Jets QB Josh McCown threw for his first touchdowns as a Jet in the team's 45-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.

McCown was held without a passing touchdown in the season opener against the Bills, but he made up for it with two in Oakland. However, it wouldn't be enough as the Raiders racked up points in front of their hometown fans.

Bent, theJetsBlog.com Follow on TwitterOn paper, McCown had a very good game. He came away with two touchdown passes and a 113.1 quarterback rating and even contributed 31 yards on the ground. However, there were a series of mistakes that are not reflected in his passing numbers...

The Jets surprisingly hung around for the best part of three quarters, but eventually the game slipped away from them and the Raiders came away with the anticipated blowout win. Aside from a couple of ill-timed turnovers, the run defense was the biggest issue in yesterday's game.

However, we're going to break down the performances on the offensive side of the ball first...

Bryce Petty will be the New York Jets' No. 2 quarterback for the near future, head coach Todd Bowles said after Sunday's 45-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders at Oakland Coliseum.

Bowles did not initially name a backup quarterback to Josh McCown. Although Petty was listed second on the depth chart prior to the season, he was inactive for New York's Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills due to a sprained MCL.

Christian Hackenberg, the Jets' 2016 second-round pick, was listed as inactive for Sunday's game.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles and quarterback Josh McCown talk about what went wrong in the team's 45-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Marshawn Lynch ran for a touchdown in his first home game with Oakland and Derek Carr threw three TD passes to Michael Crabtree to lead the Raiders to a 45-20 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.

Cordarrelle Patterson and Jalen Richard added long touchdown runs to help put the game away and give the Raiders (2-0) wins in the opening two games of the season for the first time since their AFC championship season in 2002.

Jets QB Josh McCown couldn't get anything going on offense in his first game on Sunday against the Bills.

The Jets only tallied 12 points, and McCown didn't have a passing touchdown all game. Instead, he rushed on fourth-and-goal on a QB sneak for the score. But his overall performance wasn't enough to lead the Jets to victory.

"Not good enough, obviously," McCown told Jets.com's Ethan Greenberg about the offense's performance. "Give the circumstances in what we're trying to build, there are some things in there that we can build on. We have to be better on third down, we have to keep ourselves in manageable situations. We have to do a better job of protecting the football. We'll look at the tape to get a better assessment, but usually you come out of these things with some good and some bad. When you don't come out winning, and that's the goal, it's a disappointing thing."

The Jets' season got off to an inauspicious start with a 21-12 loss in Buffalo. Questionable coaching decisions, poor communication in the defensive backfield, an overly conservative offensive gameplan, and inconsistent tackling all contributed to the loss. However, the Jets still kept the game competitive into the fourth quarter.

Let's break down the performances on the offensive side of the ball:

Quarterbacks

From the outset, it was clear the Jets were going to operate a low-risk, short passing game. Josh McCown operated this gameplan efficiently for three quarters. He led an 11-play, 75 yard drive to bring the Jets within two points late in the third quarter. But from that point on, he threw eight passes, three of which were intercepted -- although one doesn't officially count because it was on a two-point conversion attempt. McCown completed just three of those eight passes for eight yards...

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles defended his decision to punt near midfield late in the fourth quarter in a two-possession game in Sunday's 21-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

While the Jets opted to punt on fourth-and-8 from their own 44-yard line with 4 minutes to go in a nine-point game instead of going for it, Bowles said he trusted his defense to get a quick stop so the Jets could get the ball back.

"We thought we could get field position and we had three timeouts," Bowles said, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "We thought we could stop them and get the ball back."

Instead, the Bills got a first down on their next drive, forcing the Jets to burn all three of their timeouts. Buffalo punted with 1:44 remaining, and quarterback Josh McCown threw an interception on his first pass on the ensuing drive.

It should be a beautiful, fall-ish day with lots of sun, little wind and temperatures in the mid-60s.

WHAT IT MEANS

It's a battle for first place in the AFC East! No, really! … OK, these are two rebuilding -- or possibly "tanking" -- teams, neither of which are expected to win many games this season. If they're tanking, then a loss here gets them off to a good start. If they're not, then they ought to take the wins where they can find them because neither have a lot of winnable games on their schedule this year...

Jets QB Josh McCown will earn $125,000 in Sunday's game against the Bills, and every game in which he plays 50 percent of the snaps.

The 38-year-old McCown has this incentive in his one-year, $6 million contract that is fully guaranteed. If he were to play in all 16 games, he would earn an extra $2 million on top of his deal.

There are also playoff incentives in McCown's deal. If the Jets make the playoffs, he receives $2 million as well as $1.5 million for making it to the Super Bowl and winning the Super Bowl.

A year after finishing with the sixth-worst record in the NFL, the Jets are expected to be among the league's worst teams in 2017. How bad are they supposed to be? Maybe not historically bad as some suggest, but they are still in a rebuild.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Two weeks ago, Todd Bowles went bold, promising in a radio interview that the Jets are "not going to be a terrible team." He promised a tough, scrappy team that will be competitive and "win more games than everybody ever expected."

Considering the way the Jets have systematically torn down their roster since last year, that was some really tough talk from an embattled head coach. It was an unexpected, though probably welcomed, show of brashness. But it begged the question:

While head coach Todd Bowles has not officially named a backup quarterback, Bryce Petty was listed as the Jets' No. 2 behind starter Josh McCown on the unofficial depth chart.

Petty, who suffered an MCL sprain in his knee against the Giants, said he is ready to go if called upon this year.

"[The knee] felt great, felt fantastic - which I knew," Petty told reporters Wednesday. "It was a timing thing. Last week was a little short as far as the recovery process."

The Jets' defense kept the Eagles from scoring on the final possession to secure a 16-10 win in the preseason finale on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium.

Josh McCown completed six of his eight passes, Spencer Paysinger led the Jets' defense with seven tackles, and Austin Sefarian-Jenkins had two catches and a touchdown in his final game before beginning a two-game suspension.

McCown, who threw for 57 yards, is "all good" after getting the wind knocked out of him, said head coach Todd Bowles. Bryce Petty did not play, but Christian Hackenberg completed just 10 of his 22 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Todd Bowles has already made the most important decision of the season for the Jets -- at least until he decides who his next quarterback will be. And at the moment, he's OK with going into the regular season with a starter who has thrown four passes all preseason long.

That's unconventional, to say the least. And who knows? Maybe Bowles will defy convention and risk playing McCown in the Jets' preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles. Whether he does or not, though, he's still got a bunch of other things he needs to figure out with this team before they head to Buffalo for opening day.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- There's a good chance Josh McCown won't play for the Jets on Thursday night, since teams often rest many of their starters in their preseason finale and they certainly can't afford for him to get hurt. That means it's possible he'll take the field on Sept. 10 in Buffalo having not taken a single snap in a game for 29 days.

Even for a 38-year-old, 15-year veteran, that has to be at least a little bit of a concern, right?

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- It is completely counterintuitive that the New York Jets, a team in a painfully obvious rebuilding mode, will start a 38-year-old quarterback on Week 1. Josh McCown is not part of the Jets' future. He probably won't even be on the roster next year.

But Todd Bowles still absolutely made the right decision by naming McCown his starter.

Truth is, he never really had any other viable choice.

The 2016 Cleveland Browns finished 1-15, ranking 28th in passing offense, 27th in receiving offense, and 31st in total yards allowed. Are the 2017 Jets worse?

According to ESPN's Football Power Index, the answer is yes.

"FPI believes the Jets are 7.9 points worse per game than the average NFL team, whereas the Browns were minus-7.4 last preseason, and it thinks all three parts of the Jets are a liability. The gruesome details: 5.2 points worse than average on offense, 2.1 points worse on defense and 0.6 points worse on special teams."
