EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The good news is the Jets really have no choice but to play most of their starters in their preseason opener. Or maybe that's the bad news given the low expectations for this team.

But Jets GM Mike Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles have promised competition all summer long for almost every job on the roster, and the competition begins for real against the Tennessee Titans at the Meadowlands on Saturday night. Not all jobs are up for grabs, of course, but quite a few are.

Here's an inside look at some of the battles and 10 intriguing players to watch:

The word that defined the Jets during the offseason was "rebuilding" - unless, of course, you were Jets GM Mike Maccagnan. To him, it was all about "competition". And with a roster in flux, he certainly has created a lot of that.

Whether that's a good thing remains to be seen, and depends on the talent he has assembled. He will have plenty of training camp position battles to watch, though.

Here's a quick look at the Top 5..

Fourth round pick Juston Burris has received plenty of buzz this offseason. He's been receiving lots of first-team reps and is reportedly in the mix to start alongside Morris Claiborne. However, what does his rookie season tell us about his chances and where he needs to develop to increase his role?

Preseason Stats: Four games, one start, five tackles, seven passes defensed, one interception

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

Each week, SNY will put a current player, a position, or perhaps a draft or free agent target of the Jets in the spotlight as part of our regular offseason coverage. Last week we took a look at Jay Cutler, the Chicago Bears quarterback who might hit the open market in the coming weeks. This week we turn inward and look at a proud Jet who is at the center of one of the team's biggest offseason decisions:

CB Darrelle Revis.

After a miserable season in which he was a shell of his former self it seems like a pretty simple decision for the Jets to let Darrelle Revis go -- especially since he's due $15 million in salary and bonuses in 2017 and his cap number is $15.3 million...

The Jets have hired defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson, the team announced Wednesday.

Wilson, 34, was the Rams' DBs coach this past season.

Ralph Vacchiano, SNY:

Position coaches often fly under the radar, but don't ignore the impact of this one because Dennard Wilson has a big job ahead of him. He has to rebuild a Jets secondary that was a mess last season, and he'll have to do it either without Darrelle Revis or with Revis trying to transition from cornerback to safety.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said he was disappointed with the team's 5-11 finish this season, and wouldn't put a timetable on when they would be a perennial contender.

"We're obviously not happy with our record. But I do think we made some progress [with the youth]," Maccagnan told reporters while alluding to players such as OL Brandon Shell and CB Juston Burris. "We have some pieces we feel good about."

Maccagnan said he felt comfortable signing Ryan Fitzpatrick this past offseason, noting that all options -- internal and external -- will be on the table for 2017 at quarterback.

Robby Anderson is a low-key, soft-spoken guy who would rather make noise with his play than his mouth.

Well, the rookie wide receiver has been pretty loud on the field lately.

Anderson set career highs with six catches for 99 yards in the Jets' 23-17 overtime win at San Francisco last Sunday. In the last four games, he leads New York with 263 yards receiving on 15 catches while becoming a key part of the Jets' offense.

"I mean, winning was the most fun part," Anderson said after practice Tuesday. "But it's been a lot more fun being involved in the offense more."

By the end of the game, Patriots fans had taken over the Meadowlands and no one was surprised. Most of the Jets fans sadly headed for the exits, having seen this ending before.

Of course the Jets had a chance to beat the Patriots, and of course it ended with the ball getting swatted out of Ryan Fitzpatrick's hands. And of course Tom Brady, given enough time -- or any time at all -- engineered a game-winning drive. That's the way it goes for teams who have franchise quarterbacks on their roster. That's the way it goes, far too often against the Jets.

You have to feel sorry for Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan. After the special teams unit was a liability last year and probably contributed to at least a couple of losses, the team did everything they possibly could to upgrade the special teams units. They specifically targeted special teams standouts from other teams and retained those players over others that had upside or more chance of making offensive and defensive contributions. They even replaced the coach and upgraded at a few key positions, including using a draft pick on a punter.

Every contingency was covered apart from the one element of their special teams unit that the team had always been able to rely upon in the past; the kicking game. In fact, retaining Nick Folk was further evidence that special teams were viewed as a high priority because while he beat out Ross Martin on merit, a previous regime might have been prepared to risk some rookie growing pains to save some money.

Once regarded as the best in the world and now seeking to prove himself to the doubters, once proud fan favorite Darrelle Revis saw himself badly beaten and embarrassed by a younger and more talented opponent. However, that's enough about CM Punk. How did Revis get on this week?

The big story is that AJ Green put up monster numbers and the reward card for the Revis Island Resort has now been eliminated, so your Revis Island Reward Points may no longer be valid. Actually, though? Things perhaps aren't as bad as they might have seemed.

Green had 180 yards on 12 catches, including a 54-yard touchdown with Revis trailing him to the end zone. However, other than the touchdown, he only had one other first down on a reception with Revis covering him and that was on a ridiculous catch with Revis draped all over him.
