The Jets have added more quarterback depth behind Sam Darnold.

They announced Wednesday morning that they signed QB Brandon Silvers, who had recently played for the Memphis Express of the AAF before the league shut down. Silvers had 777 yards passing, four touchdowns and one interception in three starts.

Silvers was a four-year starter at Troy University, where he last played in 2017.

The Jets have found their backup quarterback as QB Trevor Siemian signed a one-year deal with the team, his agent Mike McCartney confirming via Twitter. Siemian's deal has a $2 million base salary that could reach $3 million with incentives.

With veteran QB Josh McCown still undecided as to whether he wants to play next season, the Jets brought in an experience backup for Sam Darnold now in Siemian to fill out the depth chart. Davis Webb, who was acquired off waivers when the Giants cut him last year, is also under contract for the 2019 season.

The 27-year-old wanted a change of scenery as the Vikings were interested in bringing him back for another season to sit behind Kirk Cousins. However, he is now joining Gang Green and provides the Jets with more than just a serviceable option in case something happens to Darnold.

Jets quarterback Josh McCown said in a statement via Twitter he is unsure if he will play in 2019.

"While I still have a strong desire to continue playing," his statement read, "my family dynamics at this point are such that I would like to take more time before making the commitment to play in 2019. I have spoken to the Jets to make them aware. I'm excited about spending time with my family as we process what's next."

With the exception of a couple of vague tweets heard 'round the NFL, Le'Veon Bell was one of the quietest free agents in the league on Monday. If the Jets were looking to make some noise by signing the NFL's No. 1 free agent, it looks like they're going to have to wait.

For the moment, as multiple NFL sources told SNY, the Jets are believed to be the favorite to land the 27-year-old running back. But the truth is, only Bell knows for sure for whom he will toll. He said on Twitter he had more than two teams to choose from. The Jets, 49ers, Eagles, Raiders, Dolphins and Bears had all been mentioned as possible destinations.

Vacc talks Jets "D" 00:01:10
SNY's Ralph Vacchiano shares some insights on who the Jets may be targeting in the NFL Draft to improve their pass rush

INDIANAPOLIS - Mike Maccagnan and Adam Gase set the stage for an aggressive offseason for the Jets when they met the media at the NFL scouting combine last week, in part because they have no choice. They have a depleted roster, tons of cap room, a high draft pick, and a willingness to trade.

So how will they reshape their roster? They didn't exactly lay out a blueprint. But from their press conferences and plenty of info from NFL sources, here are 10 things we learned about the Jets' plans while they were at the combine...

1. The Jets aren't trading for Antonio Brown

What went wrong for Bowles? 00:02:15
Take a look back at the Todd Bowles era as the head coach of the New York Jets. Spoiler: it wasn't great.

After 35 losses over their last 49 games dating back to the 2015 season, the Jets fired head coach Todd Bowles.

CEO Christopher Johnson announced the decision Sunday night after New York's 38-3 loss to the Patriots.

The Jets made a curious move prior to Saturday's game vs. the Houston Texans.

Davis Webb, the Jets' third-string quarterback, was active for the game, as was Josh McCown while Sam Darnold is the starter.

It is the first time this season that Webb has been active while Darnold and McCown were also active.

Though Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold practiced in full on Friday, head coach Todd Bowles did not say whether or not Darnold will start Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills.

"We'll decide that on Sunday," Bowles said, according to SNY.tv's Ralph Vacchiano. "Both he and Josh (McCown) had good weeks."

Darnold, who has practiced in full the past two days, is expected to make his return from a foot injury that has kept him out the past three games. But Bowles has played his cards close to his hand and won't name a starter until the day of the game.

The Jets are looking to avenge their embarrassing 41-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills last month, and in Jamal Adams' eyes, "It's personal.

"They came in and they whupped us," Adams continued, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "They don't like us, we don't like them, so it's going to be a tough battle."

So much went wrong for the Jets on Nov. 11 that it was fair to question of the players quit. The heat under head coach Todd Bowles' hot seat was scorching; owner Christopher Johnson did comment on Bowles' job status after the game.

Penalties hurt Jets in loss 00:01:39
The Jets looked like they were going to beat the Titans at home. Ultimately falling short as penalties riddled the team in the 26-22 loss.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

There are many things that have become trademarks of the Todd Bowles era. One big one is that the Jets simply never learned how to finish games.

And that's exactly what happened to them in Tennessee on Sunday afternoon.

They fought hard and played a gritty game all day, building a 16-point first-half lead and still leading by nine points heading into the fourth quarter. Then they melted down on both sides of the ball and lost their sixth straight game, 26-22 to the Titans.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: The Jets, at 3-8, have nothing left to play for but their future over the last five weeks of the season. And with tons of pending free agents, their future could look a lot different than their present.

While they have some important core pieces in place -- quarterback Sam Darnold, safety Jamal Adams, defensive end Leonard Williams, for example -- they are still heading into an offseason that could see yet another complete overhaul of their roster. The Jets have $100 million or so in salary cap room to spend in free agency.

They also have 23 unrestricted free agents (and two restricted free agents) of their own.

The Jets will be without QB Sam Darnold on Sunday for a third-straight game, with Josh McCown again getting the start

Jets head coach Todd Bowles had said earlier in the week that would wait until Sunday to make a decision on Darnold, who has missed the last two games due to a strained right foot injury he suffered during Week 9 against the Dolphins.

Darnold was listed as questionable on Friday's injury after being limited in practice for the third straight day.

The Jets were more competitive this week, but still fell 27-13 to the AFC East-leading New England Patriots. Let's review three of the best and worst performances from Sunday's game.

Winners

QB Josh McCown

It was far from his best game as a Jet, but McCown passed for 276 yards and a touchdown in a steady performance that at least served the purpose of getting some of the Jets' offensive weapons involved and keeping New York in the game.

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: The Jets dropped to 3-8 on the season but surprisingly hung with the Patriots into the fourth quarter on Sunday afternoon at Metlife Stadium. However, they were left to rue some costly mistakes that made all the difference in the Patriots' eventual 27-13 win.

Offensively, the Jets had more success moving the ball this week, although they only managed to find the end zone once, on Jermaine Kearse's first half touchdown reception. Stand-in quarterback Josh McCown led a two-minute drill just before halftime and Jason Myers' fifth 55-yard field goal of the season sent the teams to the locker room tied at 10-10 but New England was able to pull away in the second half.

On defense, the Jets played well in stretches, but there were still far too many breakdowns in the defensive secondary, with wide open receivers being able to exploit gaps in the Jets' coverage for several big plays. Sony Michel and James White also had big days running the football, combining for over 200 yards -- the majority of which came in the second half.

THE GAME

The Jets (3-7) vs. the New England Patriots (7-3) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

Compared to the Thanksgiving chill we've experienced around here, it'll be a beautiful day in the neighborhood on Sunday, with partly cloudy skies, light winds and temperatures in the low-to-mid 50s.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Jets are only two games back in the wild-card race, but let's be realistic: That's not happening. Not with the tough schedule they have down the stretch. What this game is all about is salvaging their pride and dignity after their humiliating, pre-bye week loss to the Buffalo Bills. That game might have just been enough to push ownership over the edge with head coach Todd Bowles, who seems more certain by the day to be fired at the end of the season. There's always time to change minds and the narrative, of course.

Jets QB Sam Darnold is officially out for Sunday's game against the Patriots.

The rookie will miss his second consecutive game continuing to recover from a strained right foot he sustained in a Week 9 loss to the Dolphins.

Josh McCown, who started in the Jets' Week 10 41-10 loss to the Bills, will get the nod under center once again.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is still uncertain for Sunday's game against the Patriots as he looks to return from a strained right foot.

Darnold dressed for practice for the second straight day but did not participate again, however he said he feels he's getting closer to returning.

"Every single day I feel like I'm progressing and I'm doing so much more in terms of learning and all that," Darnold said, according to NYJets.com's Randy Lange. "So hopefully I can do a little bit more tomorrow and see where we go from there."

The Jets head to the bye week with a 3-7 record after a humiliating 41-10 loss to the Bills. Let's review three of the best and worst performances from Sunday's game.

Losers

QB Josh McCown

In his first start since last December, McCown was disappointingly erratic. He went just 17-for-34 with two interceptions, as he had five passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. Most of his 134 yards came in garbage time, as he averaged just four yards per attempt. Moreover, the majority of those yards came after the catch as the Jets ran an uninspiring horizontal passing offense.

Jets unhappy after Bills loss 00:00:55
Todd Bowles, Jamal Adams and other Jets players voice their disappointment after their blowout loss to the Buffalo Bill

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - A week ago the Jets threw away their playoff hopes with a loss in Miami, but at least they showed some fight in that game.

This week, against the horrible Buffalo Bills, the Jets didn't show up at all.

In what has to be one of the worst losses in a franchise history filled with terrible losses, the Jets absolutely embarrassed themselves in their 41-10 loss to the Bills on Sunday. They were down 31-0 in the first half to a team that had totaled 20 points in its last three games. They were outgained 186 yards to 1 - one! - in the first quarter and 313-68 by halftime.

THE GAME

The Jets (3-6) vs. Buffalo Bills (2-7) at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

It'll be a chilly day, with temperatures topping out in the mid-40s and moderate winds. It should be sunny, though.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Jets pretty much took any real meaning out of this game by losing to the Dolphins a week ago. A win only gets them back to 4-6 heading into their bye week, and they'd still need a miracle against a tough schedule after Thanksgiving to even sniff a shot at the playoffs. So all a win does is make them feel a little happier heading into their week off. But a loss? Whoa, would that turn things in a bad way against the Jets. This is an awful Bills team that even the Jets should crush, especially with veteran Josh McCown taking over at quarterback for a suddenly shaky Sam Darnold. If they lose this game, they could be headed to a season worse than last year, and there may be nothing that could save Todd Bowles' job.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles wouldn't completely rule out rookie QB Sam Darnold against the Bills. But their latest roster move says otherwise.

The Jets will activate QB Davis Webb from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano confirmed. And while the Jets haven't officially confirmed it yet, Webb is expected to be the team's backup.

Darnold was listed as doubtful on the Jets' injury report after being diagnosed with a foot strain earlier this week. Bowles told the media on Thursday that veteran QB Josh McCown will get the start for the Jets, with Darnold not expected to be 100 percent.

Bowles talks McCown 00:00:39
Todd Bowles talks about Josh McCown starting in place of Sam Darnold this Sunday vs the Bills

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The Jets had no intentions of sitting Sam Darnold, no matter how much he's struggled over the last few weeks. They were going to let him play through his growing pains, to find his own way out, no matter what it did to their season.

Maybe that's the right way to do it. No doubt most NFL quarterbacks would argue that it is.

But given how lost he's looked on the field for the last three weeks, it couldn't hurt for Darnold to watch a little from the sidelines. So maybe this strained foot he suffered will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Rookie QB Sam Darnold has been under center for the Jets since Week 1. But that streak may be coming to an end.

Darnold was diagnosed with a strained right foot, head coach Todd Bowles said on Wednesday after practice. The 21-year-old was seen walking in street clothes with a boot on his foot, and questions immediately rose as to whether or not the team's franchise quarterback will see his first inactive game against the Bills this week.

"It's just adversity," Darnold said. "Just gotta deal with it. Get better as soon as possible, get back on the field as soon as possible."

For the second straight season, the Jets are 3-3 heading into Week 7, but this feels different.

Just ask backup quarterback Josh McCown.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Sam Darnold was not the Jets' first choice to be their new franchise quarterback, even if he turns out to be the right choice. Kirk Cousins was always Plan A.

Of course, their pursuit of the 30-year-old Cousins turned out exactly how they feared it would. They offered him a fully guaranteed, three-year, $90 million contract, and he still took less to sign with the Minnesota Vikings.

But what if Cousins had said yes?

There have been 30 starting quarterbacks that have bridged the 42-year gap between Joe Namath and Sam Darnold. The list is filled with busts, washed-up players, overrated prospects, injury-prone guys, and even a few quarterbacks that gave a reason for hope that they never quite lived up to in the end.

So it's understandable why some people are afraid. History is not on the Jets' side when it comes to their quarterback choices. And there are more than a few Jets fans out there who surely don't want to be fooled again.

But it's OK to relax. It's OK to smile. And it's OK to feel good about the direction of the franchise. Sam Darnold is the real thing...

The Jets have traded away Teddy Bridgewater, which shows their confidence in rookie QB Sam Darnold. And though it hasn't been made official yet, head coach Todd Bowles could be starting him Week 1 against the Lions on Monday NIght Football.

If that is the case, Darnold -- at the young age of 21 -- will be the youngest Week 1 starting quarterback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, according to NFL research. Darnold will pass former Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe for the record by 106 days.

Though Josh McCown -- a veteran who had a career year with the Jets last year -- is still in the quarterbacks room, the Jets seem to like what they have seen from their No. 3 overall pick. Darnold has shown results in the stat sheet as well as the intangibles like scrambling out of the pocket, making throws on the run, and staying poised in tough situations...

The Jets open the season on Monday, Sept. 10 against the Lions. Here's where things stand with the race to be the starting quarterback...

IN THE LEAD: SAM DARNOLD

The coronation feels inevitable at this point, as the 21-year-old continues to do everything a starting quarterback usually does during the preseason. His teammates won't say it, but they sure think he's going to be their starting quarterback. Everyone seems to think he's ready. He looks like he's ready. All that's missing is Todd Bowles' announcement...

Who will start for Jets Week 1? 00:01:15

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- It feels like everyone around the Jets organization knows a secret, but no one is allowed to say it. The truth is that Sam Darnold has done everything this summer that a starting quarterback normally does to get ready for Week 1, while the other two quarterbacks haven't.

So it would be a pretty big shock, and maybe a huge disappointment for Darnold, if the rookie isn't named the Jets' starting quarterback, right?

The Jets have signed QB John Wolford and waived/injured WR Lucky Whitehead, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

With the final preseason game coming this Thursday against the Eagles, it was expected that the Jets pick up another quarterback with starters likely not playing any snaps.

Wolford, a Wake Forest product, was a part of the Jets' rookie minicamp this past spring. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound signal caller threw for 8,794 yards and 59 touchdowns during his four years with the Demon Deacons.

Many Jets fan want to know what is on the minds of head coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike Maccagnan when comes to their starting quarterback.

Well, fans are going to have to wait for that decision to happen as Bowles has noted he won't be making that call until after the preseason games are over. As for Maccagnan, though, he loves what he is seeing from his No. 3 overall pick in Sam Darnold so far in camp.

Speaking on WFAN's Boomer and Gio show, Maccagnan said he was "exceptionally impressed" by how Darnold has been progressing as he gets acclimated to the NFL. He also said Darnold has an "unflappable" presence when he's running the offense.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles may know in his head who he wants starting Week 1, but he's going to wait until these final preseason games before he makes a final decision.

Bowles got to see Darnold and Bridgewater in action on Thursday, giving him more tape to watch to determine what to do with his quarterbacks room. McCown didn't see any time in the bout against the Redskins, but that was expected as the Jets look to get Darnold and Bridgewater more reps.

"I have some ideas in my head, but I'll wait till the last two preseason games," Bowles told The Post's Greg Joyce on Saturday.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles said his decision to name a starting quarterback for Week 1 is "cloudy" through two preseason games.

Between the experienced Josh McCown, newcomer Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Sam Darnold, Bowles has two more preseason games to determine what they all bring to the table.

And if it was up to former Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, he would pick Bridgewater over Darnold.

There's a long way to go in the preseason, but halfway through, one thing about the Jets quarterback situation is clear: Teddy Bridgewater looks like he gives the Jets the best chance to win.

Yet Todd Bowles can't give him the starting job.

LANDOVER, Md. - Sam Darnold got a lot of work with the Jets' first-team offense this week, and might even start their preseason game against the Redskins on Thursday night. Maybe that's just Todd Bowles' way of getting him ready.

Or maybe it's a sign that he already is.

It wasn't the biggest storyline from Sunday's Jets-Redskins joint practice, given the epic brawl that broke out involving about 30 players. But Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold saw the heaviest workload with the first-team offense.

Darnold's competition -- Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater -- obviously saw their fair share of reps. But it was Darnold who was under center most of the time, which begs the question: Will he be the starter this Thursday when the two teams face off in Week 2 of the preseason?

"It's no indication," Bowles said after the joint practice Sunday. "Just getting him caught up on some things."

Darnold makes his debut 00:04:28
Should Jets fans believe in Sam Darnold after his impressive rookie debut Friday night?

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - It would've been understandable if Jets fans wanted to be only cautiously optimistic that they had finally found their franchise quarterback. A decades-long search and far too many broken promises have left everyone with scars.

But the caution around Sam Darnold is probably gone now. He looked like a legitimate franchise quarterback on Friday night in his NFL debut.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Every moment on the field is like a dream for Teddy Bridgewater. He said "it gives me the chills" just thinking playing football again. Two years ago, the game was almost taken away from him forever, so he's grateful to be getting a second chance.

But even he doesn't know if that second chance will ultimately be with the Jets.

Currently in his 17th training camp, Jets QB Josh McCown has seen it all when it comes to quarterback battles. So, his answer to the question of why fellow quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Teddy Bridgewater getting more first-team reps isn't anything out of the ordinary.

"I'll defer to the coaches on that," McCown said after practice Monday when asked about his low rep total early on in camp. "Obviously just like we did last year, we understand the situation. This is my 17th training camp, and I've done this for a while, and we have a lot invested in the other two guys, and as far as them learning the offense and getting comfortable with things. It's good for our team for those guys to get as much work as they can. We feel really solid with our quarterback situation, and the room in general."

McCown has a large enough sample size to estimate what he is going to give the Jets. Last season, it just so happened to be a career year for the journeyman. He notched a career-high in yards (2,926), touchdowns (18), and completion percentage (67.3) in just 13 games before an injury ended his season.
