The Giants will be without LB Olivier Vernon (ankle), CB Eli Apple (groin), WR Cody Latimer (knee), RB Jonathan Stewart (foot), and TE Evan Engram (knee) on Sunday against the Saints.

"I'm really close, but just going to keep prepping and get ready for next week," Apple said.

CB Antonio Hamilton (groin) and WR Stacy Coley (hamstring) are questionable...

Giants LB Olivier Vernon (ankle) returned to practice Wednesday on a limited basis.

Vernon has not played yet this season, but head coach Pat Shurmur said Wednesday that he and CB Eli Apple (who remained out due to a groin injury) were "coming along."

"They're getting better," Shurmur said. "We're hopeful. They should be out there on the field. Again, we're hopeful that they'll be back. High ankle sprain and then the groin, there's not always a timeline on those.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - A few eyebrows were raised back in March when the Giants gave Jonathan Stewart a two-year, $6.9 million deal. It seemed like a lot for a 31-year-old running back on the downside of his career.

Then, the Giants went out and drafted Saquon Barkley. And then this summer, second-year pro Wayne Gallman stepped up and won over his coach. All of a sudden, Stewart seems like an expensive mentor whose job is to teach the young running backs the NFL ropes.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - There are 2 ½ weeks until the regular season opens and Odell Beckham Jr. still doesn't have his lucrative new contract. That means it's possible the Giants will soon be playing games that count with this unresolved matter hanging over their heads.

And that's a big deal, isn't it? It has the potential to be a season-crushing distraction for the Giants, right?

"No. I don't see it being a distraction at all," said Giants receiver Sterling Shepard. "I don't think half the guys even know anything's going on or anything's been said about it."

At this year's training camp, tons of hype will surround the running back position with rookie Saquon Barkley expected to make this group relevant once again. But will he get the start Week 1 in the backfield?

Former Giants offensive lineman Shaun O'Hara doesn't think New York will throw Barkley into the fire to see what he's got when the regular season kicks off. Instead, the running back that many forget is on the depth chart -- veteran Jonathan Stewart -- is O'Hara's man.

"I still think Jonathan Stewart has a lot of good football left in him. I think Jonathan Stewart will probably be the starter Week 1," O'Hara said on NFL Network's Good Morning Football. "And then you kinda work Saquon into the mix."

This is the first installment of Giants position previews for the upcoming 2018 season. This will be an in-depth look at each position heading into training camp that begins on July 25.

The Rundown

With no upgrade to the offensive line or the running back position -- with the exception of drafting Wayne Gallman out of Clemson -- it was almost expected this unit wasn't going to do much for the Giants last season.

Giants RB Jonathan Stewart has an idea of the conversations star WR Odell Beckham Jr. will have regarding his highly-anticipated contract extension with GM Dave Gettleman. He's been there before.

While playing with the Panthers under Gettleman, Stewart saw his five-year, $36.5 million contract he signed in 2012 get restructured three times (2013, 2014, 2017). And during this process, Stewart knew that it was simply business done by Gettleman to help the team.

So, Stewart's advice to Beckham is to continue working hard, and to only control the things he can control.

The Giants have waived RB Paul Perkins with a non-football injury designation, the team announced Thursday.

If Perkins clears waivers, he can be placed on IR. The 23-year-old rushed 41 times for 90 yards in 11 games last season.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: This could be a sad end to what once looked to be a promising career for Paul Perkins, a fifth-rounder the Giants took out of UCLA in 2016. When they drafted him they were convinced they had a steal. It was only a matter of time until he was going to be a dominant feature back...

With the Carolina recently signing Mike Tolbert, the Panthers now have a legitimate logjam at running back and reports are that they could be shopping Jonathan Stewart.

So, should the Giants get involved?

Well, with the Giants saying good bye to Brandon Jacobs, the team does have a need for a running back to compliment Ahmad Bradshaw, especially a strong north to south runner like Stewart. Stewart and the Giants could be the perfect marriage.

There is no doubt that the Giants will be concerned with the Panthers formidable rushing attack when they take the field for the first real game of 2010.

It wasn?t long ago, December 2008, when two of the league?s top running back stables put on a clinic in a battle for 1st seed placement in the NFC playoffs. Three of the 4 running backs featured in that Giants victory over the Panthers will be on display again tomorrow: Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams, and Brandon Jacobs.

Jacobs scored the final touchdown from 1 yard out in overtime, but the true hero of the game was former Giant Derrick Ward. Ward capped off a spectacular game with two long runs in sudden death.
