Ralph Vacchiano | Facebook | Twitter | Archive: The Jets have four quarterbacks on their roster, which seems like one too many. They cut Bryce Petty last week to clear at least a little room on their depth chart, but they still have another move to make. Or maybe two.

Whatever they end up doing, the Jets' quarterback situation isn't as clear cut as some think, from the identity of the Opening Day starter all the way down to the likely odd-man out. As Todd Bowles said last weekend, the Jets are "open to anything right now" -- especially at quarterback.

"We're going to let it all play out before make those kinds of decisions," he said.

For some draft picks, the process of becoming acclimated to a new environment is quicker given their circumstances.

Saquon Barkley of the Giants was born in Brooklyn, and didn't live far from his new home even when he was in Pennsylvania. Shaquem Griffin of the Seahawks may be making a shift from Florida to Seattle, but he has his twin brother Shaquill Griffin to guide him through the process.

Sam Darnold, on the other hand, is transitioning from sunny, laidback Los Angeles to the hustle and bustle of New York City without someone to lean on, or understanding of how this side of the states operates. In fact, he just visited the Big Apple for the first time only a few weeks ago.

Aaron Rodgers sat for three seasons behind Brett Favre, then threw for 4,000 yards as one of the NFL's best quarterbacks in his first season as a starter. Eli Manning only sat for nine games as a rookie before being handed a starting job, and he struggled for the next three years. Ben Roethlisberger ended up starting in Week 3, went 13-0 and helped the Steelers get to the AFC championship game. The next year, they won a Super Bowl, albeit through no fault of his own.

There are many ways, obviously, for the Jets to deal with a young, franchise quarterback like Sam Darnold. They all want to play from the start, of course. Meanwhile, their coaches always want them to sit and learn, if there's time. It has worked both ways, and it has failed both ways, and success isn't guaranteed no matter the plan.

The newest Jets quarterback, 2018 first-rounder Sam Darnold, toured his new home on Friday as he drank in the Jets' Florham Park facility.

Darnold joins the Jets' as their potential savior that will hopefully pull Gang Green out of the depths of "Quarterback Hell," as Giants GM Dave Gettleman would put it. But that doesn't mean he will waltz his way under center next season.

Not as long as veteran QB Josh McCown is in the quarterbacks' room.

With the Jets taking Sam Darnold at No. 3 Thursday night, teams have contacted GM Mike Maccagnan about QB Bryce Petty, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Teams contacted the Jets about the prospect of trading for Petty last season, but Maccagnan wouldn't listen. This time around, though, is different as the Jets not only have Darnold on their roster now, but with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater in their quarterbacks room, there may not be a need for Petty. Christian Hackenberg is also on the team's roster.

Petty was the Jets' fourth-round draft pick back in 2015, and has seen limited time with New York since then. In 10 career games (seven starts), Petty has thrown for 1,353 yards on 245 receptions with four touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has not panned out the Jets had hoped with a 1-6 record and 53.1 completion percentage over his young career.

Upon the Jets drafting Sam Darnold with the No. 3 pick on Thursday, Jets quarterback Josh McCown took a moment to realize how old he really is, thanks to one of his daughters.

McCown, 38, who re-signed with New York on a one-year deal in the offseason, will likely groom the 20-year-old Darnold during the former USC Trojan's rookie year. And one of his daughters helped put things into perspective.

The Jets have the guy who they hope is their Quarterback of the Future.

With the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Jets selected USC QB Sam Darnold -- who many experts had going No. 1 to the Browns.

However, he slipped down to the Jets, and they jumped on the opportunity. SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reported last week that Darnold could be in consideration if the Browns or Giants didn't take him first. The assumption by most was that the pick would be between UCLA's Josh Rosen or Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield

The Jets newest QB Teddy Bridgewater's bill of health may not be entirely 100 percent, according to his former coach in Vikings' Mike Zimmer.

New York knew what they were getting in the 25-year-old quarterback who suffered a gruesome knee injury two seasons ago that kept him out all of 2017 except for a few snaps at the end of the regular season. Bridgewater has been working, and there doesn't appear to be any setbacks.

But Zimmer warns to be cautious as his medical staff with the Vikings said there are limitations for his knee still...

In 2017, the Jets outperformed most preseason projections, many of which considered them to be the league's worst team with some even suggesting they'd be historically bad on offense, and would struggle to win a game as a result.

Although the season ended with a whimper after Josh McCown's season ending hand injury in December, the Jets still won five games. Even so, they found themselves last in the AFC East for the second straight year.

Ideally, Mike Maccagnan would prefer to build a team through the draft, to spend time developing his own players, and then paying them before they hit the open market. Spending big in free agency isn't usually the most efficient way to rebuild a program.

But the reality is the Jets have more than $90 million of space under the $177.2 million salary cap, and Maccagnan plans to spend a lot of it...

Three years ago, the Jets seemed to have the makings of the best defensive line in football. They added Leonard Williams to a line that already featured Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, and Damon Harrison. The potential seemed to be huge.

Now Wilkerson, Richardson, and Harrison are all gone, and Williams is coming off a disappointing, two-sack season. So, it makes sense that the Jets will spend a bunch of their $90 million or so of salary cap space in upgrading their defensive line

Pennington on Jets QB situation 00:00:58
Former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington says that re-signing Josh McCown and drafting a QB is the "perfect scenario."

Former Jets QB Chad Pennington said the "perfect scenario" for the team would be to re-sign free agent QB Josh McCown and select a franchise QB in the upcoming NFL Draft.

"That's a perfect scenario, in my opinion, if you have a high draft pick," Pennington told SNY at the NFL Combine. "Because you have to have a veteran who understands what he's there for. You have to have a veteran who is willing and able to sacrifice his ego and work with the young player -- and pour his experiences into that young player so he can be as good as he can be."

McCown, 38, completed 267 of 397 passes for 2,926 yards, with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13 games this past season for the Jets.

In ESPN Insider Mel Kiper's eyes, "Broadway Baker" will find his way to the Jets in his latest mock draft.

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, has seen his draft stock significantly rise all season. After leading his Sooners team to the College Footbal Playoff with gutsy drives and precision passing all season long, Kiper thinks he is the starter -- and leader -- the Jets need under center.

It is no secret the Jets wants top free-agent QB Kirk Cousins on their roster next season, and it came out Monday that they are "willing to pay whatever it takes." But what if Cousins decides to sing elsewhere? What is the Jets' next move from there?

According to SI's Peter King, the Jets should be high on bringing back Josh McCown, and drafting Heisman Trophy Award winner Baker Mayfield ahead of next season. Though the jets are expected to have a pretty healthy cap situation, McCown could come back for cheap, and Mayfield will obviously be on a rookie contract.

King doesn't deny that Cousins could certainly be a Jet, but this situation could also work with McCown mentoring Mayfield as he did Johnny Manziel back in 2014.

The Jets know they need a quarterback, and in particular, free-agent QB Kirk Cousins. That is why the team is "willing to pay whatever it takes" to employ him next season, per ESPN's Rich Cimini

New York has failed to find their franchise quarterback for years now, as fill-ins, so to speak, continue to come to town with Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg failing to show they are the guy the Jets need. Josh McCowwas the latest of those rentals, and he had a career year before an injury unfortunately ended his season.

This offseason, though, GM Mike Maccagnan has no excuse in Cimini's eyes. He currently has over $70 million in cap space, and could have more than that by the time they can grab Cousins. The Redskins can still franchise tag him, so they could use him in a trade, but that is unlikely.

When the free agency frenzy finally begins, the Jets figure to be at the center of the storm. And all eyes will be on how hard they go after the quarterback they so desperately need.

But he won't be their only option in an offseason when a surprising number of quality quarterbacks will be available. CBS Sports believe 2017 Heisman Trophy winner, QB Baker Mayfield, will find his way to the Jets in their latest mock draft.

Many mock drafts have Mayfield falling to a mid-first rounder, but Chris Trapasso has the Jets writing him name on their draft card. He led Oklahoma this season to the College Football Playoff, and he could very well be the one to lead the Jets to their first playoff trip since 2010.

"The New York Post is thrilled with this selection, as it'll provide years of fantastic cover art material," Trapasso writes. "Mayfield is a somewhat unconventional quarterback who might just help the NFL move into the future -- or, what we've seen in college for years -- on offense."

In The Post's latest mock draft, the Jets select Wyoming's Josh Allen with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Jets have yet to see Christian Hackenberg on the field, and Bryce Petty wasn't the answer after Josh McCown went down with a season-ending injury. In turn, the Jets take Allen -- a 6-foot-5, 233 pounder who can let it fly. For his size, Allen is extremely mobile as well.

Allen didn't have the best of seasons with the Cowboys as he battled injuries. He finished with just 1,812 yards, a 56.3 completion percentage, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. But in his sophomore season, Allen totaled 3,203 yards, 28 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Allen would be another quarterback to add to the Jets' competition this offseason. The Jets have not made it clear whether or not McCown will return for another season in Green and White, which is why Allen enters the mix to vie for the starting role.

Petty, who went 0-3 in the final three games of the season as Josh McCown's replacement, will be entering the final year of his four-year rookie deal and would have a cap hit of $843,425 next season.

The end-of-season press conferences earlier this week predictably contained a lot of platitudes about Christian Hackenberg. A common refrain was that the book on Hackenberg is not closed and that the team still considers him to have shown improvement toward realizing his potential.

There is understandable skepticism as to whether the Jets still believe Hackenberg has a future, with some believing the team is reluctant to admit they made a mistake when they drafted the 22-year old with the 50th overall pick two years ago. Jets fans are even more skeptical, with Hackenberg seen as an object of ridicule in some circles...

Jets head coach Todd Bowles said the team would be interested in bringing back veteran quarterback Josh McCown for the 2018 season, he told ESPN's Rich Cimini.

"Josh had a great year," Bowles said. "It would be great to have him back. It's business in this league. He has decisions to make, we have decisions to make. Hopefully, they can meet and we'll go from there."

The 38-year-old McCown went 5-8 in 13 games as the Jets' starting quarterback before he suffered a season-ending hand injury in Week 14 against the Denver Broncos.

THE GAME

The Jets (5-10) against the New England Patriots (12-3) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday, Dec. 31, at 1 p.m. ET.

THE WEATHER

Miserable. … OK, it's only miserable if you hate the cold, I guess. The high temperature is expected to be 14 degrees with winds of 10-15 mph. Plus, if you go, you get to deal with miles and miles of traffic on I-95 on the way home, on New Year's Eve no less. Yay?

WHAT IT MEANS

Nothing for the Jets, unless Christian Hackenberg enters, in which case I promise I'm paying attention. I suppose it could mean something for Todd Bowles' future, but really if they haven't made up their minds by now, what are they doing? As for the Patriots, they're still fighting for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, and it's highly doubtful they're going to let the Jets stand in their way.

The Jets voted quarterback Josh McCown as the winner of the Curtis Martin Team MVP award.

"To have that voted on by your teammates is special and it means a lot because those guys mean a lot to me," McCown said, according to NYJets.com's Ethan Greenberg. "To be a part of this group has been very rewarding and it's just fun to watch a group of men come together and work hard throughout the spring to try and accomplish the goal. At the end of that, to have them vote you MVP is special and it's a reflection of everybody around me, too. I'm thankful for that."

Jets head coach Todd Bowles reiterated on Wednesday that Bryce Petty will be the starter for their season finale against the Patriots on Sunday, but left open the possibility of Christian Hackenberg seeing action.

"We'll see," Bowles told reporters when asked if Hackenberg would play.

Hackenberg has yet to take a snap in a regular season game.

Jets quarterback Bryce Petty said after Sunday's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers he feels frustrated he isn't able to make the plays he wants to make -- and feels capable of making -- on the field.

Petty, starting for the second straight game since Josh McCown suffered a season-ending injury, completed just 15 of 28 passes for 119 yards with no touchdowns and an interception as the Jets lost for the eighth time in their last 10 games.

"It's frustrating, it's really frustrating," Petty said, according to Newsday's Bob Glauber. "I think that mentally, I know exactly where I want to go with the ball, and it's just my feet are not as relaxed as my mind, if that makes sense. I know exactly where I want to go with the ball, I'm seeing things, and my feet are just a little bit rushed, so it's causing me to be a step too much or a step too late, whatever the case."

Despite the fact second-year quarterback Christian Hackenberg has still not received any first-team reps in Jets practice, his teammates said he has improved while working with the scout team.

"I can see he has a greater command than last year," offensive tackle Ben Ijalana told NJ.com's Connor Hughes. "I feel like he's improving as the weeks progress. It's hard to progress and get get better out of scout team. It requires a lot of focus. The way that it's scripted is for the other side of the ball's success. There's a lot of carryover that you can use for the starting offense and I feel he does that very well."

Despite being heavy underdogs, the Jets gave a solid account of themselves this week, exploiting some sloppy play from the Saints to make Sunday's game competitive deep into the fourth quarter. In the end, the Saints' offensive playmaking abilities were too much for the Jets to keep up with, but at least they quieted those critics who had been saying they'd get blown out again.

Let's start this week by breaking down the performances on the offensive side of the ball...

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Josh McCown may be out for the season and unsigned for 2018, but he's not done helping the Jets young players just yet.

The 38-year-old quarterback was back on the practice field on Thursday, just two days after undergoing surgery on his broken left hand, and he will travel with the Jets to New Orleans this weekend for their game against the Saints on Sunday afternoon. There, according to Jets coach Todd Bowles, McCown will serve as a "player-coach" as quarterback Bryce Petty makes his first start of the year...

Who do the Jets turn to at QB? 00:02:20
The Daily News Live crew debates over who the Jets should start at quarterback with Josh McCown being ruled out for the rest of the season.

Jets QB Josh McCown is out for the rest of the season as he needs surgery on his broken left hand, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

McCown suffered the injury in the third quarter of Sunday's 23-0 loss to the Broncos. He walked off the field in obvious pain, and underwent X-rays during the game. He received a second opinion on the hand, and it was suggested he should get surgery to repair it.

"It just sucks," McCown said emotionally after the game.
