Jonathan Goff

According to reports, former Giants MLB Jonathan Goff has agreed to terms with the Washington Redskins.

Goff, a fifth-round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, started all 16 games for the Giants in 2010 and was entrenched to do the same last year when he blew out his knee in training camp and missed the entire season. He became an unrestricted free agent last month.

The Giants chose not to pursue Goff, re-signing Chase Blackburn and trading for Keith Rivers instead. Rivers' presence moves Michael Boley to MLB, where he can continue his role as the play caller in the Giants' base defense.

Giants' free agent MLB Jonathan Goff worked out for the Miami Dolphins today. It is the first reported visit to an NFL team for Goff since he visited the Cleveland Browns two weeks ago.

[stextbox id="alert" bcolor="6a6c60" bgcolor="cfcac8"]As per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald...."The Dolphins confirmed our report from the past several days that linebackers Gary Guyton, Bryan Kehl and Quentin Groves visited on Tuesday. Also visiting: linebacker Jonathan Goff."[/stextbox]

Groves worked out for the Giants last week. Kehl was selected by the Giants in the 4th round of the 2008 NFL Draft (one round ahead of Goff) and played for the Giants from 2008-10... He was released by the Giants early in 2010 and was picked up by Steve Spagnuolo's St. Louis Rams where he played until his contract expired in February.

You thought the Giants were done with injuries, didn't you? Well, they're apparently not. Starting MLB Jonathan Goff is now gone for the year, as Rich told you below....

Now what?

The Giants are left with two rookies at MLB: Greg Jones for sure and possibly Mark Herzlich, who is listed as a SAM. We would love to see a success story come out of one of them this year, but you would be asking a rookie to call defensive signals which is not likely to happen....

Un-freaking-believable.

Jonathan Goff is out for the season with a torn ACL after colliding knee-to-knee with a teammate in practice.

I never believed in curses, but it is clear that this is the only explanation for what this team has gone through. And the season hasn't even started yet.

4. Jonathan Goff

Say what you will about the Giants needing to upgrade at linebacker, if you expected Jonathan Goff to be better than he was this season, you are clinically insane.

Goff was a fifth round pick in 2008, but missed the majority of his rookie season due to a back injury.? In 2009, his first real season in the NFL, Goff saw his first real action at middle linebacker.? When Antonio Pierce went down for the final five games of the season, Goff was thrust in to the starting role.? Learning on the job, the former Vanderbilt Commodore had some ups (8 tackles against the Cowboys, an interception against the Eagles) and some downs (0 tackles in that same game against the Eagles).

With his limited play in 2009, there was no reason for anyone to think he should take over as the Giants? full time middle linebacker.? Even Jerry Reese had his doubts: he drafted Phillip Dillard in the fourth round and signed 33 year old Keith Bulluck, a career OLB, to compete for the starting MLB job.? When the dust settled, it was Goff who won the job.

The New York Giants need a game changing, sideline to sideline, play maker at? linebacker. ? For those of you who might be thinking...Purdue, sorry, Ryan Kerrigan is not that guy.? Yes, Kerrigan is an impressive athlete(6'4 263)...and a ball player through and through.?? He has dominating power and has made his presence known in the backfield of many college teams, but he should stay at his natural position with his hand in the dirt at the next level.

For those of you who were thinking of converting the boilermakers "Most Valuable Player" on defense you might want to look at a different guy for the Giants system.? Yes, Kerrigan will be a 4-3 player in the NFL, but mostly likely at defensive end.?? After watching him at the college All-Star Skills competition I found him very stiff in the hips.? His footwork is good enough for a defensive end; however, not the Patrick Willis, Brian Urlacher, Brian Cushing, type of lateral movement the Giants so sorely need.

The first unanimous All-American at Purdue since 1980 will play in the NFL and mostly likely will be a top 20 pick in the 1st round, but he is not what the Giants need.? Kerrigan will not be a good linebacker, especially if he is asked to? cover tight ends; however, with his hand on the ground and 20 lbs of muscle, the NFL will be happy and Kerrigan will be a force to reckoned with.

Giants MLB Jonathan Goff was featured in his hometown newspaper in Salem, Massachusetts this week. He is intent on coming back a year better and a year wiser to lead the Giants defense back to the playoffs in 2011.

"I want a ring," said Goff, whose Giants went 10-6 this past year but missed the playoffs for the second straight year. "That's why we play the games. There were high points and low points this season, but overall we did have a decent year."

Some readers asked us to voice our opinion on what we thought the Giants might do in the off-season. Right now, the financial landscape and structure is status quo (and the players would like to keep it that way) but the new CBA has yet to be negotiated. What that will look like is any one's guess.

I'm figuring the owners will get a few points of the revenue pie back from the players, but they are going to pay heavily for it. The players will ask for every concession possible to offset the loss of revenue.

Unprepared, understaffed, under-pressure and uncertain this NY Giants team has what it takes.?? Now, I love a year when the NY Giants are flying below the radar.?? I love a year when the "big mouth" Jets are telling the world how great they are; however, 2010 is starting to concern the Big Blue.

Injuries - 5 players key players came into camp recovering from recent surgery and at least 10 more have been injured this camp.? The offensive line is fragmented and the 2nd team defensive backs look, well....overwhelmed!

Hello GFB community. I will be doing a weekly blog post, focusing on areas where I think the Giants could use some improvement. Expect to see me every Thursday.

For my first post I thought I would try to establish a rubric, so to speak, for my own dissatisfaction with the MLB situation.? I know it seems sometimes that I (Igs) am only seeing this thing from the ?glass half empty? perspective, but in truth there are a number of important angles that inform my reservations:

How close are the Giants?

Goff, Dillard Getting The Most Reps At MLB

Contrary to belief, there are favorites in the in race for the open MLB job.? Jonathan Goff, who finished out the season there in 2009, and fourth-round draft choice Phillip Dillard have been getting the lion's share of the reps.

Gerris Wilkinson has rarely been seen working with the first team and Bryan Kehl hasn't been seen there at all. Same goes for rookie free agents Lee Campbell and Micah Johnson.

Going back to the draft and the weeks before, it was evident that the Giants were high on someone in their building.? We can now assume that player was Goff.

Pierce-less D Gets Much Needed Facelift

It apears the Giants' coaches are reading our site.? They have been working out second-year MLB Jonathan Goff with the first team defense replacing Chase Blackburn, who took over after Antonio Pierce's neck injury.

Before the season, there was questions whether the Giants had enough speed at linebacker.? Those questions have been answered emphatically the past six games: NO!
