The Jets put together their most complete performance of the season in an impressive 34-21 win over the Bills on Thursday night, rushing for almost 200 yards and racking up seven sacks and three fumble recoveries in the process.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the offensive side of the ball:

Quarterbacks

With the running game working, Josh McCown didn't need to throw much this week, but he was efficient when he did. He threw just seven passes after halftime, completing five. In the first half, while the game was still in the balance, McCown gave the Jets the lead with a touchdown scramble, completing a drive he'd kept alive himself with another third-down run.

Unlike the previous week, the Jets offense looked stale in their 15-10 loss to the Bucs on Sunday.

Consistency is what the players didn't see from the unit after the game. As the Jets tried to find a rhythm, something would halt them in their tracks. Josh McCown says it's on the veterans like him because they didn't pull the team together.

"Myself and the other veterans have to pull these [young] guys along, help us find consistency and be better," McCown told Jets.com's Ethan Greenberg. "Because every unit, at some point this year, has played and shown that they can play with the best in the league. But we have to do that for four quarters week in and week out and we didn't do that today. We have to take these next two weeks to get healthy, look in the mirror and figure out ways to do that and be better, so we can make a run down the stretch."

After playing their best game of the season against the Bills last Thursday, the Jets looked lethargic in their 15-10 loss to the Bucs on Sunday.

It didn't look like the same Jets energy that ran all over MetLife Stadium a week prior. Head coach Todd Bowles noticed a lack of spirit to start the game, and it would last until the final whistle.

"You've got to show up every week in this league or you get it handed to you," Bowles told The Post's Brian Costello. "We didn't show up today."

What a waste of an opportunity.

That's the only way to describe that hideous, 15-10 loss the Jets had on Sunday to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Jets had showed so much promise in recent weeks. They were 10 days removed from their best win of the season. They were getting everyone excited as they sat on the edge of the AFC playoff picture.

Jets OC John Morton wasn't angry at his running back, Matt Forte, after he openly criticized him following the team's Week 8 loss to the Falcons.

Despite the horrific conditions, Morton called up only 21 run plays with Forte receiving only four of those carries. After the game, the veteran back publicly voiced that he didn't like Morton's game plan saying, "I don't really think we ran the ball enough with the weather being the way it was."

In his first appearance with the media since the incident, Morton didn't scold Forte for voicing his opinion. Instead, he accepts his players' suggestion in his offense.

What is the state of the Jets? 00:04:44
The Daily News Live panel reacts to Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan addressing the media and breaks down the state of the Jets.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The assumption has always been that the Jets will take a look at Christian Hackenberg in an actual game at some point this season. But it's starting to look like that assumption is wrong.

Mike Maccagnan, the Jets GM, insisted on Wednesday that there's no "prerequisite" that he has to see Hackenberg in a game before they decide whether to draft another quarterback in the 2018 draft. And a team source told SNY that there are obviously no current plans to make a quarterback switch while the Jets are in playoff contention - and that even if the Jets drop out of the race at some point it's likely that Hackenberg won't play this season at all.

A lot can change over the final seven games, of course, but the general point remains that the Jets are apparently comfortable making an evaluation of Hackenberg's potential to be their Quarterback of the Future even without ever seeing him in a game.

Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive:Josh McCown is 38 years old and was brought in to be a one-year bridge to whoever becomes the Jets quarterback of the future.

But Mike Maccagnan wouldn't rule out McCown returning as the Jets starter in 2018 at the age of 39.

What once seemed like a ridiculous notion can no longer be easily dismissed -- and it wasn't by the Jets GM in his annual midseason interview with the media. Maccagnan wouldn't commit to anything with any of the quarterbacks on his roster, but he had high praise for McCown as a player and as a person. And he definitely left the door open for a return next year.

The Jets' defense may not show it on the leaderboards, but the young corps is turning heads as it proved against the Bills they can be a problem in the league.

Looking at the stats, the Jets are currently ranked the 20th best in scoring average wih 23 points per game. But last Thursday they held Bills RB LeSean McCoy, one of the most dynamic offensive players in the league, to 25 yards on the ground in their 34-21 win.

They may not be clicking on all cylinders, and they certainly have room for improvement. However, this young group is showing glimpses of how dominate they can be in the future, and LB Demario Davis is saying the future may be coming very soon.

Jets quarterback Josh McCown threw for 140 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score in Thursday's 34-21 win over the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium.

McCown threw just six passes in the second half, as the Jets forced two of their three turnovers in the third and fourth quarters, as they combined for 194 rushing yards as a team.

A week after running the ball just 22 times in a 25-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the New York Jets totaled 194 rushing yards on 41 carries in a 34-21 win over the Buffalo Bills on Thursday at MetLife Stadium.

New York's three-headed attack of Matt Forte, Bilal Powell and Elijah McGuire combined for 181 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Josh McCown, who was 14-for-20 passing for 140 yards and a throwing touchdown, had a 10-yard scramble for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: The Jets had some constant success in the running game, ending up with 194 yards and three scores on the ground. After griping about only having four carries in the last game, Forte had fresh legs for this one, perhaps by design. He ended up with 96 yards on 18 total touches and scored twice. Many are writing him off for next season, but his salary next year is only $3 million, so if he can still produce like this, perhaps the Jets should consider retaining him.>> Read more about the rushing attack and performance of the rest of the offense in the BGA...

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: The Jets lost their third game in a row and were once again left to regret several costly mistakes which could have turned the game in their favor. With a short turnaround before the next game, the coaching staff has a challenging week ahead. Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the offensive side of the ball:

Quarterbacks

In difficult conditions, this was another solid performance by Josh McCown, who threw two touchdowns and completed a high percentage of his passes. However, his limitations - or perhaps those of the offensive personnel surrounding him - were exposed on that last drive, as the Jets needed to go 97 yards in 67 seconds, and it took them seven plays and all of that time to barely get one-third of the way there.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- In a heavy rain storm and on a windy day facing a potentially explosive opponent, the best strategy for the Jets -- really, a no-brainer of a strategy -- would've been to run the ball as often as they could.

So after a game in which the Jets passed 36 times and ran 22 and lost 25-20 to the Atlanta Falcons, it probably was no surprise that running back Matt Forte wasn't happy with offensive coordinator John Morton. Forte wanted to run more. He thinks the Jets should've run more.

If only he and his teammates had run better when they had the chance.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The idea that the Jets would've been in a playoff race was comical back in August. They may have thought they were going to be better than anyone expected, but that's because so many people expected them to finish 0-16.

The truth is, the Jets have squeezed more out of their depleted roster than anyone could have imagined. They've been competitive all season. They were over .500 at one point. Even a 3-5 mark at the halfway point even exceeds expectations.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Jets tried to see the positives through the misery of another game they let slip right out of their hands. They tried to focus on how close they're coming, how that proves they can be a dangerous team, if only they can put everything together before time runs out.

After a disappointing loss to the Dolphins in which the Jets blew a 14-point lead in the second half, Josh McCown is ready to right the ship and get the team back to .500.

McCown, who threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns, also tossed an interception in the final minute of the game to set up the Dolphins' winning field goal. The 38-year-old quarterback took the onus for the loss and vowed to get back on track in Week 8.

"It's still not where I want it to be with this group, but I think we're getting there," McCown told Newsday's Bob Glauber. "We're getting there. We've done some good things, but it's not quite where I want to be at. I expect a lot of myself, and I feel like we can definitely improve."

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - In the last two weeks the Jets lost two heartbreaking games that changed the entire tenor of their season. Imagine how different things would've been if they held on against the Patriots and Dolphins and they were 5-2 right now instead of 3-4.

Yes, it's crazy to play the what-if game with such a young team that wasn't expected to do much winning in the first place. But the reality is they were really close to making that fantasy happen. They may have shown their flaws, but they've proven they're a better team than anyone expected.

Now they have to prove they have the ability to bounce back.

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: The Jets once again gave a good account of themselves in this game, but they had too many defensive penalties and the offense dried up in the fourth quarter, enabling Miami's come-from-behind win. Despite knocking Jay Cutler out of the game, the Jets were unable to protect a 28-14 lead, the first time since 1999 they've had a two score lead in the fourth quarter and not won. We'll start today by reviewing the offensive performance...

Quarterbacks

The late interception by Josh McCown ending up costing the Jets the win, as it set up the Dolphins' game-winning field goal. The wisdom of attempting to advance the ball from close to their own goal line rather than just taking their chances in overtime can be questioned. But this was McCown's fault, as his misread the coverage under pressure. His receiver had some separation on the outside, but the slot cornerback had dropped off and stayed at home rather than tracking the slot receiver down the field as was perhaps anticipated.

New York blew a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter by giving up 17 unanswered points in Sunday's 31-28 loss to the Miami Dolphins to fall to 3-4, but the defense is confident it can go back to the team that had allowed 13.3 points per game during its three-game winning streak.

After blowing a two-touchdown lead, the Jets had the ball at their own 15-yard line with 47 seconds and three timeouts in their pocket. Jets QB Josh McCown got off to a hot start on Sunday, but couldn't hold on to the lead as the Patriots earned the win on the road.

The Jets jumped to a quick, 14-0 lead in the first half. However, the offense couldn't get anything going allowing Tom Brady to do what he does best and get the Pats the lead back.

"Obviously we broke stride there and didn't keep pace the way we'd like," McCown told Jets.com's Eric Allen. "We have some short-yardage situations that we have to find a way to convert and be better at. We weren't converting and (we were) putting our defense right back out there. You can't give Tom (Brady) that many chances."

While much of the attention from the Jets' loss to the Patriots will be focused on the controversial overturned touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Jets only have themselves to blame for giving up 24 unanswered points and letting New England back into the game.

Nevertheless, they gave a good account of themselves and, despite some glaring weaknesses, continued to prove that they're a more talented group than most people gave them credit for before the season...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The Jets sometimes seem like they've cornered the market on finding interesting new ways to lose. Five years ago, it was the infamous "Butt fumble." This time, it was a fumble that maybe, probably, never was.

But the differences between those two plays are as stark as the differences between those two teams. The "Butt fumble" was an embarrassment on Thanksgiving 2012 that turned Mark Sanchez and the Jets into a national joke. The fumble by Austin Seferian-Jenkins on Sunday -- the "What fumble," as some have named it -- wasn't funny to anyone.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- When tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins rolled into the end zone midway through the fourth quarter and the official's arms went up, the Jets were just like everyone else in the building and watching on TV: They were sure they had just scored a touchdown.

And long after their 24-17 loss to the New England Patriots, they were still shocked, confused and absolutely livid that the touchdown was overturned.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Jets gave their fans quite a thrill for much longer than anyone expected. Not only were they battling for first place in Week 6 of what was supposed to be a lost season, they were leading for most of the first half.

The fact that the bubble burst on Sunday -- perhaps with a little help from the replay officials -- and the Jets ended up losing 24-17 may feel disheartening, but if ever a team could take a moral victory out of a loss, this would be the time. Yes, this was a blown opportunity for the Jets. Yes, they could've thrust themselves into a real, live playoff chase if they could only have held on to their 14-0 lead.

Jets QB Josh McCown is not surprised at the team's 3-2 start, which has them in a three-way tie with the Patriots and Bills for first place in the AFC East.

"For us inside the building it's not surprising," McCown said on PFT Live. "We began to work back in April and May, putting our team together and working together and building our team with a goal in mind."

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: Looking at the schedule before the season began, it was never out of the question that the Jets could find themselves in this kind of position at this point, without even needing to beat anyone good...

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on Twitter: The Jets won their third consecutive game on Sunday, but this was a performance that was very rough around the edges. The Browns gained almost twice as many yards as the Jets (419 to 212) but kept shooting themselves in the foot whenever they had a chance to score.

In the second half, the Jets converted in the red zone to take the lead after a Browns turnover, before putting together a 97-yard drive for what would prove to be the clinching score.

Let's start this week by focusing on the offense:

After spending two seasons as a quarterback with the Browns, Josh McCown will make his return to Cleveland this Sunday when the Jets travel there for a Week 5 matchup.

McCown played in 13 games over two seasons with the Browns, throwing for 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Despite his best efforts, the Browns finished with four combined wins over the two years. So far this year Cleveland is winless through the first four weeks.

"Anytime you go through those types of environments, you're rebuilding and not getting the wins you would like," McCown told reporters after Wednesday's practice. "Those things are tough. But I will say the people we were around, the guys we were in the locker room with, we made the most of it and enjoyed building those relationships."

Coach Todd Bowles has stressed a "One Team, One Goal" mantra - and the players have talked about an overwhelming sense of unity since the offseason.

"I would say the chemistry is high," quarterback Josh McCown said during a conference call Monday. "I've felt that since I've been here and we've done nothing to take away from that. It's probably one of the better places, for me, that I've been in 15 years."

Winning can certainly breed that feeling, and there's a chance for more next Sunday when the Jets take on the Browns (0-4) in Cleveland.

The Jets continued to confound their critics on Sunday, eventually pulling out a win over the Jaguars in overtime after having blown a 10-point fourth quarter lead. Big plays in the running game and effective pass coverage sparked the win, which was finished off by Chandler Catanzaro's game-winning field goal in the last minute of overtime.

Let's start this week by focusing on the offense...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- They heard it, even though they pretended not to listen. They heard every demeaning word, every cry that they're tanking the season, every prediction that they were destined to go 0-16. They heard from media, from fans, from family, from friends.

"The more people talked about us, the more our family members and friends hit us up and said, 'You all are going to be trash this year. They're saying you're not going to win a game,'" Jets linebacker Jordan Jenkins said. "After a while it just gets to be where enough is enough."
