John Calipari has spent a lot of time this offseason taking veiled shots at coaches who, like him, are active and already in the Hall of Fame.

In early-May, the University of Kentucky head coach took what was perceived to be a shot at Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski relating to the differences in their recruiting pitches. Calipari later tried to clarify his comments.

On Tuesday, Calipari appeared on Mike Lupica's podcast, and the subject turned to NCAA violations and whether coaches should be held accountable for what happens under their watch. Calipari made sure to get a dig in on Louisville's Rick Pitino, and North Carolina's Roy Williams.

Louisville will play Kentucky at the KFC Yum! Center on Dec. 21 and against Indiana on New Year's Eve, Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino told reporters on Tuesday afternoon as part of his first media availability since the end of last season.

Louisville-Kentucky, which is generally on the first Saturday after Christmas, was moved up to a Wednesday next season because that is what ESPN wanted, Louisville spokesman Kenny Klein said during Pitino's presser. The network giant owns the television rights to the game.

"They'll still get 5,000 or 6,000 of their fans somehow buying their places," Pitino said jokingly of Kentucky fans. "No matter what money, you can't keep them out."

The University of Kentucky is losing another underclassman to the NBA Draft.

Marcus Lee, a 6-foot-9 junior forward who saw steady rotation minutes for the first time last season, told ESPN's Jeff Goodman that he is leaving Lexington for the NBA. Lee will not hire an agent, but he indicated he does not plan to return for his senior season.

"I haven't hired an agent," Lee told Goodman. "Because I want to keep my eligibility just in case I decide to come back, but my plan is to go to the NBA. That's the only goal."

NEW YORK - The future of Canadian basketball was on display in New York City over the weekend.

On Friday afternoon, R.J. Barrett was named MVP of the International Game at the Jordan Brand Classic, which also featured countryman Andrew Nembhard. Barrett is a freshman at Montverde (FL) Academy, where he is expected to be joined in the fall by Nembhard. The 6-foot-2 guard is currently enrolled at Vaughan Secondary School in Ontario.

Saturday morning saw Simi Shittu take over the Canadian spotlight. A teammate of Barrett at Montverde, the 6-foot-9 class of 2018 power forward made his 17-under debut on the Nike EYBL circuit at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal for CIA Bounce, finishing with 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting in a 76-74 loss to Team Griffin.

NEW YORK - Friday night's Jordan Brand Classic marked the final high school event for Jayson Tatum, Harry Giles and the rest of the class of 2016.

Soon, those kids will be off to college and before you know it, many will declare for the 2017 NBA Draft. Of those kids, a select few will be taken in the Lottery and be off to some losing franchise that needs their help.

Should those Lottery teams be tanking to get Tatum, Giles and the rest? That will be up for debate, but for now, here are a few tanking slogans me and Adam Zagoria came up with for the class of 2016. We always welcome new submissions at @Joshua_Newman and @AdamZagoria.

NEW YORK - Marvin Bagley III showing up at the Nike EYBL session in Brooklyn on Saturday morning normally wouldn't be a big deal, but the last few months haven't been normal for the top-ranked player in the Class of 2018.

As a sophomore last season, the 6-foot-11 Bagley left Hillcrest Prep in November, enrolled at Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon in January, was ruled ineligible to play after the state determined the transfer was athletically motivated, then lost the appeal. In the end, Bagley was left without a season, making his playing for Phoenix Phamily against RM5 on Saturday significant.

"That was the hardest time of my life, not being able to play, sitting on the bench and watching," Bagley said at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook. "I love the game, and I obviously want to play and do things on the court. During that process, I was just staying positive.

NEW YORK -- While the coaching and roster situations at UNLV remain unresolved, one former Runnin' Rebels commit is moving forward.

St. Thomas More's Christian Vital, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard from Queens Village, has cut his list to three schools, Louisville, UConn and Iowa.

A source told SNY.tv that Vital will take official visits to the Huskies on Monday and the Cardinals on Friday. Those will be his third and fourth officials, respectively, after visiting UNLV and Dayton earlier in the recruiting process.

A year ago, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski was trying to get Derryck Thornton to reclassify from 2016 to 2015, and run the point in Durham.

Thornton wound up reclassifying and playing his freshman year for the Blue Devils, but now, he is on the open market.

Duke announced Sunday that Thornton will transfer after one season at Duke in which he averaged 7.1 points and 2.5 assists over 36 games.

The Rio Olympics are still four months away, but one big non-Team USA name is already out of the mix. ESPN's Chris Broussard tweeted on Friday afternoon that Ben Simmons will not play for the Australian national team this summer, instead opting to focus on NBA activities, according to his agent, Rich Paul.

"I think it's obviously a blow," Australian William McDowell-White, a 6-foot-5 guard considering Texas A&M, Arizona State, and Fresno State, told SNY.tv at the Hoop Summit. "He's one of the best in the world. Definitely a top 3 pick in the draft and now not going to the Olympics. In the long run he will be there so hopefully it will work out for the best."

Australia, a perennial Olympic qualifier, secured its spot in Rio when it won the FIBA Oceania Championship last August. Australia is generally stocked with NBA talent as Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova figure to be in the mix.

Nine of the projected top-10 picks in the June 23 NBA Draft are American college players. The tenth, Dragan Bender, made his intentions known on Wednesday morning.

ESPN's Fran Fraschilla reported on Wednesday that the 7-foot-1, 18-year-old Croatian has declared for the NBA Draft, according to his NBA agent, Doug Neustadt.

Bender, the projected No. 3 pick, according to DraftExpress, declaring for the draft comes as no surprise. He has played professionally since he was 15, and spent this season with Euroleague power Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Arizona State's apparent loss is going to be some NBA team's gain come the June 23 NBA Draft.

On Sunday evening, 7-foot Sudanese big man (by way of Australia) Thon Maker announced his intentions to declare for the NBA Draft, assuming the league rules him draft-eligible. Maker is 19 and reportedly graduated from high school last June. Draft-eligible players need to be 19 and one year removed from high school graduation. Maker is spending a post-graduate year at Athlete Institute.

Maker made this announcement despite the fact that his guardian, Ed Smith, had repeatedly told SNY.tv and other media outlets over the past several years that Maker planned to go to college.

NEW YORK - Kris Dunn's Providence College career is rapidly coming to an end, which surely pleases the Big East's head coaches.

Just ask Jay Wright.

"We're very happy about that," Villanova's head coach said with a smile after the Wildcats defeated the Friars, 76-68, on Friday evening in a Big East Tournament semifinal at Madison Square Garden.

NEW YORK - At some point during Providence's 74-60 win over Butler Thursday afternoon in a Big East Tournament quarterfinal, Kris Dunn spoke up in a timeout huddle and asked where the Friars could throw Ben Bentil the ball next.

The way Ed Cooley told the story, the Friars coach didn't have much of an answer, so Dunn said just give it to Bentil, and the 6-foot-9 sophomore power forward would figure it out.

Dunn's plan worked out, because Bentil was unconscious Thursday afternoon, scoring 23 of his game-high 38 points in a variety of ways to lead Providence to victory. The 38 points are tied for the second-most in a Big East Tournament game.

NEW YORK - Villanova University could advance to the Final Four without ever getting on an airplane.

Should the Wildcats win the Big East Tournament on Saturday, it would likely be the No. 1 seed in the East Region, playing two games at Barclays Center in Brooklyn before heading to the East Regional, which is coincidentally being played at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

Thursday afternoon's 81-67 Big East Tournament quarterfinal win over Georgetown was another step towards securing that No. 1 seed on Selection Sunday, but the way coach Jay Wright tells it, his team isn't looking ahead to the NCAA Tournament, or even to Sunday.

NEW YORK ? A 25-game sample with an entirely new roster is not enough to say whether or not the Nets' season is heading towards the abyss, but this latest 10-game stretch isn't likely to inspire anyone.

On Wednesday night, Carmelo Anthony had a triumphant return, Tyson Chandler put on a one-man dunk fest, the Nets interior defense was largely nonexistent and in front of a pro-Knicks crowd at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks downed the Nets, 100-86 and took a 2-1 lead in the season series.

For the Nets, this will be the third game of a four game homestand. And as the team looks toward its battle with the New York Knicks on Dec. 11, its hoping to build some momentum going into that game.

Deron Williams has had a tough 16 games this year and is playing through a plethora of injuries right now but he won't use them as am excuse for his poor play.

Poor play for Williams is still above average and All-star quality for most and anyone who watches him play knows he runs the Brooklyn Nets and even with his poor shooting he is leading in many ways that help the team win.

One thing you love about superstars is that they are never satisfied with how they are playing and Williams is one of those superstars.

The Brooklyn Nets went into Miami last night with two things in mind, first exact some revenge from a previous blowout to the Heat, and secondly to show the Heat that they will be a team to be dealt with come playoff time.

The Nets played good basketball in the first half, but in the the second half, the ball movement was not as good and the Heat eventually put the upstart Nets away as the Nets could not hit a single shot in the fourth quarter.

Even John Schuhmann noticed during the first half...

In case you missed it, during Wednesday night's battle up in Boston against the Celtics, with 29.5 seconds remaining in the first half and the Nets leading the Celtics by a score of 51-35, Kris Humphries fouled Kevin Garnett. Humphries made slight contact with Garnett's face and Garnett fell to the hardwood.

Rajon Rondo took exception and attacked Kris Humphries. The skirmish ensued which resulted in three ejections. Humphries and Rondo were both tossed for their role in the brawl and Gerald Wallace and Kevin Garnett were each given technical fouls.

Unfortunately for the Nets, Gerald Wallace picked up a technical foul earlier in the game for arguing a non-call and picked up his second technical during the skirmish. Both he and Humphries were ejected for the Nets. For the Celtics, Rondo was tossed and Garnett was called for a technical foul.

NEW YORK ? Despite the fact that the NBA has opted to eliminate the center position from it's All-Star ballot, Tyson Chandler and Brook Lopez showed the NBA that there are still at least two true 7-foot centers patrolling the paint in the Eastern conference.

On Monday evening at Barclays Center, Chandler and Lopez were just that as the Brooklyn Nets defeated the New York Knicks, 96-89, in a game that needed overtime to be decided.
