8:14PM: Alain Vigneault spoke with the media prior to tonight's game against the Ducks and said (NYR):

  • "On D, Kleiner is going to go in for Dan. I didn't want two injured guys in at the same time and Dan got a start yesterday, obviously not an easy situation, especially that type of injury where you don't skate much and don't do a lot of off-ice conditioning. Felt we would get him in last night, get Kleiner in tonight and we will go from there, obviously Hank is in tonight."
  • On the D pairs, "exact same two and Kleiner just goes in for Dan."

7:06PM: Kevin Klein will replace Dan Girardi in the Rangers lineup tonight and skate with Ryan McDonagh. (NYR)

The Rangers will go with the same group of forwards as last night.

  • "The only game-time decision that we have is Kleiner. He isn't feeling well right now, he is here, Adam is coming in and we will probably decide here in the next 45 minutes."

  • On being in Brooklyn, "we haven't won in this building yet. We need to play a good game tonight, they are coming off a loss to Toronto, they were playing some real solid hockey before that. We are going to have to play a real solid game here and manage the puck real well and that is what we will try and do tonight here."
  • On the forward combos, "Any coach will tell you that you would like to be consistent and keep the same lines. It depends on how certain guys are performing and if other players on a certain night have more jump or better decision making, you make some in-game decisions but every coach will tell you that if you can be consistent he would like to do that."

The New York Rangers face the Columbus Blue Jackets on the road Monday at Nationwide Arena at 7:30 p.m. ET.

According to STATS:

  • The Rangers beat the Avalanche, 4-2, at home on Saturday night, winning their season-high tying fifth straight tilt with the triumph. Including each of its last four victories, New York has tallied four or more goals 28 times in 2016-17 -- most of any team in hockey.
  • Columbus defeated Detroit, 2-1, at Nationwide Arena on Saturday night, snapping its two-game home losing streak in the process. With their victory over the Wings, the Blue Jackets now have 35 wins on the season -- one more than they had all of 2015-16.
  • The Jackets have taken two of three from the Blueshirts this season, scoring four or more times in each contest. With a victory tonight, Columbus will have more single-season wins over New York than in any other campaign all-time.

After the game, Alain Vigneault said that Klein is one of the Rangers who has to play with "bite and grit" and that his game has picked up as he has done it with more consistency.

The Rangers have succeeded lately with their captain on the sidelines for most of their recent games, and they'll try to keep heading in the right direction against the slumping New Jersey Devils.

McDonagh sat out for the fifth time in seven games Sunday, but the Rangers improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine with a 1-0 overtime victory against Detroit.

5:25PM: Klein's full comments today were (MSG):

  • "I am definitely ready to play. I feel that I could have played yesterday but they felt that maybe I should get in some battle drills to make sure that I am ready and I feel good."
  • How did you recover so quickly, "fortunate, I guess. I was having issues with it before and that kind of compounded it but it hasn't felt any worse than before so that is a positive thing."
  • Does it impact anything, "no, I can shoot it which is the main thing, that and battling I thought would put the most pressure on it. I played with it a couple of weeks before that, so yea, excited to be back and with the boys."
  • On how he felt going into the boards, " It was already painful before that, it was really painful and one of the more painful injuries I have ever had. It stings for 5-10 minutes and then it settles down and then we saw the doctor and I am happy it doesn't require surgery."
  • You didn't play in a splint before that, "no. The thing I am wearing now is not too big and won't impact me. Just to keep the thumb from going a different way."
  • Can it get worse, "can't get any worse, chance it can heal on it's own. That is why we are going with the splint on there and go from there."
  • "I kind of woke up and it felt the same as it did in previous days and thought that it wasn't so bad. I went to see the doctor, the hand specialist and he was good and gave me all the info and we talked it through. Then I found out that I was out indefinitely and started laughing and the doc was laughing too because he said that I could possibly play, it was just a pain tolerance thing. Miscommunication."
  • You will be playing through pain, "it's not too bad. Just go out there and battle, we are all used to it."

  • On Klein, "what we said yesterday was what we thought. We didn't know how long it would be. He obviously responded very well to meeting the docs and the splint. He is not obviously playing tonight here but he responded well to the doctors news. The splint feels a little bit better and he was able to handle the puck."
  • It's definitely fractured?, "yes."
  • Does that revise the timetable, "well I said indefinite yesterday and indefinite could mean a day or two or a long time. He will go see Dr. Miyagi this afternoon and get a little bit of this (rubs hands together/laughs) and who knows? He might play tonight (laugh), no he isn't playing tonight."
  • "Clearly a lot better than what everyone anticipated when he went to the doctors yesterday."

Alain Vigneault was asked before the game about what will happen with Brady Skjei if Kevin Klein is able to return to the lineup soon. (NYR)

Vigneault said, "I haven't discussed that with Jeff. We only have six healthy D, Kleiner obviously isn't playing tonight. I would say that after having talked with Rammer briefly here after I got in tonight, I would say he is doubtful for tomorrow. I think Step has a better chance, though at this time we just have six healthy D so Skjei is definitely going to be here." (NYR)

On Skjei and the turnover he had on Tuesday, Vigneault said "he is a high end skill defenseman that played sometime last year in the AHL. Very impressed with his progression so far in the AHL. That wasn't his first turnover and I don't think its' going to be his last. All players have gone through this before in the past. They know to have a short memory and show mental strength to move forward. He was fine after that, no lingering effects and he kept playing and played well." (NYR)
