Although the Nets will be without an All-Star this season, they will still be well represented at NBA All-Star weekend in Chicago, as Spencer Dinwiddie prepares to participate in the Skills Competition, and Joe Harris gets set to defend his 3-point contest championship.

Harris, a career 42.3 percent shooter from 3-point range, is having a slight down year from beyond the arc, shooting just 40.5 percent -- he shot at a 47.4 percent clip from three last season.

Despite that slight dip, Harris is still ready to defend the title he won during last season's 3-point competition, when he narrowly defeated Stephen Curry 26-24 in the final round to claim the trophy.

With Kyrie Irving out with a knee sprain, the Nets needed someone to step up as they fight to remain seventh in the Eastern Conference. On Monday, Caris LeVert assumed that role.

Making his first appearance in the starting lineup since Nov. 10, LeVert went off for a game-high 29 points on 10-for-20 shooting, the most he's scored all season and a tie for the most he's had in his career.

"We needed it," head coach Kenny Atkinson said. "He did it on both ends. His defense was excellent and, of course, offensively. He really, really carried us."

Nearing the halfway mark of the NBA season, the Brooklyn Nets find themselves eighth in the Eastern Conference with a 17-20 record. Offense has been a major problem. Brooklyn is ranked just 24th in offensive efficiency through 37 games.

Brooklyn's shot profile is a modern NBA analytics dream. According to Basketball Reference, Brooklyn is ranked first in shots attempted around the rim (34.8 percent) and sixth in three-point attempt rate (41.7 percent). The problem is that the Nets are third worst in the league in three-point percentage at 32.9 percent and they are converting just 62.4 percent of their attempts around the rim. That is the fifth-worst mark in the association.

Having Kyrie Irving and Caris LeVert miss significant time due to injury hurt as the Nets lost two of their key ball handlers. Irving and LeVert help break down the defense and open up the three-point shots that the Nets heavily rely on in their offense.

The Brooklyn Nets fell 127-126 to the Minnesota Timberwolves in overtime of Wednesday's 2019-20 season opener at Barclays Center. >> Box Score

Six things to know from Wednesday's game...

1) Kyrie Irving's homecoming to the Nets, the team he grew up rooting for while the franchise was in New Jersey, was historic. With 50 points on 17-of-33 shooting, Irving set the Nets' -- and the NBA's -- single-game record for scoring in a player's debut. Irving added a 7-of-14 clip from three-point range, plus seven assists and eight rebounds, for the Nets' offense in what was an all-around effort. Perhaps most notable, Irving did not turn the ball over once. Despite a facial fracture that handicapped him throughout the preseason, Irving did not wear a mask as he made his season debut.

With the regular season set to start for the Nets on Wednesday night against the Timberwolves, Kyrie Irving is ready to embrace the year with his new teammates and group together there experiences on the court into a shared leadership role.

"I think that we all share a certain responsibility in the leadership here," Irving said. "I think that some of my past experiences, there could be a sense of alienation when you think about someone naming you as just the leader of the team and falling all in your court."

"I want to share those responsibilities with those guys--obviously we have different roles, that every single night there's a consistency that you have to live up to, and your game. But overall, there shouldn't be a different communication that I have with [Duzanan] Musa or Caris [LeVert] just because I am a nine-year vet, or anything like that."

The Nets saw their trip to China as a bonding experience and didn't want to discuss the off-court issues between the NBA and one of its biggest foreign markets.

"In four years here, I've never commented on a political issue or a social issue. I'm just going to continue that way," head coach Kenny Atkinson said Wednesday. "I would love to keep it to our Nets and the on-court stuff, anything you want to know about how we played, our rotations, our pick-and-roll defense, I'd be more than willing to answer that."

The Nets and Lakers were in the middle of a tense geopolitical storm during their stay in China. It started, as you know, with a tweet from Rockets general manager Daryl Morey expressing support Hong Kong demonstrators protesting a number of issues related to China.

Relatively quiet since he signed his four-year deal with the Nets in July and rehabs from an Achilles injury, Kevin Durant broke his silence Friday when he went on Chris Henderson's YouTube for a live interview.

In the 45-minute discussion with the self-proclaimed sneakerhead and game, who interviews athletes and celebrities about sneakers and videogames, Durant shed light on what he thinks of the Nets as his next chapter approaches.

Asked about Brooklyn, which will have to begin the 2019-20 season without the 10-time All-Star and four-time scoring champ, Durant was optimistic when he spoke of his new supporting cast.

Caris LeVert's extension leaves the Nets with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Jordan, Spencer Dinwiddie and LeVert all under contract through the 2020-21 season. That's a strong group to build around -- and one that doesn't even include Jarrett Allen, who can sign an extension with Brooklyn next summer.

But the Nets' core group is also an expensive one. And the LeVert extension -- which was necessary for Brooklyn -- leaves the club with a little less flexibility in future offseasons.
