Back when I was in high school, C- was still a passing grade. But when you're being judged on an offseason worth of free-agent signings, trades and the NBA Draft, it's not as flattering.

Sports Illustrated handed the New York Knicks a C- grade for the offseason, one in which the team acquired Andrea Bargnani, Metta World Peace, Beno Udrih, Jeremy Tyler, Tim Hardaway Jr. and C.J. Leslie, and also re-upped with J.R. Smith, Pablo Prigioni and Kenyon Martin.

According to Rob Mahoney, the Knicks retained some necessary pieces and enjoyed some bargain signings, but re-signing Smith comes with its question marks, while trading for Bargnani did not address the team's needs.

With all of the offseason additions, New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson is still unsure of which players he'll trot out as his starting five.

According to Woodson, only Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton are sure bets to crack the starting lineup, leaving the shooting guard and power forward positions open for competition.

At the 2, J.R. Smith will play starter minutes, but the reigning Sixth Man of the Year will probably continue to provide an offensive spark off the bench like he did in 2012.

An annual summer series, ESPN released its summer forecast yesterday, projecting where each team would finish in the 2013-14 season.

The top five in the East, according to ESPN, goes as follows: the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks.

It's the same teams that finished in top five a season ago, except teams 2-5 are scrambled up. In 2012, the Knicks finished second in the Eastern Conference, followed by the Pacers, Nets and Chicago.

According to the source, Anthony wants Martin in New York, though he is not permitted to sign a contract until March, when his Chinese team is through with the playoffs. The rugged forward was bought out earlier this week and was expected home for the holidays.

The source said Martin considers the Knicks his top choice, partly because of his friendship with Anthony. They became tight during their nearly seven seasons together in Denver. Martin could fill the role of another gritty big man off the bench with athleticism.Andrew Smith talked about this right after the trade went down and again over the summer before Martin went to China. Hard not to love Martin's toughness. The guy is a pro and playoff tested. Sign me up.

I've heard Martin's name mentioned as he is close with Melo and would be a huge help up front. I'd love his toughness here.
