Wilkerson is entering the final year of his contract and is due to earn $6.96 million in 2015. The Jets have made it clear they’d like to lock Wilkerson into a long-term deal, and with close to $50 million in cap room, they have plenty of space to work with.
However, his future with the Jets became cloudy with the selection of defensive end Leonard Williams sixth-overall in this years draft (April 30).
At least two teams approached the Jets about trading for Wilkerson, according to Adam Schefter (April 28).
“We’re not actively trying to shop Muhammad,” GM Mike Maccagnan said after selecting Williams (April 30).
In 13 games last season Wilkerson recorded six sacks and 31 tackles.
It remains unknown if Wilkerson will attend next months mandatory minicamp if the two sides are unable to reach a contract resolution.
