This year's minicamp -- held earlier this month -- would have been defenseman Scott Mayfield's fifth since being drafted by the Islanders 34th overall in 2011. Instead, the Denver University product watched from the stands on the final day of camp, which ended July 11.

"It's good to come out here and watch everyone. Kind of see the younger group of guys," Mayfield said during a conversation with Islanders Point Blank.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The injury bug struck the Islanders in the first period of Thursday's game against the San Jose Shark.

Mikhail Grabovski left the game late in the opening period after taking a big hit up high by John Scott. Grabovski was down on the ice for several moments while an Islander trainer came on the ice to check on him. Grabovski did skate off on his own power, but did not return to the game due to an upper body injury.

John Tortorella told Ranger Rants yesterday that Scott isn't in the best shape but that he is in a tough situation joining a new team, "?He?s trying to understand our system, he?s trying to understand how we practice, all the things. Little by little, he?s getting there. It?s awful hard when you get a player at this time of the year for him to jump in and be able to do the things you want him to do. Little by little, he?s beginning to understand how we play and I think in the minutes he?s played for us, he?s done his job the way he?s supposed to."

After being surprised that he was traded from Chicago to the Rangers, John Scott told Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants that he is pretty excited about his new situation, ?I?m ecstatic, they?re a first-place team. To come to a team like this is an honor.?

Scott told Chris Botta in the NY Times that he loves being on a tough team like the Rangers and one that won't be intimidated:

?It won?t work with us. I love that Mr. Sather is adding me to a roster with guys like Brandon Prust and Mike Rupp. We are team-tough throughout the lineup. If the Bruins think they can take liberties with us, think again.?
He added in the Daily News, "I?m expected to protect my team. And that?s a job that I take pride in, and I like to do that. I don?t want people taking liberties with my teammates, and I like to do that and make sure my guys have ice to skate around (in) and are not scared out there. And I don?t think this team needs too much protection as it is. It?s a really tough team. So I can just hopefully add to it.?

In the Chicago Tribune, Chris Kuc spoke with new Ranger John Scott who said that he was surprised that he was moved yesterday, "I don?t really see myself as a deadline-deal guy you try to go out and get, but I guess I am. It?s shocking."

On his game, Scott added, "I worked hard to improve my game. The Hawks helped me with that. They put a lot of effort and time into me and made me a better hockey player.
