ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Jon Merrill put New Jersey ahead in the third period with his first goal of the season, Cory Schneider made 17 saves and the Devils beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 on Sunday night to snap a season-high three-game losing streak.
Adam Henrique scored for New Jersey 1:21 into the third period, but Minnesota's Zach Parise got his 16th goal less than 2 minutes later. That score was Parise's first against his former team.
Merrill broke the tie 6:26 into the third and Schneider made 10 saves in the final period.
Since then, the Devils have essentially drafted no impact talents. Before freaking out, let's preface with this: some draftees of the last few years were flipped for guys like Ilya Kovalchuk and Marek Zidlicky. So, give props to GM Lou Lamoriello for turning marginal talent (at best) into a Top-5 player and the puck-moving defenseman Devils fans craved for the longest time.
However, in terms of drafting players that become core pieces of the franchise, it simply hasn't been there over the last decade.?As much as everyone loves Adam Henrique, he's only showed flashes of being consistently solid. Let's not forget he's a third-round pick, so he's certainly not a sure thing to be a top-flight player.
- In the first game against his old team,?Zach Parise?had an assist and drew the penalty that led to the Wild's third goal.
To fill his spot, Jon Merrill has been called up from Albany.
As per Tom Gulliti, Merrill will wear no. 34.
Game two featured the debut of quite a few new faces for New Jersey. The Islanders jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one period, but the Devils hung tough in the 5-3 loss.

As camp begins, the team is starting to take shape. Still, many questions remain about the roster and who will be a contributor this year. Here are five of the biggest questions coming into the season.
1. Can the defense begin to rebound?

The contract doesn't begin until the 2013-14 season, which means Merrill cannot play in the NHL this year. Instead, Merrill also signed an amateur tryout contract with the Albany Devils and will join them immediately.
The 21-year old had two goals and 11 points in 21 games with Michigan this season after missing time with a fractured vertebrae in his neck, which he suffered during an exhibition game in October.
