Bullpens continue to grow into a major facet of a club's makeup. It's no longer enough to have some decent relievers and a strong closer. Rather, teams focus on building formidable backend combinations, which in some cases stretch five relievers strong.

LHP Jonathon Niese finalized a one-year minor-league deal with the New York Yankees on Sunday with hopes of making the majors at the end of camp.

Niese signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees that will pay him $1.25 million in base salary if he makes the team out of spring training with the possibility of $750,000 more in incentives, according to the New York Daily News' Mike Mazzeo. He can opt out of his contract if the Yankees do not offer him a $100,000 retention bonus five days before Opening Day, according to Mazzeo.

Manager Joe Girardi said Niese would compete for a bullpen spot, as the 30-year-old pitcher comes off a season in which he went 8-7 with a 5.50 ERA in 29 appearances (20 starts) with the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates.

"I thought it was a really good fit," Niese told Mazzeo. "I thought I had a good chance to make the ballclub, and that's my goal."

It's going to be a busy, argumentative and stressful offseason. I can see it coming a mile away. There is plenty of reason to be hopeful because of the young rotation. However, because of their injuries, and the team being home on Oct. 6, it feels like the Mets took a step in the wrong direction during 2016.

Therefore, there will be lots of pressure this winter (inside and outside the organization) to be sure they're in a much better position when they hit Port St. Lucie, Florida in four months.

Mets 2B Neil Walker said that while he's enjoyed his time playing with the Mets, he hopes to explore other options when he becomes a free agent this offseason.

"Everything is an option right now. We're looking at several different options," Walker said, according to Daily News reporter Kristie Ackert. "Like I said, this is a good fit and this looks good, but we don't know what else is out there. We don't know where teams might be coming from. The free agent market is kind of weak, especially at the infield position, so you never know what could happen."

Walker, 31, hit .282 with 23 home runs and 55 RBI in 113 games during his first season with the Mets before his season ended due to a back injury, which eventually required surgery.

Mets RHP Robert Gsellman looked good the first six innings Sunday. Granted, he was facing a Phillies lineup, which has been pretty weak this season. But, given the circumstance - making his first big-league start in New York, at Citi Field, in front of a antsy crowd, in a pennant race - I though he did well. He kept the ball down and away a lot, which is what he was known for in the minor leagues.

His bullpen has been successful this season, ranking fifth in MLB in ERA and WAR, but it has been top-heavy with Addision Reed, Jeurys Familia, and Hansel Robles each logging over 50 innings. A weak collection of middle relievers, spear-headed by the now-departed Antonio Bastardo, has resulted in more close games than there would be otherwise (though the weak offense is the main culprit) and Collins has found it difficult to give them days off when games are tight.

#1 1B Ike Davis

Why Ranked Here: I liked that Ike played everyday and had learned to turn his power into game production in his first full minor league season in 2009.

What Happened: The 23-year old beat up on AAA pitching for a week and a half while Mike Jacobs sucked it up at first base. Davis was installed as the Mets? everyday first baseman from the day of his call up on April 19.? He's been a few runs above average both at the plate and in the field, and by WAR is the fifth-most valuable Met.

Stock: I feel good about ranking Davis #1 coming into the season.? This might have been my best call.

LHP Jonathan Niese continued his strong spring this afternoon?against Florida, tossing 2.2 innings (1 ER, 5 K, 2 BB, 3 H). He threw a lot of cutters, a pitch he started working on last year while with B-Mets pitching coach Ricky Bones.

"It's a new pitch for me and I'm just trying to get consistent with it so I was throwing it a lot ... I'm just as confident throwing it as I am with the?change-up?and curve," Niese said to SNY during today's broadcast.

Meanwhile RHP Jenry Mejia continues to open eyes?every time?he has a baseball in his hands. The 20 year-old made and an electric debut, striking out four in a perfect 2.1 innings of work. His fastball registered as high as 96 mph and had phenomenal movement on his off speed pitches, drawing smiles from both Dan Warthen and Jerry Manuel in the dugout.

Left-handed starter Jonathon Niese had a solid outing yesterday in an?intrasquad?match up, striking out the side in the first inning and allowing just a walk in the second. He showed good command of his fastball with solid movement on his curve.

This week, we've been discussing Jon Niese's fastball a lot.? First, I compared Jon Niese's fastball to other successful MLB lefties and concluded that he had enough velocity to be successful.? Second, I examined the claim that Niese's fastball was "too straight" and found little merit to the claim this year.

However, our resident pitch fx Josh Smolow went through the data to differentiate between Niese's two and four-seam fastballs this year.? Remember, Josh wrote about Niese earlier this season, and discussed the development of Niese's two seamer, which he uses to induce groundballs.

So lets turn this over to Josh:
