Kelenna Azubuike, who has been out all season recovering from knee surgery, could make his return to action soon.

Azubuike told the media he could have played in Wednesday's game against the Bucks.

Lost in all the Carmelo chatter was a note from Alan Hahn about Kelenna Azubuike, who seems close to returning after the All-Star break.
"I feel closer than I've ever been," Azubuike said as he walked off the court.

What's more important is Mike D'Antoni, this time, agrees.

"He's getting closer, that's for sure," D'Antoni said. "I didn't think he'd even get this close. We'll keep evaluating him and we'll see after the all-star break how he's doing and see if there's some opportunities to get him on the floor."

I haven't seen him practice in a few weeks, but when I did he seemed to be going very gingerly on the leg. If he can go, that would be like adding a piece at the deadline, although it doesn't fit the biggest team need of playoff experience, depth up front and backup point guard.

NY Post
D'Antoni was nonplussed at Kelenna Azubuike 's return to scrimmaging yesterday and Azubuike saying he feels different now because he can push better off his knee. "Good for him," D'Antoni said. "Watching practice and seeing if he can play, it's going to be a while. It's not going to be next week." Azubuike has a marketable expiring contract and the Knicks could cut him after the trade deadline Feb. 24 to open a roster spot.
Last I saw Azubuike, he was having a lot of trouble laterally, and was going through a pretty safe workout. It was then I didn't think that he'd back for a while. Sounds like it's still the case.

I agree very much with the high IQ scribe who works for Newsday.

With the lack of consistency from Toney Douglas, Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler, the Knicks need an automatic jump shooter. I also think they need someone to attack the rim at will, but a shooter is certainly a need as well.

And obviously, the Knicks could use some depth up front. Their front line is starting to look like the Giants offensive line.

And I guess you can throw Roger Mason in there too at this point, but I'm curious as to what fans think about an apparent battle for minutes between Bill Walker and rookie Landry Fields.

I obviously like Fields, and have great respect for Walker who reported to summer league in the best shape of his life. Both had their moments yesterday, but to me Fields outplayed him in training camp. Enough so to get minutes yesterday when he was on the outside looking in.

Walker had 8 points in 18 minutes and was 2-3 from downtown. But he was a -11.

Here it is everyone. Your first open thread for the first preseason game of the season. I would venture to guess that Turiaf gets the start along side Stoudemire and the starters will play significant minutes.

There are potential issues, but the bottom line for me is can the team create second opportunities and can they limit the other team to a lot of one and done situations, and I don't mean makes.

It seems Wilson Chandler, who has always been very gracious to us here at TKB, is expendable. The Knicks have been shopping him, despite denying it, and with Landry Fields in the mix now, the heat is turned up even hotter on Chandler, one of the resident elder statesmen in terms of years of service with the Knicks.

But what is his value?

But my source says Walsh has now found another doable deal that would net him a No. 1, though the source would not disclose whether Chandler would be the piece the Knicks would give up (a package of Toney Douglas and Bill Walker, for instance, might be more enticing to some teams).
To me, he's still one of the team's top two-way players. Frankly, I don't know where he fits most comfortably. He often floats offensively and takes out of rhythm shots. And from what I've seen thusfar, he hasn't blended well with Ray Felton. But in fairness, it's going to take some time for the new Knicks QB to get on the same page with all of his teammates.

Chandler acknowledged he misses some of his former mates. While Knicks fans rejoiced at the club cleaning house, Chandler had grown close to several players who have come and gone. In fact, Chandler has played with so many teammates in his three seasons, he's lost count.

Several people with knowledge of the situation informed TKB a few weeks ago that Kelenna Azubuike was excited and on schedule to be ready at some point during training camp.

The Knicks, however, aren't so sure.

?We?re not sure,? said the team president Donnie Walsh, who described a torn patellar tendon as ?one of the worst injuries in the league.?

Although he suffered a devastating knee injury last season, a source close to the situation told me a few weeks ago that Kelenna Azubuike "looks strong" and will be "ready to compete for the starting two spot." Sounds like he'll be ready at some point during training camp.

The Knicks sound as if they are staying patient on the Rudy Fernandez front as the Blazers asking price is very high at this point. As we told you, Rudy wants to be in NY and would seemingly be a solid fit at the two spot, but the Knicks have players on the roster who can handle the role, including Azubuike.

There's too much to talk about but I'll try my best.

Isiah Thomas is not returning to the Knicks as president and/or general manager, he is being considered. That's a polite way of saying he wasn't responsible for ruining the franchise now that it's stable. Isiah, I've heard, is a charming man and does have positive skills in his ledger. He is a friend of Jim Dolan and has the respect of Donnie Walsh.

But his return to the Knicks in an executive or decision-making role would be an unbearably horrific management decision.
