In the ninth inning last night, with the Mets down 4-1, I tucked my phone in my pocket and headed to the grocery store to pick up some breakfast essentials (granola, Honey Nut Cheerios, bananas, and almond milk) and ice cream. I saw Josh Satin's game winner just after scooping up bananas. That's Satin pictured at right as a Savannah Sand Gnat in 2009.

The Mets put together a remarkable comeback by as anonymous a group of major leaguers as possible.

Eight Mets batted in the team's 9th inning. As a group, these eight had a combined 4.9 fWAR in 2013 and 2.5 fWAR for their careers. Six of the eight Mets who batted in the frame had fewer than 385 career plate appearances. The only ones who had more than 400, and both have more than 1,111, are Lucas Duda and Omar Quintanilla, who both have negative career fWAR totals. Six of the eight had a career fWAR total at or below 0.5.

Rob Brender, a contributor to MetsMinorLeagueBlog.com, spoke with Las Vegas 51s 1b Josh Satin about his early-season success and what he needs to work on to get back to the major leagues.

Rob Brender: You're having a great season so far, batting .346, which is second on the team to Andrew Brown (.357 BA). You must feel pretty good about the way you're swinging the bat?

Josh Satin: ?Yeah, I changed a few thing up last year to make myself feel more consistent. I was a little too hot and cold last year and even previous years. I like where I'm at right now. I'm still working on a few things but I like where my swing is right now.

The Zack Wheeler show made its second stop of the 2013 season in Fresno on Tuesday. The results: 5.1 IP, 8 H 4 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K. Wheeler threw 68% of his pitches (62 of 93) for strikes. The 22 year old has now walked six batters in 8.2 innings this year a rate of 14%.

For some reason, despite installing the new Flash player, my computer was not cooperating last night, and I could not pull up the video feed of Wheeler's start and the 51s. Oh well. Marc Carig in Newsday points out that five of the eight hits Wheeler allowed came on two strike counts. Carig reports that this was "an indication of the pitcher's difficulties in putting away opposing hitters. He could also blame his lack of fastball command, which was enough to get him in trouble despite secondary offerings that were mostly sharp."

Well, so much for all of that. David Wright will play for the Mets Saturday in Philadelphia. While the Mets were deciding what to do with Wright, INF Josh Satin was placed on the team's Taxi Squad. The Bisons' press release explains, "Beginning in 2012, Major League teams can place minor league players on a 24-hour taxi squad for potential promotion. This allows other moves to be made so that minor league teams can remain at full strength for their games."? So the Bisons added Jean Luc Blacquiere to the team's active roster.

In related news, 3B Zach Lutz doubled to extend his hitting streak to nine straight games for the Buffalo Bisons.

The B-Mets lost 5-3 when the bullpen gave up three runs on five walks in four innings. Juan Lagares picked up three hits.

We've gone through catcher, first base, second base and shortstop, so lets slide over to third base to finish up the infielders in the Mets minor league system.

At the big league level, even coming off the worst season of his professional career, the Mets are set with David Wright. ?I am willing to bet a full paycheck (of mine, not Wright's) that Wright, who from 2006-2008, was one of the very best players in baseball, will be the Mets third baseman to begin 2012. ?I believe that he will Met for Opening Day 2013, too, but after that, it's unclear whether he and the Mets will be right for each other. ?Moving Citi Field's walls in will help him, although by how much is difficult to say. ?For the Mets to be contenders in 2012, Wright would need to turn back the clock four years,?shucking?aside the concussion related problems, and yes, more recently, his broken back.

Secure in the knowledge that thirdbase is occupied, at least for the next year, and likely two, lets take a look at guys who played third base in the minors.

Our season review shifts to second base, the most interesting of the three positions we've covered so far.

At the big league level, Mets' keystoners put together a .663 OPS, 20th-best in all of Major League baseball. ?However, that number is dragged down by 39 plate appearances from Brad Emaus (.147/.256/.147 - .403 OPS) and 35 PA from Willie Harris (.619 OPS). The Mets of course began the season with Emaus playing nearly every day, but after that brief experiment turned sour, went with the sweeter flavors of Daniel Murphy, Ruben Tejada and Justin Turner. ?If one includes only the contributions of Murphy, Tejada and Turner, the Mets' secondbase OPS rises to .688, which would have been good enough for 15th in baseball.

Second base does not appear to be an area of immediate need with some depth, and offensive and defensive minded options already lined up for 2012. ?If the Mets re-sign Jose Reyes, and if Daniel Murphy is healthy, those three players will again compete for reps with Murphy offering the most offense and Tejada the best defense.

Sunday hurt. ?The Mets lost Daniel Murphy for the season with an MCL tear and Jose Reyes with a "minor" left hamstring pull.

Ruben Tejada will be coming back from Buffalo to play short in Reyes' absence. ?He's the only choice as the only player who is on the 40-man roster who can handle shortstop every day in the majors. ?For what it's worth, Tejada has really struggled at the plate in the 15 games since returning to Buffalo in July going .193/.254/.211 with one extra-base hit. ?On the plus side, it's only 15 games, so in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter.

  • Rounding out the rest of the B-Mets rotation behind Stinson will be Mark Cohoon, Brad Holt, Robert Carson, and Brandon Moore.
  • B-Mets manager Wally Backman says Eric Campbell will hit third and Josh Satin will play second base and bat fourth.
  • Jeurys Familia apparently will be headed back to St. Lucie (A+), instead of moving up to Binghamton.
  • With news that Satin will be the B-Mets starting second baseman, it reveals that Reese Havens, who would be slated to Binghamton, is not healthy enough to start the season.

The Arizona Fall League finished up its season over the weekend so it's time to examine what happened out in the desert for Mets farmhands.

Keep the League environment in mind. This is an offensive friendly league where the ball carries well, and the infields are hard and fast.? The AFL hit .283/.357/.431 and scored 12 runs per game in 2010.? By contrast, the National League hit .255/.324/.399 and scored 4.3 runs per game.? The AFL had a .330 BABIP, the NL .299.

The level of play in the AFL is inconsistent: there are guys who will play in the big leagues, and be impact players in short order, and there are guys who will be below average players in AA.

So I've slacked really hard on my position-by-position review of the Mets farm system.? Well, that and the team went out and hired a new General Manager and reshaped the entire front office, which is kind of a big deal.? I'm using these to start lining up my thinking for my overall rankings.? I want to finish the infield with shortstops and third baseman this week and finish the series the week after.

So, today we move on to second base.? Second base was a black hole for the Mets in 2010. By Fangraphs' WAR, the team's -0.4 WAR was the second-worst in all of baseball, ahead of only the Cleveland Indians.? The Mets' keystoners combined on a .269 wOBA, making their offensive contribution dead last in all of baseball. ? Since the Mets derived so little value from secondbase in 2010, it should be the easiest place to improve in 2011.

Is Ruben Tejada, who turned 21 four days before Halloween, the solution?? In 2010, while hitting .213/.305/.282, he was certainly part of the problem.? Did you realize that he hit .296/.377/.352 against lefthanders in 61 PA and an anemic .185/.282/.259 against righthanders in 194 PA?? In 2009, his OPS was 69 points better against lefties than righties in AA and in AAA it rose to 80 points before it exploded in the big leagues.? Also, while many Mets fans had understandably tuned out in September, Tejada hit .281/.354/.439 while playing everyday for the first time.? His BABIP was a healthy .321 and while his line drive rate nearly matched his other full big league months, his flyball rate of 53.8% was his highest of any major league month, while his ground ball rate of 27% was below 39% for the first time in a MLB month.? Is this all small sample size noise, or did Tejada really make an aggressive adjustment in September that helped him hit the ball in the air more?? Are more flyballs even desirable for a hitter like Tejada?

This week's mailbag focuses on the secondbase position in the Mets system at the A-ball level.? I run mailbags pretty much whenever I feel like it, but at a minimum, I will aim for at least once weekly this season.? As always, you can use the comments section for questions, or email me directly.? I prefer to use the comment section for quicker responses.....

A few points before we get started about secondbase.? First, secondbase is kind of the hybrid position.? Guys who play second usually end up there for one of the following reasons: they lack the overall athleticism (hands and feet) for SS, they don't have the arm for either position on the left side of the diamond, or they don't have the power to profile as the typical 3B.? While it's easy to write about what secondbasemen are not, they also have to cover a fair amount of range on the infield, possess sure hands and the toughness to hang in at the bag on doubleplays.? Secondly, whereas minor league shortstops who don't become starters can find a home as a 2B or utility player, the same is not the case for 2B who usually lack the versatility to handle other positions capably.
