The Jets were expected to be one of the worst offenses in the NFL last season - maybe one of the worst in NFL history. But under first-year offensive coordinator John Morton they did more offensively than anyone imagined.

In Bleacher Report's latest mock draft, the Jets select Wyoming QB Josh Allen with the sixth overall pick.

Standing at 6-foot-5, 233 pounds, Allen's arm strength backs up his height and weight. He is also good with his feet as his stature doesn't hinder his mobility.

Josh McCown may have had a career year with the Jets, but he isn't the long term solution, and neither is Bryce PettyChristian Hackenberg hasn't gotten a shot yet, but the Jets clearly don't see him as NFL ready. Allen could jump into the quarterback race this offseason, and come out on top ready for Week 1.

In The Post's latest mock draft, the Jets select Wyoming's Josh Allen with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Jets have yet to see Christian Hackenberg on the field, and Bryce Petty wasn't the answer after Josh McCown went down with a season-ending injury. In turn, the Jets take Allen -- a 6-foot-5, 233 pounder who can let it fly. For his size, Allen is extremely mobile as well.

Allen didn't have the best of seasons with the Cowboys as he battled injuries. He finished with just 1,812 yards, a 56.3 completion percentage, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. But in his sophomore season, Allen totaled 3,203 yards, 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Allen would be another quarterback to add to the Jets' competition this offseason. The Jets have not made it clear whether or not McCown will return for another season in Green and White, which is why Allen enters the mix to vie for the starting role.

Jets quarterback Bryce Petty said he hopes he returns to New York during the offseason despite the odds he wouldn't be the starting quarterback in 2018.

"I try not to put too much thought into things that I can't control," Petty said, according to the New York Daily News' Daniel Popper. "Hopefully it's here. I want to be here. But if it's not, that's okay too. It's a business. Everybody understands that."

Petty, who went 0-3 in the final three games of the season as Josh McCown's replacement, will be entering the final year of his four-year rookie deal and would have a cap hit of $843,425 next season.

The end-of-season press conferences earlier this week predictably contained a lot of platitudes about Christian Hackenberg. A common refrain was that the book on Hackenberg is not closed and that the team still considers him to have shown improvement toward realizing his potential.

There is understandable skepticism as to whether the Jets still believe Hackenberg has a future, with some believing the team is reluctant to admit they made a mistake when they drafted the 22-year old with the 50th overall pick two years ago. Jets fans are even more skeptical, with Hackenberg seen as an object of ridicule in some circles...

THE GAME

The Jets (5-10) against the New England Patriots (12-3) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

Miserable. … OK, it's only miserable if you hate the cold, I guess. The high temperature is expected to be 14 degrees with winds of 10-15 mph. Plus, if you go, you get to deal with miles and miles of traffic on I-95 on the way home, on New Year's Eve no less. Yay?

WHAT IT MEANS

Nothing for the Jets, unless Christian Hackenberg enters, in which case I promise I'm paying attention. I suppose it could mean something for Todd Bowles' future, but really if they haven't made up their minds by now, what are they doing? As for the Patriots, they're still fighting for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, and it's highly doubtful they're going to let the Jets stand in their way.

The Jets voted quarterback Josh McCown as the winner of the Curtis Martin Team MVP award.

"To have that voted on by your teammates is special and it means a lot because those guys mean a lot to me," McCown said, according to NYJets.com's Ethan Greenberg. "To be a part of this group has been very rewarding and it's just fun to watch a group of men come together and work hard throughout the spring to try and accomplish the goal. At the end of that, to have them vote you MVP is special and it's a reflection of everybody around me, too. I'm thankful for that."

Jets quarterback Bryce Petty said after Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers he feels frustrated he isn't able to make the plays he wants to make -- and feels capable of making -- on the field.

Petty, starting for the second straight game since Josh McCown suffered a season-ending injury, completed just 15 of 28 passes for 119 yards with no touchdowns and an interception as the Jets lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

"It's frustrating, it's really frustrating," Petty said, according to Newsday's Bob Glauber. "I think that mentally, I know exactly where I want to go with the ball, and it's just my feet are not as relaxed as my mind, if that makes sense. I know exactly where I want to go with the ball, I'm seeing things, and my feet are just a little bit rushed, so it's causing me to be a step too much or a step too late, whatever the case."

Despite the fact second-year quarterback Christian Hackenberg has still not received any first-team reps in Jets practice, his teammates said he has improved while working with the scout team.

"I can see he has a greater command than last year," offensive tackle Ben Ijalana told NJ.com's Connor Hughes. "I feel like he's improving as the weeks progress. It's hard to progress and get get better out of scout team. It requires a lot of focus. The way that it's scripted is for the other side of the ball's success. There's a lot of carryover that you can use for the starting offense and I feel he does that very well."

Despite being heavy underdogs, the Jets gave a solid account of themselves this week, exploiting some sloppy play from the Saints to make Sunday's game competitive deep into the fourth quarter. In the end, the Saints' offensive playmaking abilities were too much for the Jets to keep up with, but at least they quieted those critics who had been saying they'd get blown out again.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the offensive side of the ball...

THE GAME

The Jets (5-7) face the Denver Broncos (3-9) at Sports Authority field at Mile high in Denver, on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 4:05 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER:

December in Denver is always a little nicer than I think it's going to be. Temperatures on Sunday should be slightly over 60 with light winds and sunny skies.

WHAT IT MEANS

It means everything to the Jets. They are two games behind the Baltimore Ravens in the race for the last wild-card spot in the AFC with only four games to play, so they can't afford any slip-ups. They also have to hope for some help because just to get to the Ravens, they have to jump over the Chargers, Bills and Raiders, who are all one game ahead of the Jets. It's not going to be easy. It's probably impossible. But the Jets have no shot if they don't win all four of their remaining games.

The 38-year-old completed 26-of-36 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns against the Chiefs on Sunday. He scored the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard sneak with 2:15 left to help the Jets keep their playoff hopes alive with a 38-31 win at MetLife Stadium.

After a three-touchdown performance in a comeback victory, Jets QB Josh McCown was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Jets were down 14-0 early in the first quarter, but that didn't stop McCown from leading a comeback. Relying on his favorite targets through the air -- Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse -- McCown racked up 331 yards on 26 of 36 for a 72.2 completion percentage.

Despite throwing for a touchdown, it was McCown using his legs to pick up his other two, including the game-winner. It was his second straight week with a QBR over 100 (109.8), but McCown was only focused on how the team bounced back from the deficit after the game.

Jets QB Josh McCown had three total touchdowns, including rushing in the game winner in the team's 38-31 win over the Chiefs Sunday.

McCown went 26-for-36 for 331 yards with his arm, but it was his legs that scored two touchdowns, including the critical score with just over two minutes left in the game. Head coach Todd Bowles simply thought his quarterback played his tail off.

THE WEATHER

Wow. Mostly sunny, very little wind, temperatures in the low 50s. Happy December!

WHAT IT MEANS

A week ago, Todd Bowles said that, 'no s-t,' the Jets had to win all their remaining games to stay in the playoff hunt. After losing to the Carolina Panthers last week, this time he really means it. Actually, they'd still be alive with a loss, but only mathematically. At this point, the Jets can't afford a single misstep and they still will probably need help to get to the playoffs. Also, after five losses in the last six games, players are getting a little ornery. Bowles' job gets more difficult and maybe his job security gets more tenuous with every loss...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Imagine waking up from this nightmare of a season for the Giants just in time for Week 1 of the 2018 season. And there, just like old times, comes Eli Manning, running out of the Meadowlands tunnel.

Only this time he's wearing green.

It's crazy, right? And it probably makes no sense. It will look and feel to everyone like as much of a betrayal as if the long-time Giants quarterback signed with the Cowboys or the Eagles. Besides, a 37-year-old quarterback wouldn't exactly fit into the Jets' youth movement...

The future will have to wait. Again.

Despite another dispiriting loss, and with the playoffs just about out of reach, Jets head coach Todd Bowles has again resisted making a quarterback change. Rather than turn to 26-year-old backup Bryce Petty or 22-year-old Christian Hackenberg, Bowles said he is again sticking with his regular starter: 38-year-old Josh McCown.

The Jets are not going to make the playoffs, even if they're not ready to accept that. Their denial is understandable, though. The math says they're still in it. They're only two games back with five to go.

But they're also trending in the wrong direction - badly - having lost five of their last six games. They are 4-7, which currently seeds them 12th in the AFC. They'd have to win out and get help from the six teams in front of them. They're not good enough or lucky enough for all that...

Once again, the Jets gave a tough opponent all they could handle, but they also gave them a few gifts which proved to be the difference in another disheartening home loss. The Jets have now lost five of their last six games, with all five losses being in one-possession games.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the offensive side of the ball...

Should McCown remain at starter? 00:02:42
Jets Pre Game Live discusses the benefits of Josh McCown holding onto the Jets' starting quarterback role for the remainder of the season.

Jets QB Josh McCown may have had his best game statistically with the Green & White, but it was his fourth-quarter fumble that will be remembered in the team's 35-27 loss to the Panthers.

The Jets didn't look like they were going up against the second-best defense in the NFL as they were going shot-for-shot with the Panthers all game long. They eventually took their first lead of the game, 20-18, early in the fourth quarter, and had the field position to open it up as well. But McCown made a crucial error by trying to throw the ball as he was being sacked, and instead, fumbled near midfield.

Panthers LB Luke Kuechly would scoop it up and take it to the house to regain the lead, and the Jets wouldn't see a lead the rest of the afternoon.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson looked like a Pro Bowler with his big performance on Sunday. But he looked small when he turned to the TV cameras and started begging for votes.

It's unfortunate, but that plea stole some of the spotlight from Anderson's six-catch, 146-yard, two-touchdown performance in Sunday's 35-27 loss to the Carolina Panthers. One of his touchdown catches was a dazzling display of athleticism. The other one was a testament to his football smarts and his chemistry with quarterback Josh McCown.

But after that catch -- a 54-yarder in the third quarter -- the 24-year old found one of Fox TV's cameras and said, "How about you vote for me for the Pro Bowl man, please?"

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The simple truth is that the Jets were not ready for this. They weren't ready for the reset expectations, the competitive games or a playoff race in late December. They have proven they are far better, far more advanced than anyone expected three months ago.

But they are just not ready to win.

They'll get there (probably) but they're not there yet, as they showed again by throwing away yet another game in the fourth quarter. This time, they did it with the usual array of turnovers, drops and penalties, and they even threw in a punt return for a touchdown. In the end, they ended up losing 35-27 to the Carolina Panthers in another game they seemed poised to win.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- It's hard to call them the "same old Jets" because things aren't as bad and dysfunctional as they've been in the past. They are building something, even if the growing pains are increasingly painful.

But Sunday's loss, on the heels of a string of bad losses, sure did have the "same old" feel.

How else to explain the Jets once again holding their own against one of the better teams in the NFL only to maddeningly throw it all away in the fourth quarter, this time with their already thin playoff hopes clinging to the line? Their 35-27 home loss to the Carolina Panthers was their fifth loss in six games, and it felt like all the others. If only they hadn't made so many mind-boggling mistakes at key points late in the game.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - There was a time this summer when it seemed that the only quarterback decision Jets GM Mike Maccagnan would have to make next spring was "Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen?" The Jets were going to stink. They were going to have one of the top two picks in the draft. One of those quarterback prospects would belong to them.

Three months and four wins later, the name of the future Jets quarterback is a little hazier. Darnold and Rosen remain in play, but it may take some maneuvering for the Jets to land them. They have options on the roster and can be players in free agency, too.

So it's a wide-open competition to see who'll be the Jets starting quarterback on Opening Day of the 2018 season. Here's a look at some of the choices they're likely to have...

Jets head coach Todd Bowles recently said he won't be switching quarterbacks anytime soon, and current starter Josh McCown agrees with him.

Despite losing four of their last five games, the Jets are still in the thick of the AFC playoff race as they sit just one game back of the final Wild Card spot. McCown has been leading the Jets' offense all season, and with playoff implications still relevant, he doesn't see a reason to change now.

"I guess we're both kind of on the same page with that," McCown told NJ.com's Darryl Slater. "There wasn't a scenario where I saw it either. I think it's good to hear it, but we were already on the same page. So I don't know if that was necessarily a new thing."

The Jets put together their most complete performance of the season in an impressive 34-21 win over the Bills on Thursday night, rushing for almost 200 yards and racking up seven sacks and three fumble recoveries in the process.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the offensive side of the ball:

Quarterbacks

With the running game working, Josh McCown didn't need to throw much this week, but he was efficient when he did. He threw just seven passes after halftime, completing five. In the first half, while the game was still in the balance, McCown gave the Jets the lead with a touchdown scramble, completing a drive he'd kept alive himself with another third-down run.
