Mets reliever Drew Smith, who seemed on track to be in the Opening Day bullpen, needs Tommy John surgery, manager Mickey Callaway said Monday.

Smith, who had been sent back to New York to be evaluated by team doctors, is out for the season.

The 25-year-old Smith had been solid so far in Spring Training, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings while walking three and striking out four.

Aside from a few nifty quips by Bryce Harper's agent, there was little real action on baseball's two biggest free agents at this week's Winter Meetings. Harper and Scott Boras sat down with a few clubs and Manny Machado has meet-and-greets scheduled in the coming days, but neither player seems close to a resolution.

Instead, the best intel to come out of Las Vegas might have been about the developing bullpen market. Or further confirmation that shopping for a top-end catcher, by trade or free agency, will be pricey.

That affects both the Yankees and Mets, who are searching for upgrades. Here's a look at the market following the week in Vegas.

The Yankees are interested in acquiring left-handed reliever Justin Wilson, according to the Detroit Free Press' Anthony Fenech, however the Tigers' asking price is "very high," according to the New York Post's George A. King III

The 29-year-old Wilson, who played with the Yankees in 2015, has 12 saves, 55 strikeouts and a 2.75 ERA in 41 appearances this season. He had a 3.10 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 61 innings in 2015, but was traded that offseason to Detroit for pitchers Chad Green and Luis Cessa.

Fenech reports a potential trade for Wilson would be comparable to what the Pirates received from the Nationals for Mark Melancon last year. The Tampa Bay Rays, who acquired Lucas Duda from the Mets on Thursday, are also interested in Wilson, according to King.

Even after acquiring three players from the White Sox earlier in July, GM Brian Cashman said the Yankees would remain "careful buyers" leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

The New York Yankees left Nashville improved in two areas and depleted in another after making two trades, neither of which involved their most-rumored players Brett Gardner and Andrew Miller. The Winter Meetings can be considered a success for the Yankees, yet the team has plenty of business to attend to over the rest of the offseason.

The acquisition of three-time All-Star Starlin Castro stuck to the roster construction plan and put to rest the notion that the Yankees would enter spring training with a platoon at second base. Castro immediately made the infield better, but the deal put a dent in the Yankees pitching staff as they lost versatile right-hander Adam Warren.

The second trade further diminished the Yankees bullpen as they shipped lefty Justin Wilson to the Detroit Tigers for two high-minors starters Luis Cessa and Chad Green. The Yankees were short of depth arms in the minor league system which was mostly solved with a singular trade.

The Yankees have traded LH reliever Justin Wilson to the Tigers, the team announced.

The trade will net the Yankees minor league RHP's Luis Cessa and Chad Green.

Speaking after the trade was finalized, Yankes GM Brian Cashman said the motivation was to secure two pitchers with a combined 12 years of team control.

The Yankees have seven players eligible for arbitration this offseason. They must decide to tender or non-tender their contracts.

Those seven arbitration-eligible players are 2B/OF Dustin Ackley, RHP Nate Eovaldi, SS Didi Gregorius, RHP Ivan Nova, RHP Michael Pineda, RHP Adam Warren and LHP Justin Wilson.

MLB teams must decide by midnight Wednesday whether to tender contracts to their players under team control.
