mono is. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano has two doctors telling him that Week 5 would definitely be a stretch considering the recovery Darnold has to go through. Instead, those doctors believe a Week 7 return against the Patriots is a more likely outcome.

The Jets decided not to put Sam Darnold on injured reserve because that would've required him to miss the next eight weeks and, according to Jets coach Adam Gase, the quarterback's expected absence is "not going to be that long."

But it could be close.

Though many initially assumed that, after the 22-year-old Darnold was diagnosed with mono, he would return in Week 5 -- right after the Jets bye week -- the Jets just aren't sure he'll be able to be back that quickly. The truth is the Jets don't know yet when to expect him back, multiple sources said.

Jets defensive lineman Henry Anderson was fined for a hit on Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen in his team's 17-16 season opening loss in Week 1.

He will be dinged $10,527 by the NFL, it was announced on Saturday.

Anderson had a late hit on Allen in the game. Later on it was revealed via cameras that Anderson also took a low shot on Allen, too. Having fallen to the ground, Anderson crawled to the side of Allen's legs after a pass and knocked him down.

Adam Gase 1-on-1 00:02:01
SNY's Jeane Coakley talks with Jets Head Coach Adam Gase on rallying the team after last week's loss and several injuries to key players

While the Jets technically had an extra 24 hours to get C.J. Mosley ready to return for Monday's 8:15 p.m. matchup with the Cleveland Browns after a groin injury in the past weekend's 17-16 loss against the Buffalo Bills, the clock was ticking on the linebacker's decision, which came Saturday.

After the team took Friday off, New York resumed practice Saturday and in the afternoon ruled the linebacker -- as well as defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (sprained left ankle) -- out for Monday's game.

Mosley, who sat out the week while he worked his way back, needed to get back on the field Saturday or else he would jeopardize his status for Monday.

While the Jets will head into Monday night with injury issues of their own, the Browns will also be without a key defensive player.

Browns safety Damarious Randall reported to the team facility on Saturday with a concussion and will not play on Monday night at MetLife Stadium, the team announced.

Randall, a former first round pick of the Packers in 2015, was acquired by the Browns prior to the 2018 season. He's played in 16 games for Cleveland, intercepting four passes and recovering a fumble.

Gregg Williams
Gregg Williams

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

Gregg Williams took the bait, because of course he did. That's exactly what he wanted to do. He didn't have to. He's a grown man, 61 years old, a coach with 30 years of NFL experience. He could have just let those nasty things that Odell Beckham Jr. said about him go.

But that's not Williams' style. He's a brash, harsh, tough guy who at the very least wants to project the image that he'll never back down from a fight. So when he was asked on Friday about Beckham's accusation that Williams ordered his players to intentionally injure the attention-seeking receiver two years ago, Williams began by saying this:

"Odell who?"

The Jets held their breath Wednesday when running back Le'Veon Bell left practice with an apparent shoulder injury, but they received good news Thursday after his MRI revealed he had no significant damage, as SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed.

Bell tweeted Thursday that his shoulder turned out "fine" and he was "ready to go" for Monday's 8:15 p.m. kickoff at MetLife Stadium against the Cleveland Browns, but head coach Adam Gase gave an update for good measure Friday.

Gase said that Bell was good to go and set for practice Saturday, following the Jets' Friday off, after soreness surfaced from the injury in the middle of the week.

Williams addresses OBJ comments 00:01:09
New York Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams addresses the comments receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said about his coaching methods

Odell Beckham Jr. took aim at Gregg Williams after practice Thursday when the Browns wide receiver ripped the Jets defensive coordinator.

A day later, Williams fired back.

Asked about the comments Beckham made in which the ex-Giants star claimed that Williams -- while Cleveland's defensive coordinator from 2017-18 -- told Browns players to take him out of an Aug. 21, 2017, preseason game, Williams joked before shooting those down.

Former Giants star Odell Beckham is set to make his return to MetLife Stadium on Monday night when the Browns play the Jets, and the fireworks have already started.

After practice on Thursday afternoon, Beckham was asked about Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and naturally, he did not hold back any feelings towards the coach.

"Nobody in the NFL is really out to do stuff like that, I had players on this team telling me that's what he was telling them to do," Beckham said. "Take me out of the game, and its preseason. So you just know who he is ... that's the man calling the plays."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - One of Adam Gase's top priorities in the offseason was finding an experienced quarterback to back up Sam Darnold, and the guy he wanted from the beginning was Trevor Siemian.

This is why.

"He's exactly what smart teams want in a backup quarterback," one AFC scout told SNY on Thursday night. "Experience. He's done it before and done it well. There's no learning curve. Just plug him in and go to work."

The Jets got good news on RB Le'Veon Bell on Thursday afternoon, after an MRI on his shoulder revealed no significant damage, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed.

Bell, who should be fine to play on Monday in Week 2 against the Browns, missed Thursday's practice due to a sore shoulder.

Head coach Adam Gase said at the time that he was uncertain about Bell's status for practice for the rest of the week and for Monday night's game against the Browns at MetLife Stadium.

Jets head coach Adam Gase delivered news that Sam Darnold has been diagnosed with mononucleosis, and will not only miss Monday's bout against the Browns, but they're expecting him to be out for some time.

So just how long will that be? Well, Dr. Aaron E. Glatt -- chair of medicine at South Nassau Communities Hospital -- gave his professional opinion on that matter.

"So everybody's different," Glatt told SNY on Thursday. "Individuals may do very, very well. They may feel almost right away. Others take a week or two, sometimes even longer still feeling fatigued, still feeling tired, not having their normal level of energy back to where they normally are at a baseline.

New Jets talk new roles 00:01:16
Trevor Siemian talks about stepping in as Jets starting quarterback, and Demaryius Thomas looks to show that he "still can play ball."

Six days before the Jets' Week 2 matchup with the Cleveland Browns, Trevor Siemian learned he was getting the start at quarterback.
With Sam Darnold sidelined for at least this Monday with mono, the reigns of Adam Gase's offense are now in the hands of the 27-year-old veteran.

"Coach Gase gave me a call and said they were trying to figure out what was going on with Sam but to be ready. Got the news last night," Siemian said on Thursday.

"I honestly felt for Sam. That's a tough deal, man. Just because I've seen him, since I've been here the last several months, put his heart soul and mind into this. It's been kind of rewarding for me, because I feel like I was a young player and seeing (Darnold's) progress from Year 1 to Year 2, I was excited for him and I still am."

"He's not going anywhere. He'll be back soon, but that was the first thing I thought of, feeling for Sam and hoping he makes a speedy recovery."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - When the doctors came to Jets head coach Adam Gase on Wednesday night to talk about Sam Darnold, he said he had a feeling that his quarterback had mono. Somehow he just knew in his "gut" that the news was going to be bad.

Unfortunately for Gase, he was right.

And it's likely going to get much, much worse.

Trevor Siemian (Vincent Carchietta)
Trevor Siemian (Vincent Carchietta)

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter

A lot has happened over the last seven days, but -- just as it seemed like things might finally start to settle down -- news broke that is likely to have wider-reaching consequences than everything that came before it.

Having been diagnosed with mononucleosis, Sam Darnold will miss Monday night's game and will almost certainly miss next Sunday's divisional clash with the New England Patriots. Although the bye week follows that, the possibility remains that he could end up missing more than just those two games.

This brings backup Trevor Siemian into the spotlight. Siemian, who was signed during the offseason, is now the starter with Luke Falk set to be activated from the practice squad to back him up. Both put up solid numbers in preseason, albeit with and against backups and mostly by "dinking and dunking."

Gase announces Darnold has mono 00:01:46
Adam Gase surprised everyone Thursday announcing QB Sam Darnold has mono and will miss at least Monday's game, Trevor Siemian will start.

Jets QB Sam Darnold has mononucleosis and will not play against the Browns on Monday Night Football, head coach Adam Gase revealed on Thursday. Trevor Siemian will get the start under center in his place.

Darnold was sent home from practice on Wednesday, with Gase saying it was for an illness. But, after learning about the diagnosis, Gase actually went over to Darnold's home to give him the news. He was joined by offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and associate head trainer Dave Zuffelato

And as one would expect, Darnold wasn't keen on the news.

The Jets have their fourth new kicker this season in Sam Ficken, who won a competition during a tryout earlier this week. He replaces Kaare Vedvik, who missed a 45-yard kick and an extra point in a 17-16 opening day loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

After letting Pro Bowler Jason Meyers walk after 2018, the Jets saw Chandler Catanzaro retire in the preseason, and then Taylor Bertolet and Vedvik not cut it. A less than ideal situation for Jets head coach Adam Gase, who oversaw the selection of Ficken this week.

Despite all that, Gase is taking an optimistic approach to the situation when asked about it on Wednesday.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - On his first chance to play Monday Morning Quarterback with his team, Adam Gase didn't hold anything back. His anger was evident. His words were harsh. And his finger was pointed directly at his players.

It was an unusual public display of day-after emotion, especially for anyone who lived the four years of Todd Bowles, a coach who rarely showed a public pulse. It was interpreted in some places as Gase rolling his Jets players under the proverbial bus and taking no blame for the Jets' opening-day disaster.
