With final cuts days away, the Giants find themselves in a precarious position. Injuries have thrown the availability of several key players into question and providing adequate depth to remedy the situation may force the team to cut players that deserve to stay.

QB Jim Sorgi intends to return in time for the September 2nd game against New England.

Ralph Vacchiano reports that Sorgi plans to return to practice Monday, less than five days before the Giants will reduce the roster by 22 players.

Sorgi's roster spot is likely still intact, however his injury has sidelined him long enough for speculation to swirl and for Rhett Bomar to get in a full game's worth of field time.

A 7 point loss?...we'll take it. ?This was no ordinary game for the Giants. ?No the game didn't count. ?However, meaningless or not, the Giants found themselves with their back to the wall in the early month of August.

A 24-17 defeat is not exactly disappointing when you consider the circumstances.? New York played the entire game with a third string QB.? How many times have you witnessed a third string QB even play a series at the pro level, let alone an entire game?

That said, here's what we learned:

Quarterback Jim Sorgi came to the New York Giants in the off season with a unique tie to the franchise.?? Sorgi, drafted in 2004 by the Colts in the sixth round out of Wisconsin has been backing up a Manning his entire career.? It felt good to have Sorgi in Giants camp; however, after NY Giants star quarterback Eli Manning left the game in the 2nd quarter with a 3 inch laceration to the? forehead... Jim Sorgi looked uncomfortable until he found his groove with undrafted wide receiver, Victor Cruz.

It's to be expected that his timing might be off coming in cold off the sidelines, but that is no excuse for poor mechanics and bad clock management.?? Bringing in Sorgi was an easy decision for NY Giants GM Jerry Reese as the coaching staff agreed that the connection between Sorgi and the Manning brothers would breed a comfort zone.

It is going to take some time for Sorgi to learn the offense and get comfortable with his new role, but watching Sorgi throw off his back foot time and time again was unsettling during his first few series. ? But then something happened!

-Victor Cruz.  3 TD's?  Granted they came agaisnt backups or lower, but the young receiver still showed valuable ball handeling skills and at least two of his big catches came in tight coverage.  Cruz is also the first player to haul in 3 TDs in a single pre-season game since T.O. in 1998.  If Moss beats him out... well frankly it just won't happen.

- Chase Blackburn has a sprained knee.  Clearly we won't see him again before the regular season, if we see him at all.  The linebacking corps is crowded. As good as Blackburn has been for New York over the past five years, if he can't contribute for a month or two he might be headed towards the chopping block.

-Speaking of Blackburn,  Gerris Wikinson, showed signs of life.  Not good for a laid up linebacker.

-Jim Sorgi has a cannon and Rhett Bomar has wheels.  The Giants will probably be forced to cut at least one and early on it seemed that Sorgi was a fish out of water without a clipboard in his hand.  His poor play was likely a result of a struggling offensive line.  His play swiftly picked up when Cruz and Hagan took the field.  Sorgi is still the favorite to be the backup QB after showing marked improvement throughout the second half.

-DJ Ware had a decent showing against non 3rd stringers for the first time ever.  Maybe Andre Brown isn't entrenched at number 3.

-Jason Pierre-Paul seems to have come a long way from collapsing at his first pro practice back in May.  1 sack later, I am very interested to see how he factors in to the regular season attack this year.

Giants' new backup QB Jim Sorgi figures to get the lion's share of the snaps on Monday's preseason opener vs the Jets at the New Meadowlands.

Don't think for one second that Sorgi, who was an Indianapolis Colt for the past six seasons, is worried.? He is no stranger to Rex Ryan and his tactics.? It's not as if the Jets have been operating in a vacuum, either.

Jim Sorgi has plenty of experience backing up a Manning. Sorgi was Peyton Manning's backup for six seasons in Indianapolis before signing with the Giants this offseason to be Eli's backup. He spoke to the Star-Ledger about playing for the Giants and again working with a Manning. Sorgi talked about the transition from Indianapolis to New York.

"The playbook is similar in certain ways.?The terminology, the lingo is different," Sorgi said.?"That's the hardest part: trying to learn how to call everything. And trying not to revert [back to] what you did for six years.

"You can definitely get a feel that this team likes to be physical. Offensively they like to run the ball and play-action pass. And defensively they like to pound [you]. And that's a little different than what the Colts were. The Colts were a little bit more finesse with the drop-back passing game. It's a different scheme, a change for me, but I think I'm going to enjoy being in it."
